Hi,

I love movie sound, it's a kind of weird obsession.

Many horror movies have weird music, but I'm not looking for weird music.
"The Shining" would be an example of something with good weird music.

Instead, I'm looking for horror films with really unique ambiences, background frequencies, unique monster noises, screams, spooky sounds, etc.

What movies creeped you out just on sound alone, not even the music?

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Forbidden Planet. My god, that track is OUT THERE. I have no idea how Warner let them get away with it, but I'm damn glad they did. It isn't music, but echoes, zips, boings, wet slaps, etc. It's far out.

Eraserhead- again, "music" is far and in-between, and when there is actually a discernable tune it's often diegetic. The rest is just shit Lynch threw together in a sound studio over a long period of time. The best example is the scene with the suckling dogs.

Also, of course, any Argento/Goblin collaboration, most notably Suspiria, Deep Red and Tenebre.

Clean, Shaven - This movie has a soundscape like no other. The director uses white noise and all kinds of other craziness to portray the mind of a young man with severe mental disabilties. Great movie, and a self-proclaimed movie sound junkie like you needs to see it ASAP. Not horror per se, but I'm sure you'll love it.

Phantasm...great natural and unnatural sound effects. Creates a lot of weird atmospheres through sound cues.
