Another classic shot to shit:
Rob Zombie is Remaking The Blob
Source:Variety
August 28, 2009
Rob Zombie, whose Halloween II opens today, will write, direct and produce a remake of the 1958 horror classic The Blob, which starred Steve McQueen.
In the original, an object from space crashes into a field, containing a red blob-like substance that absorbs the humans it contacts and grows exponentially.
"My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing -- that's the first thing I want to change," Zombie told the trade. "That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now."
Zombie will produce with Genre Co.'s Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten; original "Blob" producer Jack H. Harris; and Judith Parker Harris of Worldwide Entertainment Corp. and Andy Gould.
They are developing the project as an R-rated film that will cost around $30 million to make.

Then why in God's name is he remaking THE FUCKING BLOB?
I was kind of intrigued by the idea of Zombie taking on this kind of material until I read that quote. What the hell is he thinking?

No kidding.
"Big red blobbly thing"? What a moron. Good heavens.
He claims to be such a horror fan, but after he thought he improved Halloween by completely demystifying it, and now this, I feel he has no idea what he's doing. I thought HO1000C was pretty fun, and I really enjoyed Devil's Rejects, but he needs to leave established horror the hell alone.
I'll just keep my fingers crossed that this falls through.

He must be on something, as The Blob can't get any scarier since the 1980's remake came out. That one really scared the hell outta me and put me off food for days.

Yeah that puzzles me too...
Before he did any of the remakes - i thought he might do an interesting version of Mothers Day. The Blob is a weird fucking choice - its a great film - i need to watch the remake again soon too.

i have no problem with zombie remaking this film.
far more interested to see what he could do with this than i was with halloween.
I think monster movies from the 50's are ideal remake material..
it sure didnt hurt The Thing.

I think I'm with you and everyone else at the same time. I have no problem with a remake because unless he tapes over the original copy, he's not exactly destroying the old one, or the first remake. Let him waste money and time on yet another film that will no doubt get panned.
Although I do think he's an idiot for remaking The Blob without The Blob.

He talks about his original ideas all the time but I think the studios are afraid to finance his projects. I think remakes are not only his way of being able to give his take on some of his favorites but also a way to gather funding to do some of his own stuff. Could be wrong. Still waiting for Superbeasto...

I think he means he doesn't want to a red space-blob. Maybe some time of infection that makes the person mutate into a darker-colored blob with a taste for flesh perhaps. I don't know. I'm still not sure if this is official since I haven't seen the actual interview from which the quote was taken.

Let me put that into perspective:
"My intention is not to have a man in a rubber suit -- that's the first thing I want to change," Carpenter told the trade. "That guy in a rubber mask-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now."
I think a couple people have found that "The Thing" was a pretty good movie. Actually many people have said, and I whole-heartedly agree, that The Thing is one of the best horror sci-fi movies ever made right along with Alien.
Can Zombie actually pull off such a feat with The Blob? Maybe. But writing it off just because he's taking something old, updating it, and making it his own at the same time is just plain stupid and very ignorant of what has been done in the past.

I understand where you're coming from. But no one's upset that Zombie is "taking something old, updating it, and making it his own at the same time," which is just another way to say "remake", because remakes in and of themselves don't have to be a bad thing. That's obvious, since we've seen examples of this many times before. What's upsetting is his attitude toward the source material. Carpenter updating special effects for modern audiences is one thing, but Zombie wanting to completely remove the titular creature shows a gross lack of confidence in himself and in the original film, which makes me wonder, "Why remake it at all, then?"
Again, it's not the idea itself that is aggravating, but his attitude towards it. I was intrigued until I read that quote. If he misspoke, or if we're just misunderstanding him, then perhaps he'll prove us wrong if the film gets made. But after what he did to Halloween, I'm not holding out much hope.

Every topic about a remake turns into a "remakes are evil!" discussion. So before it starts, can we please stop the talk about remakes in general and just talk about Zombie's movies and the other Blob movies. Please?
From an interview with Dee Snider and Fangoria.
TIMPONE: There’s a big Internet story going around that you’re directing a remake of THE BLOB. Any truth to that?
ZOMBIE: Yeah, that’s true. Someone came to me, and it was a budget way beyond anything I’ve ever worked with, and said, “You can do anything you want,” which of course are always the magic words to me. Because I’m gonna do it anyway, so they might as well just prepare themselves. What I love about it is that it’s cool, it’s a science fiction movie, it’s something different.
TIMPONE: How will it be different than the first two BLOBs?
ZOMBIE: Whatever they did, I want to do the exact opposite. I’m not really a fan of either of those movies.
TIMPONE: The ’80s remake, too?
ZOMBIE: I don’t even remember it. I remember that Kevin Dillon was in it, that’s all.

He's referring to the folks that get angry over the fact that a movie they like is being remade. Not the people who avoid remakes, the folks who say "Rob Zombie is a fucking hack, he bent Michael Myers and Halloween over a table and fucked him beyond recognition! He deserves to be shot in the fucking face!"

To be honest Im not that wild about most of the remade movies Ive seen. This isnt because their being remade, its because they suck.
I just find it kinda stupid to get bent outta shape over it the way some folks do. It seems like some people think that once somethings remade, the orginal isnt going to work anymore.
I gotta admit, I was worried to. After I got home from watching the Halloween remake I put the orginal in the DVD player and what'da know. There it was, the 78 version.
Think about this way.
I supposed I could bitch and complain about Cherry Coke because I dont like it as much as regular Coke. I could find a soda forum and piss and moan about how they fucked up Coke and how Coke would never be the same and how unoriginal the inventors of cherry coke were.
OR, I could just buy a fucking regular Coke and not drink the cherry version.

It's funny, every time I've mentioned this to somebody this week I get a similar response, and not the one you would expect. Everybody tells me that they don't think the Blob is scary and they wouldn't go see a remake because a big blob just doesn't interest them. Then I tell them about Zombie's quote and they're a little more interested. Maybe he's onto something...

Remakes dismay me. I really did enjoy the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" because it used all of the modern special effects techniques to make the gore gorier:) and having the zombies running at full speed was a stroke of genius.
That little detail is what will bring the genre to another level, if anyone can manage to make something creepy, spooky and compelling.
But a blob movie without the blob is no blob at all. I'm not a Rob Zombie fan either so I guess it doesn't help. But Hollywood is reactionary for the most part. I mean really, how stupid was it to remake "R.E.C." in english when the original spanish version was excellent? A true horror classic.
The woman who played the reporter in "Quarantine" should of been quarantined for being a bad actress. She was suuuuuuuuuuuch a twat, I couldn't stand her.

On the opening night of Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights, reporters caught up with Rob Zombie from the red carpet of the Chiller Eyegore Awards where he talked briefly about The Blob remake.
“I’m about halfway [done],” he tells, adding that he really doesn’t know what the Blob will look like just yet. “I’m still working on it, so I cant really say… I was thinking, you know, it wasn’t going to be a big red globby thing. I don’t know what it IS going to be, it’s more like I know what I DON’T want it to be.”
So Zombie's Blob will definitely be...different.

Like all remakes, Rob Zombie is doing it because he is getting paid more than if he were to make his own original movies. But I do understand wanting to change the concept of the blob, I mean if Jello came at me, I would just walk away. No fear, nothing. So maybe it will be darkened and stealthier. That's usually how they do it. I'm intrigued.
