View Full Version : Simple Nostalgia

I revisited one of my favorite childhood snacks yesterday: the cheese sandwich. Not to be confused with its snootier cousin, the grilled cheese, the cheese sandwich was a simple concoction I could make when I was a wee Flayed before microwaves were popular and I was too young to use the stove.

Two slices of white bread
Two slices of Kraft cheese
Several slices of pickle
Squirt Frenchs yellow mustard
Eat

Of course, being much older, I the sandwich became a little more gourmet than that. I don't eat any of those ingredients anymore with the exception of the pickle slices. So I filed down the grips for custom fitting, and added a spoiler and some racing stripes.

Two slices of 9 grain bread
Several slices of Tillamook pepper jack
A couple of pepperoncinis
Stone ground mustard

Still a mighty good snack, I must say. Although the ingredients have changed, the simple formula stayed the same.

Which pickle would you use?

I like most pickles. I'm a huge fan of garlic dills, and if you can find jalapeno garlic dills, it's like an orgasm in a jar!

Of course, I seem to be a natural predator of most things pickled. Pickled peppers, asparagus, okra, tomatoes are all delicious. I started a long thread about sauerkraut around two years ago that almost made Rayne heave because I was eating it straight from the jar and eating the juice.

rofl...

I prefer tomato pickle myself. Garlic is great too...even imagining it makes my mouth water as I type this. :D

I make mine like these.

Two slices of 50/50 bread.
Medium farmhouse organic cheddar cheese.
Brown Sauce/ Pickle.

Simple and tasty. Quick to make, though I rarely eat cheese now. People aren't too big on grilled cheese sandwiches here. Don't get me wrong, they're popular, but I think the standard cheese sandwich is more popular.

I had cheese and honey on toast for the first time in about ten years recently...

I don't know if you've ever tried it, and if you think it sounds gross, I don't really care, it was aaaawesome!

I also used to eat peanut butter and honey on toast a lot as a kid, but it's just a bit too sweet these days. The honey/cheese combo is better IMO because the bitter cheese counters the sweet honey. Nom nom!
