View Full Version : HDC Weekly Debate - Do we have had enough of tournaments?

Well?
I have been getting plenty of PMs to get another tourney up and running now that the Male Villains one is drawing to a close.
(Angra still wants me to do the HDC Tournament, which I have been avoiding purposefully...lest it might start some sort of flaming and favoritism war, which is the last thing HDC would want right now)
But of late I have noticed that voting has slowed down, especially after the spammers started targetting HDC since mid-October, and members got very busy with pre-Christmas stuff.
Of course it helps in maintaining the traffic around these parts, but then again we have had so many till now that maybe HDC members have reached the saturation point as far as tourneys are concerned.
So...have your say.

I'm neither saying yes or no.
But the tourney sure could need some new installments.
I still say a HDC Members tourney (No newb... don't think it) would be kick ass. Much more personal and therefore also much more interesting and FUN!!
You could also think about the structure of the tourney. See if you could change some of it, to make the game varie. But all of that doesn't matter if the category isn't particularly interesting.
To me the best tourneys has been the Actors Tourney and the Actress Tourney, coz this was real people we voted for. Real Hollywood people, but nevertheless..

No- I see no reason to stop. I like them. They're fun, they're quick no-brainers, and they keep this place together.
If you don't want to vote in them, then move on to the next thread. It isn't as if they're blockading everything else, and many times they're actually the most interesting thing going on here.
I say keep 'em coming Avi.

Yeah. Too much of anything runs it into the ground.
(Ask Cobain about Heroin, his answer will be similar)

You think Cobain will answer?

Hmm...changing the format/structure...I think I MIGHT have some ideas to tweak that.
So, other than a possible HDC Members tourney, what other ideas do you have for possible new(er) installments?
No- I see no reason to stop. I like them. They're fun, they're quick no-brainers, and they keep this place together.

Thanks, Kev. But I am really open to opinions/suggestions here. If the majority say no, then no will prevail.
Yeah. Too much of anything runs it into the ground.

True. And I am having second thoughts about them too.
You think Cobain will answer?
Well, if you ask his ardent followers, they ll reply "If only you asked hard enough..." ;)
So far, 1 in favor, 1 against, and 1 undecided. Can we have some more opinions on this please?

None. None whatsoever. :)

I say keep bringing them. At times this place is totally dead, and the tournaments at least spark some life into the General Forum and keep it moving along.
Without them half the threads would be full of pics, and the other half full of attempts at smartassy posts and similar replies. Next stop, if that actually happens, would be jumping ship.

I'm in favor of small games, though maybe the next tournament could wait a little. Perhaps some sort of HDC game caucus is in order.

Who better to voice their opinions on this topic than the voters themselves?
Noted all points laid down so far. I await to hear what the rest have to say.

I vote we all shut up and play Rock Band at Posher's house. I have sparkling grape juice and Grey Goose!

The tournaments are fun. I just wish that they sparked a bit more discussion as opposed to people making one-off answers. I wish that people were encouraged to talk about why they would make their vote over someone else. Or maybe it's not about encouragement; maybe people are too lazy to think of a creative reason as to why they're making the vote? Maybe people need to DEFEND their vote in order for it to count - LOL. Then again, people probably wouldn't vote at all if that's the case (ahhh, pessimistic Chrono coming out).
It could lead into some fun, silly, and imaginative discussions, though.
I.E. I vote Count Dracula over Norman Bates because Dracula is more iconic a figure in the annuls of horror. Not to mention, he would TOTALLY kick that mamma's boy's ass. hahaha

The tournaments and the stickys were what made me join this forum in the first place. Chronogrl's suggestion sounds awesome. It could liven things up a lot when voting is going on. P.S., I voted for Angel Eyes because he could kick the shit out of that whiny pretentious mamma's boy any day of the week. :D

I love the tournaments and hope that we keep having them.

I have had some very spirited discussions within the tournaments.

The tournaments fucking rule. It brings the old-school and younger posters together and gives us something we can all openly participate in.
Everyone that votes obviously enjoys them. If someone is tired of them, well don't fucking bother looking at them and start your own god damn thread. Sorry for ranting. :D

I'm all for keeping them coming - just as long as you aren't getting tired of running 'em. I know they can get tedious and boring to run after awhile - I never did finish my animation tournament - but from a voters point of view, they're one of the big things that make me sign in as often as I do.
Keep them coming!

Okay, but the newer tourneys from now on will have a slightly tweaked format.
Looks like 1-on-1 has finally been done to death (the same as is the normal pattern of advancing), so expect a few surprises from the next tourney onwards (ala Battle Royale II). ;)
Oops...did I mention BR II? Errr...

I think it would be fun to go Apples to Apples style. Everyone argues for their choice, and the best argument advances the choice to the next round. It would take some serious doing, but if you worked it out it could be extremely fun.

When the dead horse is ground to powder, it's time to slow it some...I mean it's been all good lately and even I don't mind seeing 'em here'n there whether or not I participate, but come a while ago it was like major sequelitis, and heading for the "in space" episode.
One doesn't have to follow on more or less directly from the other, yknow...I think it works better if this isn't the case.

I've run one and a half tourneys (I'll get the super villains one up soon. I was waiting until the hype behind the dark knight faded), and a LOT of work goes into them. I had a list on my desk with weird markings next to each name and crossings out, tallies and more. I'm sure V has a more organised way of doing it. Plus there's the uploading of pictures which just takes time, and then as more rounds come along, you have to search your Photobucket for them. I think it's great you do them V, and we all appreciate it. I vote in them less now simply because I spend less time here on HDC (I don't know why). If you can keep on top of doing them, you should keep doing them!
