View Full Version : My reaction to horror movies.

So last night I ended up watching Inside, at the reccomendation of quite a few people in HDC. (Shout outs to Chrono, UngodlyWarlock and Roshiq) Thank you, it was a great movie, and just what I needed. It not only cured my inability to watch horror movie, but also got me out of a creative rut.
I ended up recording myself watching the last half hour or the movie. I didn't even think to record the whole thing until I realized how brutal some parts were. I really wish I had caught my face at one certain part that I won't spoil here. Anyway I edited the video and posted it on youtube.
hZaG_AW-50I
Now for the creativity part. I have wanted to start a horror blog for about a year now. Problem is, I'm not the best writer, and there are a trillion horror blogs out there, all writing about the same thing. I was thinking last night, that a friend and I could record our reactions while watching horror movies and write short blog posts about our thoughts on the movie.
I need you to let me know if you think this will fly, if you find it entertaining, what you would like to see, etc.
Thank you soooo much,
Jen.

Now..that's actually a pretty funny and nice idea. I'm not sure whether all the blog members can respond in that way (rec. the vdo while watching a film and then upload it) or be honest with your idea like rec. their true reactions as the way you did...
Anyway, it's really nice to see you in the vdo, mac.:)
Btw, have you seen [REC.]? It's not as brutal or bloody like Inside but it definitely has some pretty surprise scary moments and that may worth a reaction vdo.

Yeah I have already seen Rec. I absolutely loved it, lots of surprising bits. I'm gonna probably make up a list of movies I haven't seen, or haven't watched in a long time.
I think it would actually be kinda hard to fake your reactions when you really get into it. Like I just turned the webcam on and then popped up my movie on top. Completely forgot it was on for a while.

Next on your list should be Martyrs.
That's the plan, and the whole reason I watched Inside. You guys should be in for a ton of laughs with that one.
My friend on Twitter just gave me the idea of using youtube's annotations to put a time stamp from the movie on my video so anyone who watches the movie can see where I flinched or cried or whatever.
It's such a fun time going from scared watching a movie, and then laughing watching myself watch a movie.

Well, it's an interesting idea. The challenge is going to be- from this point forward you're going to be increasingly aware of the camera. It will be difficult to maintain your objectivity and not have tucked in the back of your mind questions of performance and your audience.
The first time is honest and real. How do you recreate that ambiance?

I have an amazing reaction of 3 work mates watching BME pain olympics - the pic is on my phone i'll try get it off it..
Basically - the other designer was talking about some sick shit he saw on the Net - i said have u seen BME PAIN OLYMPICS. he said no and looked it up..he was shocked and called 2 other ppl from the office in. They well all shocked the photo is priceless.
They went 'how can u watch that sick shit?'
I repilied 'I've never seen it...' whcih was true,
I felt like HArlan exposing them to the Videodromesignel.

It didn't look like you were having a very good time watching this movie.
I don't think it would be very interesting if I taped myself watching something...I don't think I really react much except by trying to solve the whole thing (who's doing it and why) as soon as I pick up a clue, or when I yell at people for doing stupid things that cause them to get killed...I can't even count the number of times I've said, "Now, cut off his head, dammit" or smash his head, shoot him in the head, whatever makes the most sense at the time...Oh, and I'm always telling them to stop screaming because it's annoying as hell, gets them caught, and keeps them from thinking and acting rationally. God, I would have killed the brunette in 'Broken' myself, just to shut her up.
Your video was interesting to watch, tho...Thanks for sharing :)
ha ha....you're such a girl :p
You did look a bit uncomfortable watching that.

I like the idea, certainly cant hurt giving it a try. Anything a little different to seperate your blog from others.
NE made a good point though, you will be aware of the camera and it would be important to not play up to it, even slightly.
I was happy to see how uncomfortable you were watching Inside though, horror films shouldnt be an easy watch (although most are).

Next on your list should be Martyrs.
I watch Martyrs last night, and,I found it disturbing, but not as disturbing as people were saying it was,I haven't seen Inside yet.Cannibal Holocaust disturbed me more than Martyrs did.The first time I watched it I had to turn it off,I did watch it again a different day,and get through the whole film.

I'm finding some stuff on youtube right now to watch...I'll post the video link to what I'm going to watch, then I'll post my reaction
I'm saying youtube, because I currently don't get cable at my house, and it would be pointless to post a reaction to something I've already seen IMO...

haha! That was great Miss Macabre and probably what my reaction will be like watching Inside (I think it's in the Netflix queue for next week), based on what I've heard of it.
Regarding Martyrs, I didn't think it was very gory, very brutul, but not very gory. I found it very emotionally draining as it really strips away your expectations of how horror is depicted. Very high brow, especially the ending. I probably haven't watch a movie that disturbed me as much as when I saw Audition for the first time in the 90's before J-Horror was big.
That being said, Martyrs was amazing and I do highly recommend it, but I think it's for a very narrow audience. So, you should watch it and tape your reaction. :D I'm interested to see how someone else would react to this movie. I watched it when I was alone in the house for the week, so I was already feeling kind of isolated going in.

Well I know what you're getting at and completely understand that it will be a difficult thing to do. That said I'm an empath, so I really get caught up in movies. I'm like that with books too. It's a form of entertainment but it becomes more like I'm living it. I also think I will continue to tape these late at night when I am already a little worn out, makes the movies a little better for me.
@Urgeok Sorry about the nail biting. I usually crack my knuckles when I'm feeling nervous but I ran out of knuckles to crack within the first 40 minutes. Then I started to bite at my nails. and thank you for saying I have pretty eyes. :)
@Nightmare_of_Death haha you make me look like a goof over reacting to everything. Not sure what scene you were watching exactly, maybe I reacted similarly.
@bloody_ribcut at 1:24 (highlight) a pregnant woman got hit really hard in the stomach with a baseball bat, inducing labour.

I really like the idea, but have a few of the concerns that people have more or less already expressed (mostly neverending).
I think as long as you keep your reactions honest, and be sure to add a little blurb and interesting things with each movie, then it seems like it should be very entertaining.

For more ridiculous movies like slashers and stuff I yell, or throw up my arms in frustration at character's stupidity. I've never been in a situation where I'm being stalked by some invincible killer, but I don't think my first reaction would be to slink off into some dark corner with my bf for a quickie, or to run up a flight of stairs and barracade myself in the room farthest from the exit and then board up the door but not the window behind me. Movies are so stupid sometimes, and it actually makes me so mad. Not because I've seen so many slashers that I know what will happen, but because I'm a huge fan of planning, and common sense.
So this video has over 120 views in less than 24 hours. The blog is in the works but I am having DNS issues at the moment that I can't fix, and I made a twitter to promote with but their service is down and I'm unable to sign in. So I am at a stand still for tonight.

if a movie is really well done - i get into it as far as enjoying it goes .. but i dont believe i have any reactions other than smiling..
(i'll laugh if something is really well done nasty because i appreciate what went into it and excess is funny to me)
oh - and i'm sure i frown when a movie is pissing me off.... i hate wasting my time on crap.

Same here (except that I'm sure I like a lot of movies that many would consider 'crap' :))
For the really inventive kills; creative, amazing special effects; and anything I haven't seen before, I'm likely to react in an even more positive/approving manner, often even throwing out a verbal "niiiice" or "awesome"...And occasionally a "WHOA, did you SEE THAT?" Along with a rewind to watch it again

now that's something i dont do ..
never rewind .. never just watch bits of a movie.
in fact - i wont stop a movie after its started. i wont anwser the phone (well - i never do anyway), or the door ... wont pause for breaks ...
i try to recreate the positive aspects of a theatre experience as much as possible whenever i watch a movie at home.

i'm by no means desensitized to hostility .. i cant even watch the fucking news ..
i cant stand any kind of violence or even confrontation in real life ... but after so many years of watching flicks - i never forget that it's 'just a movie' no matter how much i'm into it.

Same with me. I watched this video of the Bradford Football disaster. Basically, within four minutes of a cigarette being thrown down onto a wooden stand (I think it happened in the 80s/early 90s), An entire side of the stadium was up in flames. Policemen spontaneously burst into a ball of fire and people were crawling over the sides to get away from the heat with their clothes smoking. It was really just horrible to watch, and it only happened about 20 minutes from where I live. However, in a film I can't care less.
In fact, it's quite funny, I find myself mimicking the characters facial expressions, even if they're very obscure. Other people have laughed at me doing that too. :o

I don't know what is wrong with me but I don't laugh at comedies. Maybe something like dead alive, or reanimator, or evil dead. Flat out comedy movies bore me. Will Farell especially. I do laugh at Brit comedy a lot though. I will think about it.
Tearjerkers do get me. There hasn't been a time when the climax of Benny and Joon hasn't had me bawling. I'm tentative to post a video of me crying though.
For both laughing and crying, I don't think I could post that. Me feeling uncomfortable and sad, or scared is fine for some reason. I just have this crooked smile that makes me look silly when I laugh, and I wrinkle my nose up weird when I cry and I am so awkward looking. Maybe though.

I thought the whole experiment was about showing yourself being open and vulnerable, eh? Push yourself!
And if you're defining comedy as Will Ferrel movies, no wonder you don't laugh.
Everyone has their limits, I guess.

Not as many gross out reactions in this one, I was mostly reading the subs. Luckily, I knew enough french to go without reading at some parts. I also did a lot of laughing at myself for being scared and jumpy, and some talking to myself when people were being stupid.
