Most professional effects people use Karo syrup and food coloring.

im thinking ketchup and water and soy sauce if u want it darker

but heres a recipe off of about

Here's How:

Mix creamy peanut butter with a sufficient amount of white corn syrup to make a runny mixture.
Add (non-sudsy) soap and food colors and mix well.
Stir more corn syrup in until the desired consistency is reached.
Refrigerate unused blood in an airtight container.

Tips:

Inexpensive white corn syrup is said to be thicker and more suitable for the fake blood than its costlier relatives.

What You Need:
1 c (250mL) peanut butter
1 qt. (1 L) corn syrup
1/2 cup (125mL) soap
1 oz (30mL) red color
15 drops blue food color

I'm sure a butcher could give you some real blood, nothing more real than that.

2-1/2 Tablespoons water
60-70 drops of red food coloring
10-15 drops yellow food coloring
2-3 drops blue food coloring
5-1/2 Tablespoons white corn syrup

If you're only using it for show, and you won't have any on you or won't be having any in your mouth, use dark syrup instead.

Alfred Hitchcock used chocolate syrup in "Psycho"...The traditional corn syrup mixture wouldn't show up well enough in the black and white...He said that he wanted something that would really stand out in the shower scene, when the "blood" was swirling down the drain...I think he accomplished his goal:)

you need to use water to get the right consistency

yes i will say true to that because the corn syrup itself it too thick...water will make it run better
