Although George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead won't be released until next year, producers Artfire Films and Romero-Grunwald Prods. have already greenlit a sequel.
Diary received generally positive reviews after its premiere in Toronto, and the sequel will take place immediately after the end of the first film, according to Screen International.
The script, to be written and directed by Romero, will see survivors from the first film escape to a remote island, only to be plunged into another battle with the undead.
It will be Romero's sixth zombie flick, following Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead and the aforementioned Diary. And while there's no word yet on a title, we wouldn't be surprised if the godfather of gore plumps for "Island of the Dead".
Whatever the case, Romero's latest horror opus is set to shoot in Spring 2008.

I think Romero should venture out now and do something different this time around.

Yeah, I don't know about this. I thought "Land" was pretty bad. Also, "The script, to be written and directed by Romero, will see survivors from the first film escape to a remote island, only to be plunged into another battle with the undead." sounds more like a sequel to the "Dawn" remake.

Yeah, Romero is becoming less and less credible. He needs to quit while he's ahead; I don't like the direction his films are taking.

Well, I don't think this one will be a blockbuster, but you have to take into account that its Romero, he doesn't really need to make a good movie for horror fans to watch it. Shit i bet he could film something in his back yard with his friends and family and people would want to watch it.

Agree with you on both points. My thoughts exactly about sounding like a Dawn remake sequel. To me it didn't look like anybody made it. You know these film makers the opening shot of the new movie will be of someone up a tree throwing coconuts at the zombies lol:D

So...what's this a sequel to anyway? the dawn remake?
Just going with the island connection and all...unless diary of the dead was something I'd missed?

im happy with anything he does... just unsure bout day remake but looking forward to diary, tho i think it sounds too much like 'my name is bruce' or 'wrong turn 2' or 'leslie vernon' but it still sounds good.

He just made it; it hasn't even had a wide release yet.

I liked Land of the Dead, one of the best zombie movies out there (even if it isn't as good as the previous three) and I'll be happy if Romero continues to make zombie movies for the rest of his career. He does have to take the time out of his schedule to stop by the set of the Crazies remake and help them make sure it doesn't suck though.
diary should get a wider release soon - probably early next year. advance word i heard from friends who went to the toronto festival said it was awesome - pure old school romero

Dread Central reports that George A. Romero is set to direct Diary of the Dead 2 this September.
The website "learned that George has to attend several meetings about DIARY 2 which have the project significantly hitting the fast track. So significantly that we got the word it's 99.9% a go for the film to start production this September..."
Our heroes, trapped in the mansion where we left them, battle waves of ravenous zombies, barely escaping alive. In search of a safe place to settle, they commandeer an abandoned ferry and sail to a deserted island, only to find that it is already populated by a civilization of the dead. The next episode of the saga is a violent siege set in the middle of nowhere, a desperate struggle for survival, and peace, between two tribes: the living and the living dead.

Cool.
After Land of the Dead (which I didn't love...) seeing Diary, I was pretty apprehensive, but, quite liked it in the end - enough to say I'd like to see more.

I think he should do a different twist on the zombie genre again.
this just doesnt fit. Night, Dawn, Day, Land, Diary...and Diary 2?
doesnt fit. rename it maybe?
good to see he's still going at it though.

Cast Revealed for Romero's New Zombie Film
Source: Variety
October 3, 2008
Alan Van Sprang, Kenneth Welsh (The Fog remake), Kathleen Munroe (Durham County), Devon Bostick (Saw IV), Richard Fitzpatrick (Breach), Stefano Colacitti and Athena Karkanis (Saw IV) are starring in George Romero's untitled zombie film. Spring and Bostick each played roles in Romero's Land of the Dead, the former returned as another character in Diary of the Dead.
Romero began principal photography on the latest chapter in his undead saga this week.
According to Variety, the plot involves inhabitants of an isolated island (confirming what ShockTillYouDrop.com reported here) off the North American coast who find their relatives rising from the dead to eat their kin. The leaders of the island feud over whether or not to kill their reanimated relatives or preserve them in hopes of finding a cure.

I'm going to put a large bet on this film being called Island Of The Dead.

George A. Romero's latest zombie effort has had the title "...of the dead" for some time now, where many fans speculated it would eventually be called Island of the Dead, being that it's appropriately set on a small island town. Luckily the film didn't receive that name, and according to this year Toronto International Film Festival listing, it's now titled Survival of the Dead.
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/9092/sodb.jpg
The story follows on a small island off North America's coast, the dead rise to menace the living. Yet, the islanders can't bring themselves to exterminate their loved ones despite the growing danger from those they once held dear. A rebel among them hunts down all the zombies he can find only to be banished from the island for assassinating his neighbors and friends.
On the mainland, bent on revenge, he encounters a small band of survivors in in search of an oasis on which to build a new life. Barely surviving an attack from a mass of ravenous flesh-eaters they commandeer a zombie-infested ferry and sail to the island. There, to their horror, they discover the locals have chained the dead inside their homes, pretending to live "normal" lives...with bloody consequences.

What ensues is a desperate struggle for survival and the answer to a question never posed in Romero's Dead films: Can the living ever live in peace with the dead?
In addition, a stack of new images have been posted on the TIFF website as the film will have its World Premiere at the "Midnight Madness" section come September.
"We're in the final stages of post-production and it's great to come up for air and find out the film's been chosen to appear at the Festival. It's just a terrific honor."...says Romero.

I was disappointed with this one to be honest. I dug how the majority of the characters were thieves and villains but I found this entry a little flat. Will be giving it another watch sometime to see if it grows on me.

Flat is being a bit polite...I didn't expect much after LOTD (but i guess Diary gave me some false hope) but i thought it was pretty shit...Zombies on Horrors and some of the CGI was just terrible.

I havent seen it yet but Ive seen diary of the dead and land of the dead and i gotta disagree with you there ferox, i found all george a romero movies BUT diary good, i dont know why i watch films with that weird camera angle when i know it drives me apeshit, i cant stand the shakiness, i never like the people holding the camera, and its impossible to get a really good view of much of the cool shit, i mean i bet cloverfield would have been 100 times better if they had normal camera angles. All the george a romero movies with normal ones are awsome too, you get to see in long detail the kill scenes, if diary of the dead is anything like cloverfield i bet you barely get to SEE the zombies, i mean i understand its kinda to make you feel there or something, but it just makes me feel annoyed i cant see as much as i would in a normal movie format. It may be to make you care more for the actors, but the characters are the ones shaking the camera like a dumb ass, it makes me want them ALL to die and its not even as good because if you see it you barely do through the annoying shakiness. Im sorry ferox but i gotta disagree, land of the dead RULED and even though i havent even seen diary ive seen all the classics and i say movies should never be in that cloverfield-style and movies with that camera angle dont make you feel there more or care for the characters, it simply annoys those who love the normal ways of filming movies, you never see as much as you want and what you do see is fucked up by the shaking camera as the characters run or shake in fear. P.S i mean to see survival of the dead but never diary, cloverfield ruined that camera style for me. George a romero is the best, any who have read my john carpenter thread, they are both tied as my favorite film makers.

Diary Of The Dead was awesome IMO (apart from a couple of annoying characters and the heavy handedness of the themes). I liked it way more than Cloverfield which I saw round the same time along with [REC]. Diary is a different film to those two so don't let the camera style put you off because its classic Romero.

Watched Survival a couple of weeks ago and i`m sorry to say that George should do the decent thing and retire.
Land,Diary and Survival are not in anyway in the same class as the first trilogy.
The whole feel of his later movies is nothing like the Night,Dawn and Day flics.
And why the hell is he using cgi.The old ways of fx with Savini where miles in front of any computer rubbish he now dishes out.
George,i love you but please............retire and grow old gracefully and not become a laughing stock.

George, in a interview i have recently read, considers this a different set of movies from Night - Land.
The CGI comes from pure financial reasons. He was given creative control over Diary and Survival and in that was forced to make the movies for a considerably smaller budget. While the rubber/latex effects are yes SOOO much better, they simply arent economical. It can take quite a while to set up these "Real" gags, leaving many people to stand around and do nothing while a team of special FX guys work with the effect. Thusly having someone sit in front of a computer for a couple hours and CG in an effect cost much less than what the cost of having most of the crew standing around all day for onbe shot.
