Hey folks. Matt Maxwell here. Originally from Southern California (can't bring myself to call it 'SoCal'), now hiding in the Sierra Nevada foothills in northern Cal. Former digital animator/modeler (no big projects to brag about, sorry) turned dad turned comic book writer (the graphic novel/webcomic series Strangeways (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/strangeways) is my thing, not that you've heard of it, necessarily.)
Old enough to have seen RE-ANIMATOR, DAY OF THE DEAD and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD in theatres without having to sneak in. Learned everything I know about horror from betamax tapes and cable TV. Oh, and FAMOUS MONSTERS from the late seventies to the middle eighties. Cronenberg, Carpenter and Romero count among my favorites, at least when they're on. I've seen kinda flat offerings from all three as well.
Happy to be here. I'll get the next round, assuming there's a good scotch in this place.

Nope. This place is scotchguarded. I'm the Scotch guard. Because I called it.

Welp, I can switch to tequila. It's more of a Spring/Summer drink anyways.
I'll check out the drinking thread in due course.

Reminds me of a friend who lives in Northern Virginia. They call it NOVA.
Welcome to the bunch anyhow

NOVA? Aw, jeez.
I worked in North Hollywood for a time and they were trying to call it "NOHO".
Lemme tell ya, there was plenty of HO there...

I know right? Pretty Lame....I'm glad where I'm from actually has a name not some inconsitent, low reception of an acronym like NOVA-no offense to people that consider themselves apart of "Northen VA" just think the city names are fine in that situation.

Hi. What comics do you read?

Don't read a lot of monthly comics right now, mostly the collections and such. Some webcomics too. Split Lip by Sam Costello (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/splitlip/) and my own western/horror comic Strangeways (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/strangeways/) come to mind immediately.
Other stuff I read regularly.
Hellboy, though I'm not as fond of it as I once was.
The Goon, still strong, but I'm switching to trades as of this arc.
BPRD, Guy Davis is tops in my book, and the writing is sharp.
The Zombies That Ate the World, picked up the first issue as a taster and will wait out for the collection (or pick up the issues cheap). More Guy Davis goodness and a biting sense of humor to match.
Age of Bronze, not horror in the slightest, but a really great historical comic about the Trojan War by the unparalleled Eric Shanower.
Lone Wolf and Cub, only the best samurai manga ever.
Most any Grant Morrison-written comic. Again, not horror, often superhero action, but he does it well (mostly) and offers up plenty of thought-provoking ideas along with the plot. Didn't care for his recent big event comic, though.
Getting into the Creepy/Eerie archives and a lot more period horror in general.
Reading a lot of Alex Toth comics to learn what I can from his minimalist storytelling style and how he approaches a page. They're also damn good, by and large.
Hope that helps you out. I really should repost this to the comics forum as well. Recommendations are always welcome (but keep in mind that I gave up on THE WALKING DEAD a long, long time ago and don't see myself coming back to it.)
