I have never seen this movie although it received awesome reviews. I became interested so I watched the trailer it looks extremely stupid. Is this movie really that great, and what makes it as good as people make it out to be. It looks like a low-budget with cheap effects. Someone please explain the fascination with this so I know whether I should rent it or not.

It is a great film, totally over the top and mind blowingly gory. You really should see it as you won't regret it.

That is the fascination - if you dont appreciate low budget horror, you wont find much to like here.
IMO, it's a brilliantly funny, obscenely gory splatterfest, and a damn good time. If you're not into that...I'm sorry, but you wont like it much.

I won't be friends with anyone who doesn't like this film. More impressive than the gore or the comedy, is the directing. Jackson's promise is clearly on display. Discovering this film shortly after it came out was a revelation and the film announced a new major talent.
If you are over 18 and haven't yet seen this film, you've been cheating yourself (and possibly living in a cave)

Be sure to check out Braindead not Dead Alive as the later is cut. Pretty sure the UK releases are trimmed too. The German DVD is an uncut print.

My NZ tape runs for 105 mins while the US Unrated DVD is 97mins.
There's a scene at the dinner table trimmed and so is the scene with the baby in the park I believe.

You also have to take into account that NTSC runs faster than Pal - 30 frames per sec vs 25 for VHS.

Yeh that's true. It's a case of a few thing trimmed nothing along the lines of being totally butchered... I just noticed a few things missing when I caught it on DVD.
