It's a time period in america, a style of art. You're in school right?
Don't worry, you'll get there.

That's commercial gothic, more of a sterotypical definition if you ask me.

I don't put a label(s) on a 'state of mind'.
It's too categorizing. That's why there are so many stereotypes.

Second page (http://maddox.xmission.com/gothagain.html)

gothics are girls and guys that show how badass and depressed they are by spending hours in front of the mirror doing their hair, make up and painting their nails every week... if thats what it takes to be badass i must be the fuckin goddess of bad assedness

gothic... germans, good old knights, swords...
the first words that pop into my mind.
altso its a clothing style similar to my own, black clothes, makeup, blood, rings and jewels are a necesity, often associated with people who listen to gothic/metal.

Well I have known goths.. And Gore was pretty close with his description.
It's a time period, not people who wear black, pins, and listen to heavy metal.
I believe those people are called outcasts.
Try to get a job with your normal gothic garb at a respectable company. Good luck. I don't know too many places that will hire people that paint their fingernails black, wear jewelry up the wazoo, have a bunch of piercings, and wear pins all over their clothes. Usually you have to wear a suit and look decent.

...? Then how about you just not look stupid in the first place, and dress decent everyday?
Give it up, dressing in all black, having blood on you, and painting your face white doesn't do anything. "But I'm expressing myself!!" No, you just look like a loner.

do you hear me talking down on normal people all the time? no you dont, because thats discrimination, you cant vew it from a stereotypical point of view, specialy when all you know are posers.
why should we all dress the same? why should we all think the same way? why should we listen to the same music and hang out around the same places? is that realy what you want? what diversity would there be on this plannet without the darker crowds of people. we may be few, but lets face it, we make you guys look a lot more normal.

Moonsorrow, you don't talk down normal people, because that's precisely what they are. And how do you know what kind of gothics I know? You're being stereotypical by saying "oh, that person isn't a real gothic." Who are you to judge what a real gothic entails?
That's much like what Hitler did when he exterminated people. Your hair isn't blonde enough, your eyes not blue enough. They were then killed.
I'm not saying you have to look the same, listen to the same music, hang out at the same places. But do you have to do it looking like that? There's a reason why gothics are outcasts, and why they are the few.
I listen to heavy metal, but do I dress that way? No, I wear khakis and collared shirts. Does that mean I'm not being an individual...? Uh..? And metal isn't the only music I listen to. I listen to a diverse selection.. Why are you limited to listening to such angry music?
Ok, and you tell me something. Did Picasso dress in all black? Did Da Vinci? Galileo? Or artists of today? Are you saying they're not expressing individuality, even though they are very individual? Give me a break. You act like dressing like that is the only way to express yourself.. That's very closed.
And it's like Fluff said, it's in your mind. Just because you may dress in the same fashion as everyone else doesn't mean you're a conformist.

If individuality is so many things, leave the appearance alone, and pick something else. Or is that too difficult?
And you've been offered a modeling job in a... gothic calendar? Gothic. There's a reason why mainsteam hasn't offered you a job yet.

i really dont care how anyone dresses. hell, im asian. in a sea of asians. but i stand out. i went to a school with fuckin 52% asian.. and I stood out.. thats because i 'dont dress like typical asians' and when i look, its true. they dress a way, i dress a way, goths do a certain way, mormons....
the only problem i have, is when peope whine about how they cant get ajob and how im supposed to feel sory for them.
take 2 people up for a job, lets say a pretty big one, manager. both have Masters degrees. one a goth, one clean cut in a suit. who's gonna get the job?
i miust ask.. is vanity a trait of goths? cuz see i slap on whatever and get on with my day. i do not wear make up, i run a brush through my hair a couple times. thats it. i guess thats another prob i have with goths, girls too. i have a hard time hangin out with people so vain

so manny fronts to fight and so tierd... there are a number of black metal clubs where i live, elm street, møllers, and rockin for example, im a big customer in all those places... i can honestley say i never seen a fight happen around there... now take all the other places to go to for the normal people... the metro, turbulence, terra...etc, there is always a fight outside one of those places, ALWAYS, and they are all you. altso you are the ones who bully kids around in school. you are the ones who make sure "nerds" and "loosers" have a hard time at school just because they think, dress speak or act diffrentley. im not saying this aplys to you as a person but as whole so to speak. youl never see me or any of my darker friends start picking on some poor kid with an out of fassion pair of pants, youl see us coming to lend him a hand.
there are only 2 kinds of goths that wear pins, the posers and the non existent.
again i ask...why is it so god damn hard to accept that we look like this? is my corpse pain in some way reflecting of the street light and blurring your vission? do the chains strapped around me rattle so loud you cant hear? what is so difficult to accept?
and there you go acusing metal of being such angry music, heart of steel, us, rite of passage ...i could go on forever, songs so beautifull my dead eyes almost water when i hear them.
discriminating again...shame.
any metalhead/goth/svartmetaller with style can apreciate the ocasional mozart, bach or some luigi manlio
its not the only way of expressing myself, its done in so many ways you cant even immagine. all those above expressed themselves, does that mean i have to go pain the ceeling of a chappel before you look at me as a real human being of flesh blood and normal human emotions?

why do you keep saying i beat up people? i never made a generalization about YOU. all i said was that too many of them have whined about not getting a job
have i ever beat anyone up? no. like i said, i have all kinds of friends, and work with all kinds of people. i've worked with people with SEVERE social anxiety, people who couldnt even get out to get the mail they were so scared. I went to class with a girl with hip dysplasic, i pulled her roller backpack for her. one of my best friends doesnt shave her legs, and has ashy skin. so stop assuming that i hate on people based on looks
maybe not others, but myself like i said, i dont care how anyone looks. it just bothers me that the SAME people who always whine about not being offered a job (other than bagging groceries, but even then they usually dont get the job) still would rather wear their make up and blood than to make a living.
i really dont care how people look. but if i owned a company, would i hire someone like that? depends.. maybe if i was runing a goth music store. but if i were running a bakery perhaps? most likely no. a law firm? HELL No. imagine going to the hospital and your doctor has on white make up and black liptstick.. or your dentist

hey im new to the boards but i just wanted to give my opinion. Moonsorrow seems to be in this fight alone so here comes a little help. (if ya want it) Im not gothic. But I like the style. It has nothing to do with vanity because i wear alot of different clothes but gothic is my favorite clothes. Im not trying to put anyone down because i wear what makes me comfortable. I dont complain about anything to any one who dosent want to hear it. My friends and I whine about typical stuff, but i want someone to be completely honest and say they have never been whiney about one thing in their lives? Any one? The point is, everyone is an idividual, but why do people who choose to dress in clothing and have mindsets unapproved of always end up getting singled out? They say "freak" "goth" "slut" whatever. I could care less because its just labels. Pink hair is fine if thats what you like. Black makeup and blood is fine if thats what you like. I like a little bit of everything and I could care less what other people would like to think.
So before i fall asleep at the computer, cant we just be more tolerant of other peoples choices? Does it really have an affect on out lives anyway?

"It has nothing to do with vanity because i wear alot of different clothes but gothic is my favorite clothes."
dictionary.com
vanity:
The quality or condition of being vain.
Excessive pride in one's appearance or accomplishments; conceit. See Synonyms at conceit.
Lack of usefulness, worth, or effect; worthlessness.
Something that is vain, futile, or worthless.
Something about which one is vain or conceited.
A vanity case.
See dressing table.
A bathroom cabinet that encloses a basin and its water lines and drain, usually furnished with shelves and drawers underneath for storage of toiletries.
anyway. i said like 5 times already that i dont care how people dress. i just dont get how people will pick 'individuality' between having a job

I wear black because it happens to be my favorite color (actually, my daughter informs me that "black" is NOT a "color", but rather an absence of light in a spectrum, whatever:rolleyes: )
I like silver spikes and chains...as a "normal" person prefers gold rings and diamonds (a bit too showy for me, I'm really not into materialism, therefore I am not impressed with expensive jewelry and/or clothing)
I don't color or spike my hair...but, my daughter and her boyfriend do...Does that make us different types of people?...Hmmm...I don't think so
I paint my nails black and wear black lipstick when I feel like it, I'm not sure that has anything to do with the "type" of person I am...Maybe it simply signifies again that I like the 'color' black
I don't "whine", unless I don't get my way (but, I usually do get my way)...lol...I don't necessarily hate life, okay some days I do, but not all the time, I think that's true for most people though...If I do decide that my life sucks, I'll change it...Life is what WE make it...It isn't something that just happens to us
As for the job/appearance debate...Everyone I have ever known has had "work" clothes and a regular wardrobe...When I was younger my "work" attire consisted of jeans, t-shirt, workboots, hardhat, toolbelt and lanyard...I did not paint my nails or put on lipstick before I went to work...I also left my "regular" clothes at home...And I never wore my hardhat and workboots when I went out...lol...Now, on the flipside of this debate...The people that I know who wear suits and ties to work, do NOT wear them at home or when they go out...As a matter of fact, many of them wear whatever they like, also...Most of them wear black
You would be surprised how many of your "upstanding businessmen" are "freaks" and "goths" outside of the office *cough*Je Suis Phnomne*cough*
Am I considered "goth"?...Not by a longshot...I cannot be defined or labeled...I'm just me...I don't fit into any categories...and I don't try to...
As for attention seeking...If I needed or wanted attention, I might actually leave the house from time to time
As for "painting your face white"...I have no clue what that means:confused:...So, I can't comment
Basically...The way I choose to dress, act, look, and live are all a matter of personal preference...A choice that I make to please myself and no one else
BTW...Isn't being concerned with the way someone else looks or dresses, a form of vanity...being concerned more with what's on the outside of a person, rather than what's on the inside?
I honestly don't care how anyone dresses...Well okay, I can't stand to see girls, especially young girls, running around half naked in public...That's offensive, and it shows a lack of respect for themselves, that IS a reflection on what's on the inside...But, I keep it to myself and remain thankful that it isn't my daughter...
Would you consider my daughter and her boyfriend to be goth?...They don't fit most of your descriptions...They love life...They are very happy, well adjusted people...And they only "whine" when they don't get to see each other...which is often soon remedied...Her boyfriend, by the way, has been working consistently since he was 14...He's now 17 and has been unloading trucks for a living, at the same company for almost 2 years now...He lives on his own and pays his bills...He also buys his own eyeliner...lol...His eyebrow ring, earrings, and labrea (not sure how to spell that one) are removed for work and his long hair is pulled back...Perhaps people make assumptions about them based only on their appearance...But, they don't really give a damn either...
We know ourselves better than anyone else...The way we "see" ourselves is FAR more important than the way we are perceived by others...If people don't like us, they can stay away from us...If we don't like something about ourselves, we will change it...So, tell me...What do you think...Goth or not?.....

very well said bloodrayne.
as for the vanity issue i think everyone is a little bit vain. most people make sure their clothes match before they go out in public. we live in a society where everyone is trained to be vain. we are taught to care what others think about us. many people dont raise thier hand in classes as they get older becouse they are afraid of what athers are going to say if they dont get the answer correct. i dont think you can blame people for being like this because we were raised that way.
clothing style doesnt bother me. i say dress in whatever you are comfortable in. if you are comfortable in black then thats what you should wear. if you are comfortable in khakis and a collard shirt then more power to you. i wear all black because i feel "normal" in all black. my older sister is into the amican eagle type outfit. we would never be caught in eachothers style but that doesnt make eitherone of us better.
and for my final point about "goths" whine a lot. everyone also whines a lot. not to sound offensive but people are saying that goths whine about getting jobs. well as i read this forum it sounded to me that some were whining about other people whining so i guess now you dont have room to talk because you now whine like the rest.
have a wonderful day(whether you are goth or normal or whatever you prefer to be called because either way we are all the same)

ok i agree deathbyfire,it shouldnt matter what you wear, you are also right aboot everyone being brought up in a vain world, america is based on fashion and ppl being concerned with the way they look, their weight ect. i for one dont care what ppl think aboot me, i like to wear what i feel fit in, if someone doesnt like what im wearing then they can kiss my bum.
take my brother for example he listens to the casualties, misfits and w/e , he also dresses in "punk" clothes, and is always asking me for fashion advise, yet the only reason he does and of this is because everyone else is doing it! and thats not a good reason but he thinks its fine so more power to him w/e makes him HP.
now me on the onthe hand, i dress "punkesk" and i listen to the same bands, yet i've listened to them for years, before punk was cool again, and i also adore he underground scene, and listen to bands like bob marey and the wailers, the eagles, gordon goodwin(k/a jazzy/blues), and so on. yet im the odd one in my family and at school!? i also do poetry and art and drama so what would that fall in? i have no category, no place, exact name of friends. i literally lead the most perfect life i could imagine!!! i love not fitting in any particular group, and being friends w/ the cheerleaders and jocks and the punks and the goths and the strait edge ppl and the geeks and the nonpopular ones and the administration! it soooooo great!
ok im done!

I have a problem with the vain people in my family, judging me by what I like to wear.....My cousins won't talk to me...My aunt sneers at me...But, do you know what?..I'm gonna look the way I WANT to look. I don't care if others don't like it..because I do, I'm not going to change my style just because I'm "unpopular" because of it...the only people I WANT in my life are the ones who accept me for the way I am, and I love them for the way they are...

i agree with moonsorrow, how you dress doesn't determine who you truly are. just because i wear all black, doesn't mean i'm depressed and can't get a job.

i have relatives like yours too wicked lady. i don't get talked to at events w/ my moms family cuz i don't like sports and i am not married or do i have kids so they look at me as if i don't have anything to contribute but o well i'm me and i am not changing it for them. i also get looks from them and others when i do stuff different but i like it so i don't really care waht they think. my friends like my wierdness thats basically why they r my friends cuz i make them laugh w/ my weirdness:D i was called a prep in HS but i am far from that i wasn't waht the presp at my school were i was just basically myself wore what i want even if ppl did make fun of it and acted the way i wanted even if they thought i was weird. one thing i never liked abotu HS is how ppl would not like others cuz they were different. alot of ppl didn't like this one girl at school for waht i don't know and i as one of those till i actually got to know here better i thought that about alot of my friends i have noew till i got to know them better. one thing i hate is how my mom juidges ppl that r my friends or that i like b4 she even knowsa them. she alled my one friend a slut and shes not but my mom didn't even meet her or talk to her
