Ryuhei Kitamura has been hired to direct the film adaptation of Top Cow's comic character Magdalena, with Holly Brix set to pen the feature.

Kitamura is the Japanese director behind the popular action/horror film Versus as well as the recent Lionsgate effort Midnight Meat Train.

Brix, on the other hand, is best known for writing The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations, so let's put her under the "unknown quantity" column for now.

Gale Anne Hurd -- the producer behind such genre pictures as The Incredible Hulk, Punisher: War Zone, The Terminator, and Aliens -- and her Valhalla Motion Pictures are teaming with Platinum Studios on the project.

"Both Kitamura and Brix bring very unique visions to Magdalena," says Hurd. "Kitamura's visual style coupled with Brix's imaginative narrative will truly make Magdalena a compelling film on screen."

There have been several versions of the Magdalena character depicted in Top Cow's books (the character, who does not have an ongoing series, has shown up in a variety of the label's comics).
The Magdalenas are descended from Christ and function as powerful protectors of the Catholic Church.

Luke Goss, the British actor who played baddie Prince Nuada in Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Jenna Dewan (Step Up, The Grudge 2) were announced at last year's San Diego Comic-Con as having been cast in the film, though their names are nowhere to be found in the press release announcing Kitamura and Brix today, so it's not clear what their status is at this point in regards to the project.
