Dear Horror Lovers,

We're currently in the process of producing a psychological horror set around a lake.

Contact with the lake's water does not prove fatal. However is does have the tendency to gradually change the characters' personalities.

We have been searching for plausible physical manifestations on the body caused by contact with the water.

Originally our idea was to have a black mark appear on the skin of every character that comes into contact with the water.

Here's our question: What would be a more original, nastier manifestation? Any ideas on how to show the water's effect? For story reasons we must visually see the water's effect on the body.

Any suggestions are deeply appreciated and may lead to closer collaboration in the finalization of the film, including mention in the Special Thanks section of the credits.

All the Best,

LeAuguste

Very scary pruning!

You're welcome.

But seriously, if you aren't creative enough to come up with something scarier than "gradually changing the charater's personalities" maybe you shouldn't be making a horror movie.

The water makes them turn into catfish.

Scary pruning was an idea scrapped a long time ago. But seriously, if you aren't creative enough to come up with something scarier, maybe you shouldn't reply to threads... just a thought.

I come up with better ideas for a living and I'm not about to start sharing them with you.

Best of luck with your film

I apologize, I did not realize you were a porn writer. But seriously "Dark Penis Rising" was great! We're all in awe of your work here at Scheissewood Studios.

When you're done with your petty bragging, maybe you should get back to your idea factory. It needs some attention.

:D That was actually pretty funny. Most of my films barely qualify as better than porn.

What is your budget?

Are you looking for practical make-up effects or digital manipulation of the actors' images?

Water sloshing around in the white of the eyeball could be subtle and unnerving.
Tanslucant flesh (amphibian style) would be gross, but a rather expensive proceedure.

What's in the water? An organism? A poison? A curse?

Jesus end the childish fighting! He just asked for constructive help. Look make it something simple. Like start with their eyes turning red and then a change of skin color. Not like crazy change like a nasty corpse like grey. And of course sweating from mental stress never hurts.

@Roderick

Thanks for the constructive input.

As for the budget I cannot give you an exact figure. We're re-writing now with two producers attached. We're looking to do it for less than 2m.

We're looking for make-up effects rather than digital manipulation. Although, at this point we're not excluding any options. I do love the watery eyeball idea.

The audience never finds out exactly what is in the water, but we do allude to mysticism in the lake's surroundings.

The reason we're struggling with the physical manifestation is because there is a leg amputation scene in the script. The characters become so distraught that they feel their only way to survive and regain normalcy/ sanity is by cutting off the limbs affected by the water. In the scene it is the leg, because it is the first part of the body to touch the water. An expanding mark would therefore be the best option.

@TheShape

I agree, I'd like to keep it simple. And we don't necessarily need anything crazy or gross for the sake of the genre. It's even possible that the solution lies in the character's imagination. That there is, in fact, nothing wrong with the skin, but that it's simply imagined.

Whichever way we choose to proceed, we need to find a way to manifest the changes visually, and if it's something to do with water, great. An idea is molding of the skin, symbolizing the mental decay, connected to humidity.

Any Thoughts?

well you can never go wrong with halucinations (sp) like a guy looking in the mirror and seeing something happen to his face in the mirror that isnt happening. Also maybe tooth decay from grinding teeth or just whatevers in the water. Visions of dead people is good and fucked up nightmares. Pretty much making the character have a really bad trip lol.

Algae or kelp. They're becoming part of the ecosystem as it becomes a part of them.

Any flesh that touches the water begins to rot/decay. The rot spreads slowly throughout the body, thus the limb chopping.

Sounds alot like leperacy (sp). If this is supposed to be a supernatural thriller then you want the change to be more mental than physical. A good example is the most recent Amityville Horror. Ryan Reynolds did a great job showing mental change just through body language. Then there were the physical changes like him vomitting and his hands become rough from working on the house so muchThe lack of sleep. etc. Try using some of the symptoms of cabin fever. Not the movie but the mental instibility. This involves excessive sleep, paranoia(sp), unnessisary laughter, and sometime halusinations.

They could be hallucinating that their skin is rotting and cut off limbs out of delusion. ???

have you ever seen honeycomb tripe? It is an incredible-looking bit of calf's stomach

The exposed skin could take on an appearance like this...halfway between pruning and actual decay - it could be quite unnerving

keep the water but make it dark like black water.(black lake)the contact with the water make them crazy/evil. the water is like a malignant shadow.it unleashes the blackness of the persons soul.exmaple child setting a parent on fire. husband hog ties his family and put them in the trunk of the car.
its just an idea.

I think the black water would be much. Something like that would make me as a veiwer go "No lets not worry about the water being black. It couldnt hurt us." sarcasm like ya know? You have to get into the veiwer's head. Make it look like ordinary water so people will be paranoid about their water after watching it lol.

Just an idea- How about the lake is a private lake owned by some guy with a secret. Some people get lost and find this lake and think its paradise. A few of them go swimming and one of them gets bit by some wormlike creature. They hurry out of the lake and try to help the victim but they see this wormlike creaure enter through the ear. Enter owner who has look o0f despair but offers help. Bottom line- This parasite turns the victim into a large parasite ALA the Grundel fly and the owners secret is his child or wife has turned into a Grundel flylike creature and he needs the people to feed said Monster. When the first victim finally evolves into parasite he can save the last survivor and kill the owner and the owner's secret then return to the lake. Just an idea off the top of my head. Good luck and tell me what you come up with.
