I dont know, maybe its just me. But all these subgenres of metal are getting to me. Ive actually tried being open minded and listening to them. Acts like Dillenger Escape Plan and the like. But it all gets old to me.
I mean tremelo picking your way through an entire song isnt hardcore, its monotonous. And im all for a good hardcore scream to enhance a song (i.e. Phill from Pantera), but doing it on EVERY song on EVERY lyric just gets old and tired.
I enjoy death/black metal 100x more than these new subgenres of so called "Hardcore". It just doesnt do anything for me at ALL. Any other opinions?

It's dumb. Most of the time the name sounds really fucking stupid (Splattercore?! Horrorcore?!), and the band usually sucks ass anyways, so they usually try to cover it by saying that the people who don't like it "Can't handle it" or "Don't get/understand it".

Agreed. These people cant just make music and let their own band define it, they have to make up stupid little genres to cover the fact that the music is tired and uninspired. Im overgeneralizing, but not THAT much.

does your band have a web site?
Arioch
03-28-2004, 05:03 PM
Well our old Band does, but its a pretty weak site and that band is no longer together. Ill give you the link tho so you can check it out.
Im in the process of buying Longinus.com or Longinus.net, and getting a REAL site going, but i gotta come up with a bit more cash first. Ill put you on our mailing list so you can be updated when the new songs come out though.
Heres a link to the old site, theres not much there but you can get some lyrics and pics of some live shows.

Ya i was thinkin about that, but i really hate all the adds you gotta deal with when using the free sites like that. Plus you usually have to get a pretty shitty URL. I figure its probably gonna be worth the money to have one like Longinus.com/net/org or the like. But time will tell.

Pig Destroyer has some kickass lyrics...It's just a shame that you can't hear any of them over the growling/screaming...and the shitty banging/"music"

Agreed. Good lyrics, and some good guitar riffs, (at times) but it really leaves alot to be desired in terms of execution. Its a shame really.

Hardcore is not grindcore and hardly metalcore. I like grindcore and metalcore and hardcore.
I like the screaming and hardcore dancing is just FUN.
What do you consider to be any of these genres, by the way? (Hey, I like Dillinger Escape Plan!)

I'm a huge fan of grindcore... Cannibal Corpse, Cephalic Carnage, Anal Cunt, Anal Blast, Vomitorial Corpulence, The Berzerker, Mortician, Holocausto Canibal, Frightmare and tons more... I think anyone who takes the genre seriously needs to lighten up a bit. For many artists, it's a parody of death/black metal, and that's why it's layered in gimmicks.
Although if you do like it... www.mp3.com.au/kerbstomper has some of my world famous grindcore. Labelled "the worst shit in the world" by two members of this forums...

Well i used to be in a grindcore band before I joined the Army, I won't lie we were the typical Grindcore band, mostly, 30-60 second songs, My Band was called "Abortion With a Coat Hanger"
But i love grindcore and Hardcore, To me it just sounds sick, and after listening to it for a long enough time you start to actually understand what they are saying,
But i ain't gonna lie when i would play a show alot of the time i was so drunk i would forget my own lyrics so i would just growl and bark and make noise in the Mic
I think one of my Fav grind bands gotta be Charles Bronson, i think there mad good, and Hardcore bands it hard to say what my fav is specially since there is really no more "Hardcore" bands, shit most bands that people call Hardcore admit, there just plain old metal bands, Hardocre was just what people used to call Punk before they really knew what Punk was, Look at Bands Like DK, thats what people used to call Hardcore

. . . I love you! *kiss!*
Hardcore was derived of punk. It was 30 seconds to maybe even a minute sick, hard music, generally politically driven. It was not punk or the most part. Most of the "hardcore" bands around that are considered hardcore are just so NOT--they're more metalcore or black metal.

I was under the impression that Cannibal Corpse was death metal. Since they have been around WAY before any of the -core subgenres came out, and they actually have some melodic guitar parts...

Hardcore's been around since the 80's, which is not before Cannibal Corpse . . .as for the rest of it, I don't know. I do know that Cannibal Corpse is grindcore, probably one of the best known grindcore bands around.
Woo, I remember the first time I heard them. It's rather sweet, actually. I was in eight grade and absolutely adored this one boy and one day we were all sitting in a circle listening to music and he's like, "hey, what are you listening to?" and I'm all like, "60's hippie music!" and he's like, "Listen to this," and I did and his headphones smelt like him and at first I was like, "Oh wow, this is great," just to impress him . . . but after five minutes, I actually listened and really meant it when said, "This *really* is great!"
Ahh, such sweet music to bond to! I credit him for my interest in hard music.
Thank you, Jonathan, where ever you are.

Im sorry but if you compare C.C. to the likes of Pig Destroyer, Dillenger Escape Plan, and the like, there are FAR too many dissimilarites. When compared to death metal, and other such metals, cannibal corpse falls much further on that side. Growling vs. yelling, guitar metal solos vs. "grinding" riffs, even the drumming.
I cant see how you would call Cannibal Corpse grindcore, thats like calling Morbid Angel grindcore, or Six Feet Under, i believe the genre's are different. Just MHO.

I fucking LOVE Pantera, its really a shame that they wont be making in more music for a while, or ever. Songs like "Im broken", "5 Minutes Alone", "10's", "Cemetary Gates", "Planet Caravan (cover)", "Floods", along with EVERYTHING off the Great Southern Trendkill album, still fucking amaze me.
It really sadens me that we lost such a great and talented metal artist. Along with this, they are from Dallas, VERY close to where im from, and i have played shows at THE VERY CLUB they were discovered at, it really makes me sad:(

Agreed and agreed. My band is mostly hardcore punk with some elements of grindcore and doom thrown in here and there.
Are there any other hardcore punk bands around that have horror-tinged lyrics?

Metal is just that metal and hardcore is just hoped up punk rock, lets not confuse the two styles very different I started out with hardcore, Judge, Youth of Today, Leeway, Killingtime aka Raw Deal, Sick of it All, Minor Threat, Gorillia Biscuits, Underdog, Poison Idea, No for an Answer to name but a few. Metal has a few different genres but it's bottom line still metal, most of it has been done before and was done better then. Death metal: Chuck Schuldiner's Death, Obituary, Early 90's Napalm Death, Morbid Angels' first two offreings great stuff obviously I'm leaving alot out Grindcore How could anyone think of grind with out thinking about Suffocation The Human Waste Ep. is the Shit. The whole point of this is that this new stuff is just the old re-hashed and usually not as good or just really generic and so bland, I'll always explore new things in music but, Korn come on man the guitar sound has been done and done better, pre-packaged viacom garbage. main stream kids have no idea how many basement shows have you been to, do you support your local scene man I gotta go to Toronto if I want to see anthing decent.

I agree with your taste in music Thor I listened to a lot of those bands you mentioned back in the day. I loved Sick Of It Alls Blood Sweat and No Tears album, fucking wore it out. Agnostic front also. Obituary, Death and I absolutely loved Harmony Corruption by Napalm Death wore that fucker out also. Their Utopia Banished album was good to. Nowadays the stuff I like is
Pro-Pain of course and Skinlab, Pissing Razors, Eyehategod, Crowbar, Diesel Machine, Diecast and shit like that.
Also I just listen to plain old heavy shit, no labels just heavy.
Man I don't know how I could have forgotten to mention Agnostic Front "Cause for Alarm" "Victim in Pain" Liberty and Justice for..."
Man that was geat stuff back then and now. I vividly remember seeing AF at the Skyroom on Seneca St. in Buffalo, Ny. The year was 1991 it was January 5th. The bill was Agnostic Front, Sick of it All, Biohazard, Zero Tolerance, and No Joke. Under the title "The Superbowl of Hardcore" Shit too bad it's not like that anymore it's just a bunch of dumb kids football moshing and trying to hurt each other, speaking of which two weeks ago I went to a show and this kid was doing that late 90's style kickboxing he hit me so I took it upon myself to kick him back he stated "If you're going to be up front be prepared to be hit." I replied "If you hit me I feel obligated to hit you back." and it ended with that, but I just think kids just don't get it, it was about going out and having a good time. If someone next to you fell down while dancing you made an attempt to pick them up so they didn't get trampled, that no longer happens either. It sucks that things have degenerated into what we have now. No one has any identity, the few kids that I hung out with in high school that listened to hardcore still do and I still hang with them today we're more like brothers than anything, of course we're all into metal, and were then. Anthrax was always big on my list their "Among the Living" album was is classic lets see, man there's just so much, Thrash Metal Oh Man, Vio-lence "Eternal Nightmare" and Oppressing the Masses" just some plain old fasioned metal man I'm a Dio fan whether it be Blackmores' Rainbow or Dio era Black Sabbath or his solo stuff granted he's not as good as he was when he started but it's still Dio Slayers' "South of Heaven" "Reign in Blood" is possibly the best record ever produced well this is turning into a book so that's it for now.

I grew up with Reign in Blood, south of heaven was pretty good to, but Reign in blood (especially "dead skin mask") was the only slayer that really rocked my socks...

Damn Thor I thought I was one of the only ones that listened to Vio-lence! Also Forbidden, Death Angel, Coroner, Heathen, Testament, Biohazard ( one of my faves) Exodus, Seputura, Nuclear Assault, Overkill ( another fav still to this day I listen to Horrorscope alot. I just can never seem to get enough of that album) Kreator, Suicidal Tendencies, and Anthrax another fav, I love the Among The Living album also.
Yeah Death Angel "The Ultra Violence" man totally awesome Testaments' "Pratice What You Preach" Coroners' "RIP" Biohazzard I only liked the first lp. and "Urban Discipline" Exodus "Bonded by Blood" I don't know if it gets any better. Hmm Sepultura let see how about "Arise" or "Beneath the Remains". Nuclear Assult "Survive" "Game Over" "Handle With Care", Overkill " I Hear Black" "Horrorscope" both greats. Kreators' "Flag of Hate" "Terrible Certainty" "Endless Pain" Suicidal Tendencies "Lights, Camera, Revolution" my personal favorite although How "Will I Laugh Tomorrow" has it's strong points as does "Feel Like Shit Deja Vu" What about Sacred Reich "Ignorance" "Surf Nicaragua"Ep. DRIs' "4 of a Kind" and "Thrash Zone" Manowar lets see I think they say "if your not a friend of metal you're no friend of mine" awesome...

I listen to Victim In Pain/Cause For Alarm/Urban Discipline/Beneath The Remains/Chaos A.D/The Bleeding/Vulgar Display a lot.
Labels are bullshit really. Straight up honest heavy music is somthing that has always appealed to me. Didn't see Assuck mentioned tho.... amazing shit that everyone should be blasting real fuckin' loud while real fucking wasted.
Whatever happened to that Arioch kid? :)

Mmmm... necromancy...
Anyway, I think that metalcore is terrible, and grind is mostly so, but there are quite a few notable exceptions, such as:
Pig Destroyer (Absolutely brilliant lyrics. Probably the best grind band around.)
Man is the Bastard (Two basses, no guitar, and drums. Unique stuff.)
Agathocles
His Hero is Gone
Bolt Thrower (Gone death metal now, but the early records are great, especially if you happen to be a Warhammer 40k geek like yours truly.)
Extreme Noise Terror
And of course, the immortal Anal Cunt. How can you argue with songs like "I Snuck a Retard Into a Sperm Bank"?
