Universal has picked up the rights to the novel Go Mutants! by Larry Doyle for Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer to produce.

Variety reports that Doyle will also write the script for the project, which the paper describes as "a teen comedy/adventure set in a high school where all of the tropes from classic 1950s alien invasion movies came true. Years later, the children of those mutant creatures have assimilated among the other kids."

Doyle says the book and movie "invite" cameos from 1950s creatures like Gort, the galactic peacekeeping robot from The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The Creature is a Universal property, of course, but Gort belongs to Fox last we checked.

The book was purchased on the basis of an outline, and will be finished this summer. Doyle will work on the script at the same time. The author's I Love You, Beth Cooper was recently shot by Chris Columbus and opens next month.
