View Full Version : Finally revealed - ___V___'s daily life in pictures!

_____V_____
02-10-2009, 06:16 AM
Yes, the mysterious __V__ has a daily real life too, (for reals!!) in which he grinds himself from morning till night everyday (except weekends), managing between a full-time job, family, and social responsibilities.

Very surprised?

I know...but like I keep telling young FerretChucker, its all about time management.

Anyway, my home is a modestly large house. With 3 bedrooms and attached toilets for each, drawing and living room spaces, dining room and kitchen, plus 2 storerooms to stash the (immediate) unwanted stuff away. Most houses here are made according to floor maps which do not have attics or cellars, so none of those exist in our house either.

This is the drawing room, the first room you ll see as soon as you enter our home (from the left) :-

Usually weekends.

I take it out for weekend shopping and for a drive, usually when we decide to eat out at someplace nearby, or when we decide to go visit relatives.

She uses hers more often. She finds it easier to move back and forth with. The car she uses for shopping, long drives to meetings etc. She works too...as an Accountant.

hard to picture that on a bike :)

Only for formal and social occasions.

Her officewear is different - sometimes the salwar kameez (often worn by Punjabi women), and sometimes shirt and jeans.

Makes it easier to ride the bike too, doncha think?

Thanks, Doc.

Its a tough life - with both of us busy in full-time jobs...managing home and office together can be pretty stressful sometimes. The weekends are our stress relievers, basically. It gives us time to be together and to manage all jobs at home which are pending for the week.

The holidays are our real getaways. We look forward to escaping reality with a long tour somewhere out of town. Best time of the year - the summer vacations. :)

Thanks for sharing all that V. You have a beautiful home, a beautiful wife and a beautiful doggie. I hope Rolls is doing better and you all are doing well. :) Balancing busy work lives and home life can be stressful, but it sounds like you guys know what's important and find time to be together as a family, and in my opinion, that's the key. It is an amazing place. Like I said to Vod once, see this country with your own eyes before forming your opinion of it from the movies and cable TV channels.

I am sure you ll like it here.

You better. I d urge anyone who can afford it, to give this place a visit at least once in their lifetime.

Rolls is doing quite well. The meds and shots he's on right now seem to be working a wee bit. He stands a lot more now (still limps though), and the 2 nodules on his tail look a bit smaller than before. The docs will be arriving tomorrow morning to give their diagnosis though, so we will really know if he has improved any. Thanks for inquiring, bud. :)

Very nice V. Nice home ya got there and a pretty wife.

Not to be a "buttinski", but I was wondering if that was you V. If that is you, awesome, but if you're not willing to admit that, then your "friend" has a very kind face and you should photograph him more, maybe this time without the hand in front of his face so we can see his nice smile. :D

Undoubtedly. You must have read my review in the Last Seen Movie thread.

I am terribly disappointed with that flick. Not only does it portray this country differently, but also because Danny Boyle has come across as a very responsible and talented filmmaker.

For him to make this flick, AND collecting awards for his effort, is a really sad and pathetic fact. People need to wake up away from this "fantasy" real life that Slumdog has portrayed of India. The real India is far, far different.

Although I have been planning for this thread for quite some time. Slumdog certainly wasnt the ONLY reason behind this effort.

FINALLY! And thanks for the mention as well. You must be bloody amazing at time management though, to do all the wonderful stuff you do here and spend time with the wife, work and all of the other daily activities. Bravo!

Really interesting to see what Indian life is like, as it is with any culture (except the dutch. Damn them all). Really nice home you've got there. The outside views of India remind me a bit of Egypt. I know they're in 2 different continents, but there is something there that seems familiar.

_____V_____
02-10-2009, 09:39 AM
The open roads on both sides must leave that impression of Egypt.

The area where I live and the road leading to my office is actually out in the suburb outskirts of the city. It is still under plenty of development (roads widening, underground cable & underground drainage/sewage systems), so pavements and streets are still a few years off.

These same driving pics would look much more sophisticated and crowded in about 5 years or so. The city is developing in this direction at a rapid pace, and the real estate rates have shot up about 5-6 times in the past couple years.

The Gateway to the Palace of the Maharaja of Bastar

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/gateway.jpg

After India became independent of British rule back in 1947, the Maharaja continued to rule for 10-11 more years over this area (known as Bastar). He had a lot of command over the local tribals and so when the princely states were siezed from the Kings and Princes to become a part of democratic India, the King of Bastar put up a stubborn fight along with his tribal army. Finally the King was defeated and killed, alongwith thousands of tribals. All their dead bodies were loaded on trucks and thrown off a huge waterfall about 35 miles from here.

The present Palace has a section still devoted to the present descendants of the royal family. It also houses 2 colleges and a big library, alongwith some small shops. It is situated in the middle of the city.

The renovated remains of the Palace behind the Gateway

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/palace.jpg

The colleges are to the left. One is a girls college (now defunct), and the other is a co-ed one. The library and the royal home is to the right.

The Lake

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/lake1.jpg

Once it used to be the city dump. All of it was removed and burnt outside the city, and the whole place was transformed into an artificial lake. Over the years, it has grown quite big and now stretches for almost 6 miles on all sides. A temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated in the centre, which is accessible by boat only.

The Lake's Evening Spot

For rest and relaxation in the evenings. Also for nice, quiet evening strolls. Boats are available if you want to go on a cruise along the lake.

The Chariots of the Gods

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/chariot2.jpg

These are the local, wooden chariots which are used during the big Chariot festival in June-July. The local presiding dieties are loaded on them and they are pulled across from one place to another, signifying the Gods moving to a better place for rest from the summer heat. After a gap of 10 days, the chariots are pulled back to the Main Temple and the Gods are moved back into their places, signifying their return back.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/chariot1.jpg

Each chariot is about 60-65 feet tall, and is pulled by at least 35-40 strong men holding two big, long ropes in front.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/market.jpg

A scene from the busy local market on Sunday, the market day. Vegetables and spices are sold separately. And its busy and crowded as hell on Sundays. Can get really exasperating!

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Fish.jpg

The local fishmonger from whom I get my fish. There are about 20 of them in several shops in a line. My fishmonger is the last one, and always has the freshest fish available.

Markets, hu, you should try going to the Vic Markets in Melbourne on a Saturday, you can hardly breath. Once I took orders from my family as I was heading down to my home town that day, I had to buy over 100 dollars of seafood, a fucking nightmare ona Saturday. Every stall is impossible to get to, then I ran out of cash and had to lug what I had to an atm and go back for more hell. And it was near 40 dgc. I thought all the seafood was going to fry before I got it to the eski. I miss the Vic Markets so much though, nothing like that here in Glasgow. I used to go dureing the week, just for the freedom.

The whole world celebrated Diwali on the night of the 17th. It's the Indian equivalent to Halloween you can say, but its the biggest festival of India. Celebrated by lighting lamps and exploding firecrackers, and worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Apologies for the quality of the pics...they were taken by my Nokia 5800 and not a regular camera.

The entrance of the house is decorated with a colorful, big-sized rangoli...

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/2-1.jpg

Another angle..

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/1-1.jpg

That rangoli may look small on the pics, but its a huge one. Wife made sure it covered half of the road and almost all of the space in front of the gates.

Small pair of feet impressions are made from the rangoli to the entrance of the house, signifying the Goddess's visit to the home...

Very cool pics, V! The rangoli is like a carpet?

What else happens during the festival? Music & feasting?

Thanks.

No, the rangoli is made from scratch using powders of different colors. Takes a lot of skill, patience and time. One big rangoli takes at least 4-5 hours to prepare.

Basically the whole house is decorated and lights are lit everywhere. The theory being that no part of the house should be in darkness...its considered inauspicious. All the family members wear new clothes and make a lot of sweet food items to distribute to friends and relatives.

Then a long puja (worship with mantras) is done for Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Kali and also we sit down and pray for the peace of all the souls of our ancestors.

Then come the firecrackers.

Some people indulge in gambling and drinking through the night too. Gambling is usually done with very heavy amounts, and since its illegal to gamble over here, police crack down on them.

The next day after Diwali is usually a holiday. In this year's case, it was a Sunday anyway. The holiday is used to visit each other's homes and wish them a Happy Diwali.

The Ramayana. One of the many sacred stories associated with Diwali.

http://images.exoticindiaart.com/books/ramayana_idc608.jpg

It is supposed to be the night of celebration in all of Ayodhya, Prince Rama's kingdom, when he returns back to his kingdom with his wife, Sita, and his younger brother Lakshman after defeating the evil Ravana, the demon ruler of Lanka.

One of two sacred Hindu epic mythologies of all time. The other one being, of course, the Mahabharata.

It's been awhile...

...but finally, I got the chance (and some much-needed free time) to take a trip of the city I live in. Be warned though, I am armed with only my Nokia 2700 with a very humble 2.0 MP camera without flash!

So, without any further ado, let's go!

Headed towards the entrance to the city of Jagdalpur

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0001.jpg'

The Kumharpara Chowk (translation - junction) - Entry into Jagdalpur

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0002.jpg

I am coming from the city. The road to the left leads outside to the National Highway (Interstate, like you call it), and the road to the right goes past the Airport to turn around and head into the Bus Terminals. We will go through the road on the right shortly to see the entrance to the Airport.

Kumharpara Chowk from the other side

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0003.jpg

Beautiful, aren't they? The lighting isn't so good because its very cloudy today. We have been experiencing afternoon storms and thundershowers lately. The road on the left heads into the city, the way I came from.

The "Wall"

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0004.jpg

A statement by the uber-talented artists of this region, slightly beside the Chowk. A long stretch of wall of the Civil Supply Office, decorated with an artist's impressions of a typical Bastar (regional) marriage procession. We will go close to the "Wall" in a bit.

Entrance to the Airport

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0005.jpg

Closed and guarded heavily. Entry without written permission prohibited. The entire Airport is under the control of the military, since the times this became a Maoist-infested region. No commercial flights have started yet, although there is a strong possibility of private flights starting from July.

City proper starts from here

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0011.jpg

As is evident by the buildings on both sides, and increase in traffic on the road.

The Shahid Park

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0012.jpg

Just like any other normal greenery-covered park. With plenty of benches to sit, and lots of children stuff for them to play around. Entrance is near the white wall on the far left. (near the person) Will take some pics of inside the park soon.

The Artificial Waterfall

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0013.jpg

Took this pic from the side, not from the front. It looks like a bunch of rocks right? After sunset, they open the pipes above and let the water splash down, with plenty of dazzling lights. It is a sight to watch then. Hence I didn't bother taking a better pic of this. Will get the night pic of this soon.

The Jhankaar Movie Theater

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0014.jpg

Going through expansion right now to seat a few hundred more. Entrance is near the very far left (hidden behind the cars and two-wheelers parked in front). This one runs the some of the most recent Hollywood releases.

Small theater. Very comfortable. Nice sound and picture quality. Doesn't boast of anything.

SBI Main Branch, Jagdalpur

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0017.jpg

The main bank of the city. SBI, of course, stands for State Bank of India, the largest bank in India.

Main city area

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0018.jpg

The road heads straight into the heart of the city, with all sorts of shops on both sides of the road till its end. We will go through this road sometime in the future. Very crowded, lots of traffic - shoppers and on-road alike - and in the evenings it gets uncontrollably loud and congested.

Turning to the left from this road...

The Chandni Chowk

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0019.jpg

Another fine example of tribal art of this area. Roundabout junction.

The road left leads to the Artificial Waterfall, Shahid Park and back towards the Kumharpara Chowk.

The road straight ahead leads towards the SBI Collectorate Branch, the Collectorate and SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) office, the AIR (All-India Radio) office, the Sessions Court of Jagdalpur and onward towards the Bus Terminals and the west exit from the city.

The road to the right leads to the Maharani Hospital, the main Sanjay Market area, and onward towards the road home. We shall proceed there.

Oh, and in case you are wondering what the hell that contraption in front of the Chowk sculpture is, its called a rickshaw. Used for paid navigation (like a taxi), but its basically a tricycle. I hate these on the roads.

The Road straight ahead

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0020.jpg

You can see the background of the huge Hospital behind the vehicles, who have stopped because my light was green and I was crossing the roundabout. We are turning right from where we came.

Main entrance to the Maharani Hospital

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0021.jpg

Named after the Queen of Bastar region. Always crowded. Also houses a Medical College (which we will see in the next pic). Basic facilities available. Critical patients are only given immediate medical treatment, before being referred to the bigger Raipur (5 hour drive from here) hospital. Yes it is sad. Still plenty of time before the medical facilities of this area develop enough. Has about 35 doctors - 15 of them specialists in their fields.

Medical College entrance

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0022.jpg

The gates are closed for the public. Only students, doctors and other faculty members are admitted. Very recent. Still needs to be developed a lot more.

The New Narendra Movie Theater

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0023.jpg

The biggest, most spacious and comfortable, fully central AC-powered theater in town. Runs the latest Bollywood and Hollywood blockbusters. Boasts of Dolby 5.1 Sorround Sound and Widescreen experience. Very nice leather seats, plenty of popcorn and Coke available. Always full, always noisy before the start of any film.

The City Ground

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0024.jpg

The pic doesn't do the ground justice. Partly covered by the stalls in front (and partly by my lack of skills as a photographer), its a huge open ground where many cricket tournaments are held. Children play in it all the time. During the month of October, an annual October-fest is held in the grounds where all the big companies in Jagdalpur put up their stalls for customers.

The road ahead

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0025.jpg

Crossing the city ground, headed towards Sanjay Market - the biggest open market of Jagdalpur.

The Sanjay Market Chowk

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0026.jpg

Road to the right leads towards the Dharampura area, where my colony is situated. Road straight ahead leads towards the west exit of the city. The market is on the immediate right.

Roundabout - the start of the journey home

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0027.jpg

Small roundabout which signals the start of the Dharampura road. The building on the left of the pic houses the office of the Congress (I), the ruling political party of India. We will head straight from here.

The Anupama Movie Theater

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0029.jpg

Another very wide and spacious theater. Although it doesn't boast of anything, its a very comfortable and nice place to watch a film. It is also in direct competition to the New Narendra Movie Theater seen earlier, and is easily the 2nd best theater in town.

Straight ahead

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0030.jpg

From the roundabout, the road takes a downward slope all the way to home. Dotted with shops and houses on both sides alike.

...and ahead!

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0031.jpg

Keep the cameras rolling!

The Balaji Temple

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/Image0033.jpg

The biggest temple in Jagdalpur, dedicated to the Lord Balaji. Funded entirely by the Balaji Foundation. Looks very rich and sophisticated from close quarters. Will take a pic from close of the temple soon.

WOW!...You have so many beautiful structures

If I took pictures of MY city, it would be so very boring, especially compared to YOURS

I'm serious, google Erlanger, Kentucky and take a tour down a few of our streets...So completely plain and ordinary...I guess the Turfway Park racetrack up the the street from our house is about the only interesting thing here (many celebrities head here for the Derby, and other 'important' horseracing events...lol, just saying that is funny)...And it's really not all that interesting to be honest

OH, but we DO have the smallest church in the world, it's in Ripley's...Look up Monte Casino Chapel in Northern Kentucky...It's in front of the entrance to Thomas Moore College, and it's within walking distance of my house...Umm, and we have the factory that makes Airheads and Mentos.....Uh, yeah...That's pretty much all we've got :p

The Monte Casino chapel measures six by nine feet. Built in 1878 at a nearby monastery by Benedictine monks,it was named in 1922 by Ripley's Believe It of Not as "Smallest Church in the World." The monks subsequently left the area, in 1965 it was moved to the Thomas More College campus and restored.

We have nothing like what you have, V...Thanks for sharing, it's like traveling to other parts of the world :)

You can say that. The 15 houses in our colony are pretty similar in appearance - 8 on the left (including our home, called the West side) have the same design and are photocopies of each other, so are the 7 on the right (called the East side). The last plot is empty, and reserved for a future park or possible temple.

The main gate is closed at 12 PM. We have 3 colony guards who stand guard throughout the night. Water supply is also shared. All payments are done through our colony's society, made up of members from every home.

And, I d love to pay the world's smallest church a visit someday, if I can. :)

Water has receded slightly but not much. The floods poured into our homes from this morning and still haven't relented. Half of the city is under water right now. If the situation doesn't improve till evening, we will be moving out to a safer and drier place, temporarily.

Pics have been taken by my Samsung Monte.

Floods have receded slowly but not fully. We are back home today and busy with cleaning and such. Both my cars have water inside them. Rooms were immersed in ankle-deep water, which are being cleaned right now as I type this. The floods inside the colony have gone but the drains are still overflowing in many places. A lot of dirt and slippery mud has been left behind by the flood water.

In the city, some of the roads are filled with water and jammed on all sides. News has come in that the bridges leading to two adjoining states have gone underwater so we are cut off from the rest of the country for now. Thankfully cellphones, electricity and other essential things are working, except for fresh vegetables and food (for now).

I have become the proud owner of my own home! Finally!

The colony in which it is located...

The parking space good enough to park 2 cars...

Space for a small (future?) garden in front...

Entering the house, work progressing in full swing in the dining area right now...

Stairs leading up to 2 bedrooms above, a living hall in-between, and two open balconies on either side of the house... (pics of those to come)

Work in progress in the kitchen (Anya getting a modular kitchen made)...

The downstairs bedroom (space for the huge double bed!)...

View of the houses in front of our house (pic taken from the parking space)...

We had a short 3-day trip in-between for a medical check-up of Mother at the city of Vishakhapatnam (10 hour journey by train), and the view from the train during the whole journey was breathtaking!

First up, Mom and Anya inside the train cabin...

The lush green rice fields just outside our city as we head out...

From Mom's viewpoint...

Anya striking a pose in the cabin...

The fields slowly gave way to a breathtaking view of the countryside as we headed towards the mountains ahead...

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/19.jpg

And the train started its twisting and turning along the mountainous terrain (check the sheer drop on the left)...

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/21.jpg

Turning as the train crossed an unprotected bridge...

Turn, turn, turn...

View of a mountain river in the distance...

The river cutting through the mountains (barely visible as a stretch)...

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/26.jpg

Finally, the river broadening out into a huge body of water on the left...

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/27.jpg

Mom on the journey back home...

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/28.jpg

I missed out on many other great scenery shots during this journey - the train entering a stretch of caves cut through mountains (!), and so many tunnels on the way (I counted about 60), monkeys in the railway stations in between, rocks made from sheer marble, long mountain shots from the distance...maybe next time.

And to wrap up, the rangoli Anya made this Diwali...

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/13Ran.jpg

A very humble effort, compared to the ones she has done before. Anyway, it still looks pretty decent.

Until the next time! Ciao!

Hey, I forgot about this thread. Any chance of getting a picture of Anya's baby bump? Or maybe an ultrasound pic?

Yes, we like babies.:p I hope your wife is feeling okay. Being pregnant is pretty exhausting sometimes.
