I didn't see a thread or post on this....if there is one...forgive me

Producer Neal Moritz (I Am Legend) and Columbia are in final negotiations to remake Total Recall, Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi classic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," that smash, in which Arnold played a futuristic Average Joe who may or may not be a secret agent determined to free Mars from its draconian leaders, grossed $261 million worldwide. As Quaid, Arnold slayed Sharon Stone, flirted with three-breasted women, and tracked down a creepy freedom-fighter named Kuato. After 19 years, Moritz is hoping the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects will help refresh the story.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein had once hoped to develop a remake (or sequel) when they still ran Miramax, but Columbia secured the rights when the Weinsteins left to start their own company.

no idea what a remake would bring to the table.

the film is too well know to warrant a 'reintroduction' to new fans

the origional was well made

i dont see the point. i'm not going to piss and moan about it like someone killed my dog - i just dont understand why they'd bother.

I can't imagine a remake of this. It wasn't that long ago and the SFX were fine. Also, I just can't picture anyone replacing Arnold as Doug Quaid.

Agree, Im struggling to see the point to a remake (apart from the $$s)

However, I would probably still go and see it out of curiosity

bah - BAH!

What's Total Recall without the cutting edge claymation?! NOTHING!!

How can you possibly remake THAT?!

And why would you want to?

Seems a weird choice for a remake but its not surprising after rumours of the Robocop remake.

Columbia Pictures has set Kurt Wimmer to write "Total Recall," the remake of the 1990 sci-fi pic that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Wimmer has been working with the studio on "Salt," the Phillip Noyce-directed espionage thriller starring Angelina Jolie. Wimmer wrote the story for that film and shares screen credit with Brian Helgeland.

Wimmer also co-wrote the F. Gary Gray-directed "Law Abiding Citizen," which stars Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, for the Film Department.

"Total Recall" was resurrected for remake earlier this year by the studio and producer Neal Moritz and his Original Films banner.

Pic will be a contemporized adaptation of the science fiction saga based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale."

Columbia secured remake rights from Miramax, which has the option to co-finance the film when it is ready to shoot.

I dont have any special connection to the original or anything (never actually seen the whole thing, to be honest), but I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that they're starting to remake movies released in my lifetime....not sure if I should start feeling old, or just really sickened by Hollywood.

sickened by Hollywood.

This. Hollywood needs to stop being so damn lazy.

I'd see this, though I struggle to see the point other than money as well.

But I doubt it'd be half as good as the original.

Then again, there've been some remakes that've kicked the original's ass, so who knows?

remakes ARE the history of Hollywood and film in general

You gotta admit its become more of a subgenre than earlier on in film history.

Kate Beckinsale has been offered one of the female leads in the Total Recall remake -- the Sharon Stone role, which is the juicer of the two in the original film if you ask me.

However, Deadline reports that Beckinsale, who is married to the remake's director Len Wiseman, hasn't yet accepted the gig.

The other female lead is that of Melina (played in the original by Rachel Ticotin). Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are leading the race on that front, reportedly.
