Anyone have any depictions of what Hell is like? I had a fucked up dream last night that got me thinking about it. How do you picture it?

Damnation is not a place but a soulstate. There is nobody who wrongs another humanbeing without suffering and nothing can ever be empty. When people become empty, they become filled instead with perpetual suffering that they can't even feel. This is the state of damnation. If a person were to die in a state where the soul was fractured and would need repair, then the soul would do something to help get fixed, mainly penance of some kind. People think the concept of Hell is about punishment. It's not about vengeance, it's about justice. When Dante first reaches the Inferno, the sign above it says the maker was "moved by justice". All things aspire toward their true nature, which in the long run, is a state of mercy and understanding. The road to this place is jagged and dangerous for the living and might be that way too for the dead. Seems logical to me. But I don't think homosexuality, living with your girlfriend, eating meat or praying to anything would get you there unless those things were so against your true nature, so against the path to peace that they are crimes against your nature. If you're dreaming about Hell think about what you've done that you would perceive a crime against your nature and the people around you. A dream of Hell means somehow you're already in a little bit of suffering and feeling damnation. It happens to everyone, usually manifested as simple guilt or more complex remorse and contrition.

So, in lament's terms, you think that hell is a mental state that can be inhabited while living on earth?

I don't know what it is, but I hope it doesn't exist because if it does I'll surely be sent there when I die for watching pirated videos online.
And Posher, yes, I think Doc's theory is that it's a state of mind. Basically the mental anguish we inflict on ourselves when we've wronged another person.

I don't know about that, there are people who derive pleasure from hurting other people and it seems like they've been that way since birth. I think it's nothing personally. Many people who don't believe in any afterlife think that they simply cease to exist and that's what I feel Hell is... you simply do not move on.
