Barnes and Noble is having a 50% off sale on Criterion Collection titles. If you're like me and can't often purchase DVDs for $35 a pop, you'll rejoyce when you see this. Most titles are running for $19.99, and there are a few gems (Bunuel's Simon of the Desert to mention one) that are going for around $13. If there was ever a time to purchase your favorite Criterion titles, this is it.

Sounds like I plan to me...I was actually thinking about asking for suggestions. Which would be a good starting point for his work?
The only one I'll be picking up for sure is Eyes Without a Face, been dying to see that one for way too long. Otherwise...I'm open for suggestions. Probably end up getting 2-3.

I highly, highly, HIGHLY reccomend you pick up Viridiana. It's only $15, it's a great starting point for the director. It's creepy, funny, grotesque, absurd, surreal, blasphemous...your money would be well spent, and you'd be on your way to discovering the work of one of the cinema's all-time geniuses!

Okay, I finally went through the whole list (not just the bestsellers) and here's my list:
Definitely getting to replace VHS copies:
Black Narcissus
Chungking Express
Eyes Without a Face (I actually don't have this on VHS, but this is a must buy)
Ones I would like to get, but it's a long list:
The Last Emperor
The Virgin Spring
The Third Man
Time Bandits
Grand Illusion
8 1/2
M
The Red Shoes
Viridiana
Any suggestions on the "like to get" list? I have yet to see (but I know they're good) Virgin Spring, M, and only parts of the Red Shoes. Also, it's been a long time since I've seen Grand Illusion and 8 1/2, though I remember I liked them (though not why).

Nope.
On my way home from work today I stopped in my local store and got the very new release of Last Year at Marienbad for a baffling $20. They weren't even offering this one for half-off online because its such a recent release. I'm pretty sure I squealed out loud the moment I saw it.

Eyes Without a Face

The Last Emperor
Time Bandits
Those last two peaked the interest of my husband, so I gotta get those since he rarely lets me expand his cinematic horizons. :p

When I go back to school, the university library almsot literally has everything- including every single Criterion release. I'll probably check it out then unless I stumble across it in a B&N in the right mood.

Hm, let's see. Some of my favorites, other than Brakhage:
- Kenneth Anger
- Maya Deren
- Jan Švankmajer
- The Brothers Quay have done some interesting work certainly worth checking out
The early Dada guys had some great stuff: (obviously) Buñuel/Dalí's Un chien andalou, Jean Epstein's The Fall of the House of Usher (1928), Man Ray's L'Étoile de mer (1928), Marcel Duchamp's Anémic cinéma (1926), etc.
One of the more impressive short films I have ever seen is a 1926 piece by Dimitri Kirsanoff called Ménilmontant.
There is a wonderful DVD set that Kino released called Avant-Garde: Experimental Cinema of the 1920s and 30s that I would seriously recommend if you're interested in getting into more experimental work. Quite a few of the ones I've mentioned are included, actually (Ménilmontantis on there).
If you haven't seen The Man with the Movie Camera (1929) by Dziga Vertov, that's definitely worth a watch, too.

Very tempted to grab Dreyer's Passion of Joan of Arc - mostly because I'm such a huge fan of Antonin Artaud, and would love to see his performance here. (On a related note, I would love to see these guys put out a worthwhile edition of Abel Gance's Napoléon...even the heavily edited Coppola version is damn hard to come by these days, and you can forget about finding the original.)

It's one of my all-time favorites. Completely spellbinding. I give it a 100% recommendation.
And while it's cool to see Artaud at work, all the performances (while good) are rendered invisible next to Falconetti as Joan. To quote Dreyer himself on the subject:
"In Falconetti, who plays Joan, I found what I might, with very bold expression, allow myself to call 'the martyr’s reincarnation'."
Also, it has some of the most stunning cinematography I've ever seen; the composition is completely revelatory (which sounds melodramatic, I know, but seriously...wait until you watch it).

Agreed!! I have Joan of Arc on VHS and it is spellbinding! You forget you are watching a silent film. Falconetti's performance is some of the best acting in history. Unfortunately, it was the last film she acted in and it was lost for 50 years until it was found in a janitor's closet.

Alright, made a final online purchase to get two films I couldn't find in stores.
Fellini's 8 1/2
And, to right a wrong and fill a gap, and to keep a promise to my pal Fortunato,
Eyes Without a Face
Very excited to recieve this package.
Holy smokes!
Great purchases. Can't wait to hear what you think of either one.

Amazon has a lot for $19.95 too. I just bought 7 blu-ray titles all for that price!

Yeah I saw that- good price. It's only on blu, though, and I'm still far too poor for that upgrade.

Ok - so I waited to the last second, but I finally placed my order. Funds are shorter than I'd thought, so I only went for 2 Criterions:
- Eyes Without a Face
- Virdiana
Rounded out the order with Bertolucci'a 1900 (Novecento)...they had it on for $4, couldn't resist.
Very much looking forward to this package :)

Nice hauls, all three of you.
Its a real shame we dont have such offers and sales around these parts (heck I am lucky to even get some Criterion stuff!), and it sounds like a blast. Barnes & Noble seriously need to think about setting shop somewhere in India. Even if it was a 1000 miles away I d be frequenting it once a week.
Anyway, happy watching. Waiting to read all your opinions.

I'm almost all the way through the Red Shoes (very impressed thus far), so I will have a review in the next day or so and then onto Viridiana! :)

A very enthusiastic bump.
Man, I thought I'd never see this sale again, let alone only months after the last one:

Most likely to compete against Walmart, Target and Amazon for the holiday shopping dash. You guys are so lucky!

***BUMP***
Criterion makes the best DVDs and Blu-rays. Their transfers are impeccable and their special features are fascinating. When you pay the $35-$40 for a Criterion Collection movie, you’re paying a premium but you’re getting your money’s worth.
But wouldn’t it be great if you could just pay half of that?
Barnes & Noble is having a special sale where ALL Criterion Collection movies that are currently in print are 50% off their list price!!! (which is what they normally sell for)
You probably won’t find another sale like this for probably at least a year so if you’ve been waiting to buy a particular Criterion DVD or Blu-ray, now’s the time!!

I swear Barnes and Noble has this sale to celebrate when I'm too broke to buy DVDs even at half price. It never fails.
