MTV is doing the time warp on a remake of 1975 cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
Lou Adler, exec producer of the original film, is partnering with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios on the new rendition.
Two-hour remake will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien but may also include music not featured in the original.
Helmer and casting decisions have yet to be announced.
Fox is in discussions with BSkyB and Sky Movies to co-finance and distribute the telepic abroad.
Timetable for the start of production hasn't been established yet but the partners aim to move forward quickly once the final elements are in place.
"I'd like to see it shown a year from this coming Halloween, but that's up to MTV," Adler said.
BermanBraun principal Gail Berman will exec produce the project along with partner Lloyd Braun. Berman has been attached to a "Rocky Horror" remake dating back to her tenure as Fox programming chief.
The original "Rocky Horror," starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf, has grossed $140 million in domestic box office over the years, primarily from the wallets of youthful audience members who have shown up for midnight screenings over the past three decades.

I wonder which "butthead" over at MTV had this "bright and original" idea.

the ironic thing is that the motivation for things like this is clearly greed, yet every project like this is doomed to do poorly at the box office.

I've said it a million times: if you have to remake movies, why not remake the bad ones that need it ? The worst part is no matter how much it will suck compared to the original (as most remakes do), people will still keep paying to see it based on the name all the while complaining that it sucks. People are stupid, corporations are greedy and it's all frustrating beyond belief.

So, I hear there's gonna be a remake of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Supposedly, Marilyn Manson is interested in the role of Dr. Franknfurter. Any details, opinions?
Manson would be a good choice.

Where did you hear this? People love attaching Marilyn Manson to projects in rumors. Manson as Frankenfurter is too obvious. He's too similar already. Hopefully, more clever casting will prevail.

With or without Marilyn Manson in this film, I don't think a remake of Rocky Horror should happen. A remake cannot and will definetly not be better than the original. Personally, I feel that people are getting way to f!@king lazy and remaking everything instead of coming up with original work. If you can't bring some original horror to the table, don't be in the movie business. This whole, 'Remake and re-imagine' shit is getting really sickening.

I think this is possibly the most cynical remake project ever, and here's why:
After reading the near universal condemnation of this project on website after website, I believe MTV knows this project is going to suck incredibly. They won't put any great effort into producing something that will be in the slightest bit creative or interesting- they'll just pack it full of current teen idols and make a bland tv movie out of it.
It will get a HUGE audience on initial showing because everyone who loves the original will tune in to see HOW BAD IT IS. They will enjoy the debacle and the feeling of "I knew it would be awful."
There will also be a sizable audience of teeny bopper fans of whatever pop stars they stuff into the roles, who have no idea what a special film the original is, and these fans will love it. THEY will buy enough of the dvds when it's released- along with the people who just buy everything- to make this a profitable venture.
The ads will go for a premium.

I was indifferent to a remake at first. Don't get me wrong; I LOVE RHPS... BUT seeing Marilyn Manson as Dr. Frankenfurter - That's ridiculously HOT.
HOWEVER, knowing that it's an MTV production is a complete and utter turn-off, for the reasons that NE cited.
Forget a RHPS remake; I want to see Repo! The Genetic Opera (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0963194/)!!!

The remakes have nothing to do with laziness or lack or original material.

Essentially MTV are going to be making High School Musical: The Goth Years. Total cash in, it'll suck but make big money.

I hope Manson has better judgment than this. Marilyn Manson as Marilyn Manson in the Marilyn Manson story in Mansonvision. Redundant. Why not remake Rebel Without a Cause With Nicholas Cage? Actors should not be allowed to play people they imitate for their whole lives.

I don't think Manson will be in it. Way too expensive for an MTV movie.

Still, I give this remake a resounding "Feh!" MTV ruined my teen years once and now they're doing it again.

I am generally in the minority of film snobbery in that a genuinely like re-makes. Obviosuly there are many more bad re-makes then good but some stories and themese deserve to be re-told and often the mark of "original" is highly over-rated. In fact original is now tending to become a kind euphamism for "just fucking weird".
I adore Rocky Horror, and I think it's charm is timeless I don't really think a re-make is a good idea. I am however willing to have my hopes dashed into a million pieces and give it the benefit of the doubt. I don't really think Manson is a good choice, irrespective of it's obvious nature many find him unnerving and eery. I just don't see him able to deliver the passionate and odd allure of Dr Frank.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is, by anyone’s estimation, a sensation.
The movie, which originally debuted in 1975 with Tim Curry playing everyone’s favourite sweet transsexual from Transylvania, Dr Frank-N-Furter, has gone on to make more than $100 million thanks to a long, healthy cult life in midnight screenings and eyeliner sales (okay, it’s more to do with the screenings).
So what is Fox 2000 looking to do? Remake it, of course!
And apparently, the company wants Ryan Murphy to come to the lab.
That Murphy’s being courted is not altogether surprising – he’s a big hit around the halls of Fox thanks to Glee and is an in-demand director. Plus, the musical series is about to air an episode packed with Rocky Horror songs for the week of Halloween, so he has some extra experience with them. And the tale of Brad, Janet and the rest has been threatened with reboots and sequels galore through the years.
While we’re not really sure Rocky Horror needs to be reanimated with a new cast and possibly a new take on the story, we’re sure Richard O’Brien wouldn’t mind the royalties that would roll in.
Still, while Deadline reports that Fox’s Peter Chernin is itching to get a new version of the movie in cinemas, Murphy’s plate is already fairly full between overseeing Glee, looking to start shooting AIDS drama The Normal Heart with Mark Ruffalo next spring and spending time developing a romantic comedy to work again with his Eat Pray Love star Julia Roberts.
The original Rocky Horror Picture Show, written by cast member Richard O'Brien and director Jim Sharman, launched Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick and had a cast that included O'Brien, Nell Campbell and Meat Loaf in a raucous re-telling of the Frankenstein story.
Can Murphy resist coming up to the lab to see what's on the slab?
