Exorcist, definately. If i was told i couldnt use that one, then the Shining. I love the ring, but it wasnt quite the masterpiece someof the older ones were.

But i do love the ring.

I'm going to get crucified for this, but the remake. I was bored senseless by the original. And i usually hate remakes.

left hand, please... WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM.

right hand, please. WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM.

just kidding.

The single greatest horror film is Texas Chainsaw Massacre. 1974 version, duh.

I would give the Shining a close second but the fact that it probably cost 100 times what TCM did makes TCM the worthy underdog.

It's difficult, but overall I'd have to say Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It didn't rely on "jump" scenes or the dark or a manipulative soundtrack... instead it was simple, minimilistic, and highly disturbing in the fact that this *could* happen (versus the immortal killer, possessed doll, ect...).

I wouldn't go quite so far as to say it's my absolute #1 favorite, but it's pretty much got all the ingredients of what I would truly consider "horrific".

Exorcist hands down.... what the hell is not scarey about seein your kid walk down the steps upside down on all fours. And as bad as pea soup is, to make it look that good is priceless

I liekd the remake but it just wasn't scary or even creepy. And the ending was so Hollywood I think I even laughed. Loved the addition of the Horse scene on the ferry though that was great.

NOTLD, it pushed the envelope of what you can show in terms of gore and nudity. ( one zombie was nude from behind. Tame now but racy by 60's standards) Really opened the door for films like Friday13th, noes, and the likes

The Exorcist and NOTLD ...however NOES1 follows really close behind.

Dr.Kelvinstein
03-02-2004, 12:58 PM
There are a few films that are simply as good as a horror movie can be...Halloween, TCM, NOTLD, and Psycho.

The Wolf Man is probably the best monster movie of all time.

Darth Bane
03-03-2004, 06:44 AM
Cannibal Holocaust, Blood Sucking Freaks, ONLY the beginning scenes of Last House on the Left, and I Spit on your Grave. Any movie that demoralizes women gets my vote.

I guess I am alone here, but JAWS is the best MOVIE ever not just horror movie.

2nd would be Halloween II.

KRUGERKID13

Hellraiser 1
NOES 1
Gingersnaps (best wolf movie)
Sleepaway Camp 1 & 3

Mercury33
03-04-2004, 07:31 AM
My all time favorite would have to be Halloween followed very closely by Evil Dead 2 and The Exorcist.

my favorate is halloween and i strongly believe that it is the best horror movie of all time but i'll have to say it's a tie between halloween and the shining because halloween is the original slasher it had the soundtrack, the classic pov shots that you had'nt really seen before, and the Dr. Loomis charactor is just great. on the other hand you have the shining which also had a great soundtrack and a script adapted from stephen king is always going to be good, the amazing acting from Jack Nicholson and who can forget that classic line which i've used for my signature. these are two classic horror films that i believe are tied at the top of the list of course with texas chainsaw massacre a extremely close second.

William Peter Blatty's original Novel, inspired by true events in 1949, I have read twice. He wrote the screenplay that William Peterson directed and fought with him so much about. Well, whatever cut you see, although Mr. Blatty's adds much cohesiveness, it is the apex in film of philosophical doubt. For that is really what The Exorcist was about, having doubts about one's religion, doubting one's own faith! It is not really a horror movie or Novel, it is much more intellectual than that. :)
