I've recently had the pleasure of watching some Italian horror.

Zombie, The Beyond and Demons etc.

I was wondering what other films by Lucio Fulci and Dario Argenta are good watching?

Your advice is appreciated.

Not Argento or Fulci, but check out twitch of the death nerve by Mario Bava. Kind of the grand daddy to the slasher films

I strongly suggest The New York Ripper, and suspiria

There's also The Gates Of Hell by Fulci.

And by Argento: Suspiria, Phenomena, Tenebrae, and Inferno are my favorites.

Actualy, my favorite Fulci film is The House by The Cemetary. I first seen it when I was about 12. Nice and bloody. It just popped in my head last night and I searched for it on Netflix and there it was!!! Needless to say, I put it on my rental list. So, I recomend it

Well, since I haven't seen it in over ten years, I can't remember all of it, but the scene which sticks out in my mind is where this old woman goes into the people's house who have the monster in the basement, they are not home, but the monster is and he takes something which looked like a fire poker and first stabbed her in the belly, then the chest which made a terrible cracking noise and then in the neck which hit the juggular vein and blood started squirting everywhere. Anyway, I thought it was pretty bloody back then.

OMG - Burial Ground is an Amazing piece of .....work ;) i knew this movie was going to be good when i saw that the actor who played the 13 - 14 year old son of a groping couple was ( im almost 100% on this ) a midget actor - who actually looked older than his "mom" - truely a " leave your brain at the door " kinda movie ;) - btw Zombie Holocaust is still a blast to watch !!

I watched House by the Cemetery last night, which I haven't seen in a LOOONG time. Needless to say, it was one of the few movies which is even BETTER than I remembered it!!! And that rarely happens. Most of the time, movies which I once idolized when I was a kid, hold little charms for me as an adult. This IS NOT one of those movies. OMG I got so nauseated while watching it, I could not even finish my slice of Domino's pizza which I ordered just for the occasion. My rugrat's appetite seemed unaffected by the gore, no surprise.

Oh contraire, Phenomena is one of Argento's very best films. And where the hell did you get this DVD for 3 bucks?! Is it the Anchor Bay one? I shelled out $26 for that thing, and it always skipped and paused frequently during the ending. Thankfully, I acquired myself another copy of the film 110 uncut on VHS- so I can watch it as many times as I want without damn freezing.

Mario Bava was the original master of Italian horror, he made two really EXCELLENT films- Black Sunday and Twitch of the Death Nerve. Most of his other films were decent, but the man wasn't immune to flops. Blood and Black Lace is overrated.

Lucio Fulci is a hack- was a hack- is a hack. My opinions on him are very well versed and well known. And quite controversial, to my surprise. I wasn't aware that to be a horror fan, I had to be a robot and like everything certain people tell me to. That's the way it's been on other boards...

The Beyond and Don't Torture a Duckling weren't terrible films- but pretty much everything else he touched was. The New York Ripper is a dispicable, miserable excuse for a movie. It's gore was used to cover up the fact that the movie is blatantly misogynistic, and disgusting at that. But since I haven't had any luck so far in appealing to the intelligence of Fulci fans, I digress. Zombie is hugely overrated.

I know that there is a real scale of badness, that it's often an abstract concept. And I know the difference between good-bad and bad-bad. And Fulci was just bad-bad-bad...

Dario Argento on the other hand has been the most consistent, innovative, brilliant, and ambitious of the 3. Even his lowest film, by any standard, would be fascinating!

phenomena is one of his best? i must have been watching his films wrong then... Yes many fans dispute this, but some are smart enough to see the obvious talent and energy and care that went into Phenomena. What bugs me the most is how people complain about the metal soundtrack. Yet, they don't seem to mind Opera much... I ignore the music unless it really adds or detracts from the film. And Phenomena's soundtrack was touching when it needed to be, and irreverent when it was appropriate.

Many of the set-pieces involve the actual plot and characters of the movie. This is not always typical for Argento, and thus many fans aren't used to it. But if you appreciate Argento at all, you give him the space to try something different. And Phenomena is fascinating, compelling, bizzare, and beautiful. It aspired to be something more than most of Argento's films. And as an experiment, this worked out much better than many of Argento's films that just retread his giallo formula. The result is very worthwhile.

Also, very happy to hear about your DVD. Is it in good shape, quality-wise?

well as i giallo fan, i admit i find his early films a real treat. phenomena is a good film, not his best but certainly not his worst (phantom of the opera gets that "honour")
