Hey folks Harry here with perfect casting - Now - if we could get Javier Bardem as the Queen of Hearts. That's probably just me. But it'd freak the world out and he'd be astonishing as the Queen of Hearts.
dAnielitro here...
Today I read this on MSN NEWS Latin America.... http://noticias.ar.msn.com/articulo.aspx?cp-documentid=8944484
I'll translate the first paragraph:
Actor Johnny Depp was chosen to play "Mad Hatter" in Tim Burton's version of "Alice in Wonderland". Burton was hired by Disney studios to make the 3D version if Lewis Carrol's classic. Depp is the second confirmed cast member. Australian Mia Wasikowska will play Alice.
Thanks for this awesome site!

"Imaginarium" and "Public Enemies" sound like they'll shape up to be nice, and he's still rumored for "Sin City 2" and 3. And he's making "The Rum Diary" but I haven't read the book, so I can't say whether that will be good or not. So he's still got some adult films coming out.

Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter... honestly, and everyone's gonna hate me for this, it seems a little done. Actually, everything about Tim Burton directing Alice in Wonderland feels a little too perfect, in a way.
Like, it's too obvious - of course Tim Burton would direct Alice in Wonderland, I'm surprised no one's suggested it before. But it's getting to the point where Burton (whom I adore, don't get me wrong) has a monopoly on every weird, creepy, sorta dark fantasy/horror movie, and it's gonna start getting predictable. And the last thing we want is for Alice in Wonderland to be predictable.
Like, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a good movie. It was creative and well-directed. But nothing surprised me about it - every aspect that made that movie creative and creepy was something we'd expect Tim Burton to do. Same thing with Sweeney Todd - the insane violence was less effective, at least for me, because I expected it.
So even though I'd definitely watch Burton do Alice in Wonderland, I feel like I already know, basically, how it's gonna look, and that it's gonna be creepy and weird in the usual Tim Burton-esque way. Which, unfortunately, may make it forgettable to most people, especially when compared to Burton's best movies, like Edward Scissorhands.
personally, I'd rather see a newer directorial talent take on an Alice in Wonderland film made for adults. Guillermo del Toro would be ideal (he's doing the Hobbit), or Alfonso Cuaron or Timur Bekhaptyev (spelled that wrong - he directed Wanted). Or someone totally unexpected, because sometimes the least obvious directors are the best for a particular movie. Like who would have expected 'that Aussie dude who made those zombie films' to make Lord of the Rings. Or 'the dude who made Memento, I think' to be the best thing to happen to the Batman franchise in years.

Burton's Alice in Wonderland seems too predictable. Considering the biting satire, the punning , the dream language and the harshness of it all, I'd say Jodorowsky would be the only director who could do Alice justice. Possibly Terry Gilliam.

Sequel to WHAT?
Featuring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter,
Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen,
Anne Hathaway as the White Queen,
Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and
Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
The March 5, 2010 release, also starring Michael Sheen, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman, is almost like a sequel to the original story.
The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before, yet somehow doesn't remember.

I have no faith whatsoever in this cinematic trophy wife. Tim Burton is clearly illiterate and keeps Johnny Depp around to read for him. Nightmare Before Christmas was cool but you can't adapt Alice in Wonderland solely with concept art. I hope someday a smart person adapts Alice in Wonderland, although I've already said it, I'll say it again:for the love of god, will a smart person please adapt Alice in Wonderland instead of some Cal Arts poseur with midlevel monsterkid credentials.

Ever since you were kid, you’ve loved “Alice in Wonderland.” You grew up reading Lewis Carroll’s classic books, watching the 1951 animated classic, and remembering to never be late for your very important dates.
Now, you’re eager to watch Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s re-imagining that hits theaters March 5th.
But before you do, you might want to know that the movie could more accurately be called “Alice Returns to Underland.”
Burton and Depp have made some significant changes to Carroll’s classic tale -– including the fact that the film doesn’t adapt either one but rather presents a sequel of sorts –- so, read on for a dissection of some of the more significant changes you'll want to note with this latest incarnation.
Alice is a Teenager
Like “Return to Oz” or “Hook,” the story focuses on its main character returning to the realm where a great adventure once occurred. “The story takes place when Alice is 19, and she’s about to enter into a marriage she’s not sure about,” explains writer Linda Woolverton (“The Lion King”) in notes distributed to the press. “Time has passed. The Red Queen rules the whole land. It’s under her thumb.”
Alice in…Underland?
Yep, you read that right -– as it turns out, we’ve been calling the land of whimsical fantasy by the wrong name for all these years. “Underland,” says Woolverton, “is the same fantastical land that Alice visited as a child. But she misheard the word ‘Underland’ and thought they said ‘Wonderland.’ Now, as a girl on the cusp of adulthood, Alice goes back and there she discovers that the real name of the world is Underland.” If nothing else, this makes Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" unique as one of the only movies to ever get its own name wrong on theater marquees nationwide -- on purpose.
Meet the Characters Again
Much like the land in which they reside, we also learn that we’ve been calling Alice’s pals by the wrong names for all these years. The Red Queen is actually named Iracebeth (and an amalgam of the Queen of Hearts from Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and the Red Queen from “Through the Looking-Glass"), The White Queen is named Mirana, The Caterpillar is called Absolem, and The White Rabbit is called McTwisp. “That’s been invented, I believe,” explained the Rabbit voice actor Michael Sheen when we spoke with him and asked where the moniker came from. “As far as I know.”
Underland is the Wrong Side of the Tracks
Early plans for the film were to depict Alice’s fantasy land as the brightly-colored, carefree place you’d expect. But Burton has envisioned an “Underland” in decline after years of being under the rule of the Red Queen. For inspiration, the filmmaker was drawn to a World war II-era photograph of a British family having tea outside their estate under the disheveled skyline of war-torn London. "The thing about Underland," Burton explained in the film’s notes distributed to press, “[is that] like any fairy-tale land, there’s good and the bad.”

Disney's Alice In Wonderland is a monster hit. It clearly becomes the best March release ever with $45 million on Friday. If that holds up, the Tim Burton-directed, Johnny Depp starring fantasy flick could have a $115M-$120M opening weekend for the biggest 3D pic debut ever. (These numbers are blowing away Avatar's first weekend.)
The only other major newcomer this weekend was Overture's Brooklyn's Finest directed by Anton Fuqua and starring Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke opened like most R-rated action films: it had a $5.2M Friday for a likely $14.5M weekend.
Disney's Alice In Wonderland has a real shot at $100 million weekend.
Remember, those higher priced 3D tickets will make all the difference. Even so, the Tim Burton-directed, Johnny Depp-starring fantasy flick will certainly earn $75+M from its 3,728 locations this weekend. Its total domestic 3D count is 2,063 locations, plus 180 Imax 3D engagements, making it the largest 3D bow ever.
Overseas, Alice is expected to shoot to #1 after opening day and date in 40 territories beginning Wednesday.

Looks like it's on the shallow side. I heard from my girlfriend's brother who's a big Tim Burton fan, that it was exactly the movie he thought it would be. I feel like I've already seen it from just what I know about Tim Burton and the script he was using. It's a mistake to add a goal oriented fantasy plot to a piece of absurd literature. I'm boycotting the hell out of this. Giving her some fantasy adventure deprives the world of its meaning and depth and dilutes Lewis Carroll's intentions. Lewis Carroll loved this little girl (romantically, plationically, nonsexually, no matter what people want to think) and her innocence and felt sad for her. He was a professor of mathematics in a society that he knew made no sense and he wanted her to know that it wasn't half as serious as the idiot adults she'd one day be surrounded by think it is. (What do they know? They're nothing but a pack of cards.) It was a dear friend's attempt to reach out to a child and tell her to retain her innocence and not be poisoned by the stupidity around her. Read the book, see the lack of sense around you, know that the game is inconsequential and know that Tim Burton and crew are playing into it, and hard, by making a big budget, CGI filled Hot Topic brainwashing blockbuster. Disney, Tim Burton, everybody that imposed sense and commercialism on an anarchist masterpiece...they're nothing but a pack of cards.

Just my opinion.I don't think a person should use a piece of source material if they don't really care about it. It's why I don't like Kubrick's The Shining. As an author, I would be repulsed if somebody who I'm pretty sure not only hasn't read and comprehended the book, but probably hasn't read A book in years tried to adapt something I wrote. His aesthetic is cool, it's just a shame that he's so empty inside and doesn't try to better himself.

I definally know what you mean with regards to this film but if you look back and take a look at horror and its use of source material i think you have to disagree to some degree...
Though the earlier Frankenstein and Dracula(and Carmilla) films of both Hammer and Universal definally tryed to hold a bit true (and have some regard for) their literary origins the later films in both series were more removed and increasily exploitative of the original works.....But despite this I still love films like Taste the Blood of Dracula, Lust for a vampire, Frankenstein Created woman and the House of Dracula/Frankenstein..
And beyond that - look at what Stuart Gordon did to Re-Animator - I'm sure Gordon has a love for Lovecrafts works but his film adaptations of Re-Animator an dthe Beyond would have 'real' fans and Lovecraft spinning in his grave....

And beyond that - look at what Stuart Gordon did to Re-Animator - I'm sure Gordon has a love for Lovecrafts works but his film adaptations of Re-Animator an dthe Beyond would have 'real' fans and Lovecraft spinning in his grave....
I think the Hammer Draculas did make their own aesthetic and it was a good one, taking things that were repressed in the original because Stoker was scared to death of human sexuality and bringing them to the fore. From what I've heard from Tim Burton, he doesn't seem to get the book or understand its merits very much and while sex doesn't make Dracula less Dracula, a fantasy adventure plot makes Wonderland less Wonderland.

I totally agree with you with Hammer creating its own cannon out of the Dracula (and Frankenstein) series and for the most part it really did work and was in the Vein of (lol) the original novels but at the end of the day i would be suprised about how many of the directors of the films/series i mentioned really read the original novels...
I really like Twins of Evil but I really doubt that the director really gave the original Carmilla novel (which is where the The Karnstein Trilogy+1 prety much comes from) much thought.....I don't think its a case of them getting the book but not needing too...

If you're looking for a date movie, go with Alice, as scuzzy a thing to do as it was, though I'm hearing really good buzz for The Crazies.

Story wise I don't like it. The graphics are okay though.

Posted this over at 'Last seen movie' but thought I would stick it up in here too. I'm interested to see how people compare the movie to the source material and find out from those that enjoyed the film, what I was missing.
Alice in Wonderland: I don't really have any previous experiance with the original story/ stories, beyond the sort of knowledge that one collects naturally over the years. I probably knew enough about Alice to tell people I read the book as a child, but I really have no memory of ever reading it. So I went into this one with pretty much no expectations and still managed to feel like I was watching something well removed from the original source material. I could be well wrong here though. Nothing about this movie managed to draw me in, at any point. I know I'm not exactly the target audiance, but I didn't find it engaging at all. Acting was so-so and the story was pretty much a by the numbers fantasy- action film. The absurd seemed contrived and flat and the 'big' action moments were pretty small.
SPOILER BELOW:
As I said above, I'm not all that familiar with the source material, but is this supposed to be a story about a 19 year old girl? Any sort of childlike innocence and sense of adventure, I was expecting to find, was lost right there. I found the whole experiance kinda cringeworthy, right up to the point Alice came trotting out in full body armour for the final battle. Of course she wasn't wearing a helmet, we need to see that pretty face, don't we?

I really didn't care for Burton's Alice in Wonderland (or as Critic called it, 'Alice Returns to Underland'). So I have little hope for the sequel. But Burton's not directing it sooo...

Yeahhh, Alice ultimately was a disappointment. There are a few interesting bits but it's not very good in total. I'm not sure I'm terribly interested in a sequel.

I loved the new Alice just as much as the original. Maybe since the book is one of my all time favorites though.

I didn't even notice you said they are planning to make a sequel. Agan I am not sure if its something that really needs a sequel. There must be other stories they could tell instead!
