Last thing I heard, was the developers had gone back to reverse engineering their systems.

They should just change the name to "Duke Nukem Never" and laugh when people ask them when it will be done.

Reminds me of PC Gamer's coconut monkey "Gravy trader" saga. People thought it was for real, but really, when a CGI character says they are making a game that is a Strategy/real-time/fps/roleplaying/micromanagement game, you'd think they would get the hint....

I bet there were never any intentions to do the game, they thought up the idea of stringing gamers along over an afternoon coffee break.

Nice lighting effects for 1998.

They were using the unreal engine at the time, which did some nice colored lighting.

it looks like it would have been great. Now, if they bothered to release it sometime in the next year, they could do it in the unreal 3.0 engine (Bioshock, Unreal Tournament 2007, Gears of War) and make it stunning. If they included the old "Shake it, baby." move, they would definately get an MA rating :D

it would be the dream of masturbating game geeks everywhere

Veteran games developer 3D Realms has closed down because of a lack of funds.

Founded in 1987, the firm popularised the concept of shareware gaming and produced the seminal Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D first-person shooters.

The company was working on a follow-up title, Duke Nukem Forever, which after being in development for 12 years has become the object of industry derision.

Publisher Take-Two says it will no longer fund development of the game but retains rights to the title.

"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," said Take-Two's Alan Lewis in a statement.

There has been no official comment from 3D Realms, other than a forum posting from the company's webmaster, Joe Siegler, who said: "It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time."

Other companies with links to 3D Realms or the Duke Nukem series were quick to distance themselves.

In a posting on Twitter, Apogee Software said it was "officially not affected by the situation at 3DRealms".

"Development of the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned and further announcements about upcoming games will be made in the near future," the statement added.

Guardian newspaper games writer Steve Boxer said it was astonishing 3D Realms had not finished the game after more than a decade of development.

"It would have been nice to see another Duke Nukem game, but given they had more than 12 years it's just incompetence of the highest order.

"3D Realms made some great games in the past, but they got overtaken by the 21st Century.

"Sadly, Duke Nukem Forever was the most aptly named title in the history of games. Now, it's just Duke Nukem Never."

Yeah, heard about this the other day. It's not surprising, but it's sad. The analogy I made is that 3DR is like the oldest dog in the pound that finally gets put to sleep. Sure, he's ugly, worthless, and is basically only good for eating all the food....but he's just been there so long, you love him anyway.

...and you'll miss him.

They should make a cheesy, over the top action movie based on this guy.

When 3D Realms closed last year after failing to deliver the game, Gearbox Studios revealed that it was in an extremely lucky position to have good relations with publisher 2K Games, and know about the brand enough (Pitchford himself worked on Duke Nukem 3D) to easily take over development. At this point it was effectively complete and just needed to be strung together and polished, and with help from some of the original staff, Gearbox has been secretly finishing the game for over a year. As such, the title is playable from beginning to end and is well on target for release early next year. In short, the game they're releasing isn't just in name only, but will be the actual project that's been teased all this time.

Duke Nukem Forever will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC early next year.
