So, today (in a few hours) I board a plane to the heartland of America. Also known as the midwest, my state of destination is Indiana.

It's my little sisters (my only sibling) graduation from high school. We are full brother and sister, 12 years apart in age. It's important to her and myself, because our parents did not graduate high school. We're two of the few in our families that did.

This is also the end of an era for me. This will be the last time I visit Indiana for anything other than an extremely special occasion. It's part of my life that I'm done with. No more holidays, birthdays, etc. The only funerals I will fly back for will be my parents or my sisters. Weddings, baby showers and other stupid shit are right out.

I'm not a huge family person, although I do love the majority of them dearly. I just have little connection with the majority of them, and I hate the midwest. I'm not black balling or disowning any of them. We still talk over the phone or through email, and that's good enough for me. I just don't see the point in taking time off of work and spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars to go to a family get together. Maybe I'll change my tune in ten years, but for now that's where I stand, and it feels liberating.

Have any of you had to make the same final flight? How do you guys feel about making the decision to sever the old ties so you can get on with your own life?

Enjoy your journey and the occasion, my friend. Savor it as much as you can.

Its good to have a "family" to visit. If they are even half-tolerable, whoopee.

My story - no contact with relations from father's side, little to minimal contact with relations from mother's side. Both are results of bitter, hateful long stories I wont bother putting in fine print. Dont have any idea what my cousins look like. Births happen, deaths happen, but we are away from all contact.

I am the only child of my parents too. So family = me, mother, wife & dog. Period.

When I was 17 I moved from rural Victoria in Australia to Sydney in N,S,W... I went home once a year, but that was enough, I was living around a 14 hour drive from my family. I ended up moving back to Melbourne in Victoria though and then saw my family more often, but still only 2 or 3 times a year.

I have been living on the other side of the world for the last 2 years in the U.K, I feel like I have served some ties as it is hard to keep up with everyone online...

There has been no final trip anywhere though. I like to move and there is always a good reason to revisit somewhere at some stage.

I parted ways with Central PA a few years back, not that life's been treating me any better here, but I needed to be somewhere where I wasn't in danger of getting killed by my almost irrepressible urge to fight the inbred scum around me. No good jobs there either, so my girlfriend could never find work that gave her more than 15 or so hours. Minimum back then was 5.15. Just no way to go back there. I'm pretty sure I won't see that place again.

Yeah, there's not really much there expect corn and streets with no street signs (at least that's been my experience).
