for interest of uk members particular;

at the end of the nasties furore in the 1980s UK came the VRA (video recording act) which made it illegal to distribute videos (and eventually dvd's and games) which had not been granted a certificate by the relevant ratings board (nominally the bbfc). it also made it illegal to distribute material with a certificate to under-age people.

this is the law that was used to ban the game manhunt 2 and meant that uncut versions of the last house on the left and the texas chainsaw massacre were banned for over decades.

grotesque (aka the japanese hostel) has this month been refused a certificate - so the distribution of the film is prohibited under the vra.

so why mention this now, well it has now come to light that the vra itself is no longer enforceable due to a "clerical" error 25 years ago.

the current prosecutions under this have been dropped and it will apparently take 3 months to sort out a new law.

so the politicians have started about how this has "thrown film censorship into chaos". no doubt they think moral chaos will break out meaning the end of civilization.

i doubt it.

AHHHH! THE BBFC HAS FALLEN THROUGH! TRAILERS NOT CERTIFIED FOR THIS AUDIENCE WILL BE SHOWN IN "U" FILMS! SNUFF FILMS WILL BE FLYING OFF THE SHELVES AT TESCO! GORDON BROWN, THE MOST BORING MAN ON EARTH WILL BECOME PRIMIN- Oh wait...

This is pretty cool that it's all screwed up. Take your fill while you can. Although come on. I'm not exactly going to be allowed to go out and buy an 18 film because although it may not be law that they can't sell it to me, the shops reserve the right to refuse service on such things. Meh. No matter. I'll get what I want on eBay.

bbfc is fine, just the law to back up their decisions is void.

will the shops start selling to under-age? no, they will voluntarily follow the "law" as you could consider the media outrage if they didn't.

so what might happen,
market stalls appearing selling dvd's
could grotesque appear on dvd
uncut version of manhunt 2

The poor distributor to Nightmares in a damaged brain got 6months over distributing an already cut version of the film...

Both the Witch hunts in the 80's and 90's were a sham..

They were dangerous times my friend - I wonder who that Dubliner was:
