Variety reports that director David Cronenberg's 1983 sci-fi cult classic Videodrome is next up on the remake chopping block.

The original film, which was ahead of its time in exploring complex questions about violence in American media culture, will be updated for a more modern take.

The approach will "infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller."

Screenwriter Ehren Kruger (Arlington Road, The Ring) will pen the remake to which Cronenberg is not attached in any fashion as of yet.

Kruger's latest work is about to roll out to theatres across the country, having co-written Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

I've accepted the fact that every movie with a decent cult following is going to be remade and most are going to be disapointing and yet I always see them. To some movies credit they aren't all bad and I even enjoy them but I really can't see how this is going to be good.... at all.

Never one to miss an opportunity to take a celebrated cult film and butcher it into a large-scale action spectacle, Hollywood has decided it wants to tackle a retelling of David Cronenberg's "Videodrome."

Deadline reported that commercial director Adam Berg is in talks to helm the story about the head of a television station who becomes transfixed with a sadistic and deadly TV series known as "Videodrome." Cue vagina stomachs, gooey VHS tapes, and James Woods making out with a pulsing television set.

Universal apparently wants to modernize things, with the addition of nano-technology, and all the CG-heavy, sci-fi action you can expect from the studio.

Ehren Kruger ("The Ring," "The Ring 2") wrote the updating of the 1983 movie. Remaking a Cronenberg film — especially one of his early body horror masterpieces — is no easy task. We're not thrilled with the news, but we're willing to see what the new flesh has in store just so we can say, "We told you so."
