In an interview with SlashFilm about his latest release Ninja Assassin, director James McTiegue revealed details on his next project, The Raven.
The film tells the fictional story of author Edger Allen Poe's encounter with a killer whose murders are patterned after Poe's own stories.
The film is currently casting.
"It's like the poem, 'The Raven,'" said McTiegue, "crossed with Se7en. It should be pretty cool. The script is really good and everyone responds to it really well. I'm in the middle of casting."
Brad Ander, director of The Machinist and Session 9, was previously attached to direct.

With Ninja Assassin arriving in theaters soon, director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) has been out doing the press rounds talking about his ultra bloody revenge flick. During a recent interview with Sci Fi Wire, he chatted a little about his forthcoming Edgar Allan Poe film, The Raven, which lead to a shocking discovery --- it could head into torture porn territory.
While McTeigue never says it will be a torture film, Sci Fi Wire puts the words in his mouth.
"Edgar Allan Poe might have been the original "torture porn" author, writing stories about diabolical ways in which characters can die. An upcoming film called The Raven posits a story about what would happen if Poe were faced with the very murders he wrote about. In the movie, at the end of Poe's life, a serial killer challenges him to solve a series of killings inspired by Poe's fiction," writes the site.
"It's sort of Se7en meets a series of Poe stories," he tells Sci Fi Wire. "It's set in 1850s Baltimore, and it's about creating Poe's version of 1850s Baltimore, him moving through it. So it has a lot of the Poe stories interwoven into it."
Films that will be referenced include, "'The Raven,' 'Tell-Tale Heart,' 'Premature Burial,' 'Murders in the Rue Morgue,'" adding, "There's a whole lot of them. It's actually a pretty cool concept."
Being penned by Hannah Shakespeare and Ben Livingston, there is still no start date yet.

Could be interesting... Now who would make a good Poe?

If Harvey Keitel could get the accent right, he'd be kind of a cool candidate.

I always got the impression that Poe was of slight build though - I could be wrong in this..
