I have always loved The Exorcist, it has to be classed as one of the best horror movies of all time. It may be slow but that's the whole point that the characters get time to be liked and you actually give a damn. It still freaks me out and the sound is amazing.

The sound definatley is one of the best aspects of the movie. I saw it at the theatre when they released the director's cut and the surround sound was totally creepy and fucked up (especially to a person as stonned as I was when I saw it)

The worst thing about seeing it at a movie theatre is when I went years ago (as it was the only way to see it the UK 15 years ago as it was banned still then on video) you'd get stupid kids in there just laughing at it. That soooo pissed me off because I think they were used to the eighties type horror and The Exorcist was just way too classy for them.

The scariest part of that movie for me was the image of the demon's face. I think Vodstock has it as his avatar, or did at one time. When that flashed onto the screen the first time I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep that night! *shudder*
Edit: Vodstock doesn't have it as his avatar, right now. But I believe at one point in time he did.

Its definetly a good horror movie, and it scares most people when they see it for the first time. The scariest part is definetly either the Exorcism scene or the Spider Walk scene. CREEPY!

Yeh it was the same when I saw it but the spiderwalk scene just silenced the whole theatre for the rest of the film :)

Your right, the exorcism scene was nothing compared to the Chills I got when her head turned around! I Love the voices she used too. I read that the woman who did the voice was fed raw eggs and smoked a couple packs a day to get that voice.

the worst part for me is when she is hypnotised, and the guy starts talking to the demon, and it gets pissed at him. She glares at him, then her face changes and she grabs his package. That face change never loses it's impact with me.

The actress who did the voice is Mercedes McCambridge and I don't even know that she had to hork down raw eggs or decks of smokes... she just has a very weird voice.
She was in a VERY interesting Western called Johnny Guitar, directed by Nicholas Ray, also starring Joan Crawford. I'm not a big Western fan but it's a great movie - and MCambridge is a pint-sized tornado and shrieks like Reagan possessed.

Guess I should STFU if I don't know what I'm talking about... great article below about sound and the Exorcist. McCambridge apparenty did do the eggs and smokes.

Yes the voices were really creepy. Possibly the best part about Reagan. The demon face is really scary. It creeped me out for days. (Thanks again, Vodstok :D )
Does anyone think that Samara's face when she's out of the tv looks like Reagan completely possessed? I do.

This movie was good, but I think it is overrated as the scariest movie of all time. I think it has to do with the religious aspect of the movie. It has the same impact of passion of the christ, which is a 2 hour display of torture, which would be good viewing for some sick goths. Not to mention that Passion has grossed a lot of mooney. This movie scared people because that demons possessing people is religious truth, and religion makes up the major idea of what everyone believes in. The thing that makes this move scary to most people is the fact that this can happen (based on religious truth of course) and it ignites the beliefs that were taught to them when they were young.
Scariest part is when, during the exorcism, she floats up off of the bed. That close-up of her face. Uuugh ***shudders***
I think that, what made it scary was, not only the religious implications, but it just had an all around depressing mood to it. Karras's mother dying adds to this dark atmosphere. My only problem with it is that the profanity zaps some of the creepiness from it. When I first saw it, it was the edited version on regular TV. It scared the hell out of me and it took a long time before I could get over it. When I saw it uncut for the first time, it was far less scary and more comical. You see, I find profanity to be funny, especially repetitive profanity. So, when I heard cocksucker every five minutes, it made me laugh. The edited for TV version was scarier because it had no profanity, making it much more serious and depressing.
