Summit Entertainment announced Saturday that the studio is officially moving forward with the production of New Moon, the second installment of its filmed franchise Twilight, the action-packed, modern day vampire love story.
The movie will be based on the second novel in author Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series titled, New Moon. The first movie in the Twilight franchise, the self-titled Twilight, arrived in theaters this weekend to sold-out showings.
Stephenie Meyer stated, "I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment. I'm thrilled to have the chance to work with them again on New Moon."
Starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Twilight tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Swan who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father, and becomes drawn to Edward Cullen, a pale, mysterious classmate who seems determined to push her away.
But neither can deny the attraction that pulls them together ... even when Edward confides that he and his family are vampires. Their unorthodox romance puts her in physical danger when Edward's nemesis comes to town and sets his sights on Bella.
Deadline Hollywood Daily claims that Summit is considering shooting New Moon and Eclipse, based on the third book in Meyer's series, back-to-back in an effort to curtail costs.

Know what's even more disgusting than the promise of Twilight sequels?
Pattinson Doesn't Wash His Hair
30 November 2008 6:11 AM, PST
Actor Robert Pattinson has poor standards of hygiene when it comes to his hair - he never washes it.
The Twilight star has shot to fame after portraying a vampire in the new movie - but he risks jeopardising his hunk status by confessing his dirty secret.
He says, "I don't have much of a sense of personal hygiene or styling or anything. I gave up washing it a while back."

I went and saw twilight with my girlfriend. It was okay, im more into action than romance but it was interesting. The books good though, id say its better then the movie a little. The second one will probably be a smash aswell. The first day twilight came out the theater was so packed it was pathetic, i felt like i was at a concert.

Summit Entertainment has wasted no time moving ahead with the next installment in Stephenie Meyer's bestselling "Twilight" series, "New Moon."
But in an unusual move after the successful launch of a franchise that has already generated $138.6 million, the upstart distrib is not bringing director Catherine Hardwicke back to direct the picture.
Summit and Hardwicke cite Summit's wish to rush the movie into production as one reason for their split. Summit wants to release the picture, which will demand substantial CGI work, by the end of 2009 or the start of 2010. A former production designer, Hardwicke wanted more prep time.
"Twilight" scripter Melissa Rosenberg handed in a draft of "New Moon" the weekend that "Twilight" opened. Hardwicke wanted more time to work on it; Summit announced it was going ahead with "New Moon" on November 22, with no director attached. Negotiations lasted two weeks before Hardwicke formally passed on the film Saturday.
As word spread through Hollywood agencies that the talks might not result in Hardwicke's return, reports surfaced that Summit was checking out other directors for the "Twilight" franchise while they insisted they were still negotiating with Hardwicke, who delivered the biggest opening weekend ever for a woman. (CAA denies that they were soliciting other directors.) The movie is still going strong as the director and cast promote it overseas; it came in second this weekend with $13.2 million, grossing a total $138.6 million.
The problem that stalled negotiations was that Hardwicke had strong opinions about what to do with the next installment, and so did Summit. The debate was how to focus the adaptation of the second book, which deals more with giant werewolves than vampires, as well as the long depression of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), after her vampire lover (Rob Pattinson) leaves her. One issue was how to get more of teen heartthrob Pattinson into the film. (Rosenberg has figured out a device to achieve this.) But Hardwicke, burned out from her "Twilight" labors, simply wasn't willing to jam this movie with a script that still needed months of development.
"I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct 'New Moon,'" said Hardwicke. "Directing 'Twilight' has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel -- it is a great story."
"Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the 'Twilight' franchise, and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects," said Summit production prexy Erik Feig. "We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch."
Hardwicke has other balls in the air, including two projects in the works with Groundswell Entertainment's Michael London, who produced "Thirteen."

Summit Entertainment and director Chris Weitz are pleased to confirm that Taylor Lautner will reprise his role as Jacob Black in the Twilight franchise's next film installment New Moon.
"I'm very happy that Taylor will be playing Jacob Black in New Moon and that he's doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit, the producers and Stephenie Meyer," said Weitz. "The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part."
"My experience on Twilight was wonderful and I am looking forward to continuing on with the team for New Moon," said Lautner. "I have been working hard preparing for the physicality that this role will require and can't wait to get started with the filming of New Moon."
In New Moon, which will be released domestically November 20, 2009, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested.
Production on New Moon is scheduled to begin in the coming months and the studio is planning to release the film on November 20, 2009.
The action-packed, modern day vampire love story and blockbuster success of the first film in the series entitled Twilight was released in theatres on November 21st grossing $69.6 million domestically during its first weekend.
To date the film has grossed over $177 million domestically.

Fresh from the stunning success of "Twilight," Summit Entertainment has officially greenlit "Eclipse" as the third pic in the series with a release date of June 30, 2010.
Summit's expected to make the official announcement this weekend. "Twilight" has generated $189 million domestically and another $174 million overseas.

The vampire thriller represents a ready-made franchise for Summit with four books in Stephenie Meyer's series, which have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide.
In "New Moon," the Jacob character becomes a central figure in the plot as Bella is drawn into the world of the werewolves, the ancestral enemies of vampires.

A St. Louis beauty salon owner accidentally happened upon one of the hottest Hollywood scripts -- the pages from an upcoming "Twilight" sequel -- in a trash bin.
Casey Ray found two scripts, one for the vampire sequel "New Moon," and one for a different movie titled "Memoirs." She decided to return them to the studio making the films. In return, she was invited to attend the movies' premieres, her lawyer said. Ray recently was waiting for her fiance to finish work when she spotted two scripts in a trash container. She was outside a hotel where actors were staying during a St. Louis shoot for the upcoming George Clooney movie, "Up in the Air."
It's not clear how the scripts wound up in the bin.
The Clooney movie includes actress Anna Kendrick, who is also in the "Twilight" vampire movie. A spokeswoman for Kendrick, Lisa Perkins, said the actress wouldn't have left scripts lying around.
When Ray found the scripts, she considered leaking them to a national tabloid but decided against it, said her lawyer, Al Watkins.
"My client didn't really want to get paid," he said, but she was interested in hanging onto the scripts as collector's items.
Watkins helped her return them to Los Angeles-based Summit Entertainment LLC, the studio making the movies. He said the studio invited Ray to premieres for the two films, and will certify the scripts as authentic after the movies are released.
"Summit doesn't comment on any of the deals it does," Summit spokesman Paul Pflug said. But he added, "We thank Ms. Ray for doing the right thing."
The "Twilight" movies are based on the novels of Stephenie Meyer, so many of the plot turns are well known to readers. But keeping the "New Moon" script written by Melissa Rosenberg out of the public eye preserves which elements of the book will be included in the films, Pflug noted.
Last year's original "Twilight" film grossed over $350 million worldwide.

The fangirls have outdone the fanboys: The Twilight sequel New Moon had a huge opening weekend at the box office, scoring the biggest first day ever and knocking The Dark Knight off its bat-perch along the way.
The film made $72.7 million -- including midnight grosses -- on Friday, giving the second Twilight the best opening day in history. The Dark Knight only made $67.2 million on its first Friday, and that was in the summer.
New Moon also had the third-best weekend opening of all time with $140.7 million domestically, plus $118.1 million internationally -- giving the film a worldwide opening total of $258.8 million. (The Dark Knight at $158.4 million and Spider-Man 3 at $151.1 million remain the top two single-weekend earners in North America.) The picture grossed nearly twice what its predecessor made last year, proving that the Twilight fanbase is only growing -- and that female audiences are ready to fork over their dollars just as male audiences are, as long as Hollywood gives them what they want.
"This blew away a lot of preconceived notions about who you should play to, and how you get to a certain group," said Summit's Richie Fay, via Variety.
UPDATE: The final numbers have been tallied and it turns out New Moon made even more than was originally estimated, coming in at $142.8 million domestically and $124.1 million internationally for the weekend.
So, in the end, Edward Cullen kicked Batman's butt.

Moviegoers who think that the Twilight saga will be dead and buried after the third installation, Eclipse, had better think again: Summit Entertainment may release not just one but two movies based on the fourth novel in the series.
The film company is considering turning Breaking Dawn into a two-part finale to the movie series, Variety reports.
Of course, there are complications to such a move. First off, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who wrote the first three movies' scripts, hasn't begun writing. Second, director Chris Weitz, who filmed New Moon, has said he wants to quit the movie business after finishing a pet project, The Gardener.
But perhaps most critical is getting actors Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and the rest to come back on board – and paying them suitably staggering salaries.
On the other hand, if Harry Potter can pull it off, why not the Cullens?
