Sylvester Stallone has announced plans to write, direct and star in an action film entitled The Expendables.

Jason Statham will co-star and Jet Li is also in final negotiations to appear in the film, which will revolve around a team of ruthless mercenaries.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story follows their efforts to enter a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator.

Nu Image/Millennium Films is overseeing the film, which is the first in Stallone's two-picture deal with the studio. The second is expected to be a further film in the Rambo franchise.

"Making films with Nu Image/Millennium gives me as the director the opportunity to make the films I envision," Stallone said. "I am happy to be partnering with them again and am looking forward to working with Jason and Jet."

The Expendables is expected to shoot on location in Costa Rica and Louisiana in February.

Mickey Rourke has joined the ranks of "The Expendables," joining the ensemble of the Sylvester Stallone-directed action adventure for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

Rourke will play an unscrupulous arms dealer who becomes the go-to guy for a group of mercenaries planning to topple a South American dictator.

Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Dolph Lungdren play the title characters. Forest Whitaker and Ben Kingsley are also circling the project.

The Stallone-scripted film begins shooting in March in Brazil. Avi Lerner, John Tompson and Kevin King Templeton are producing, with Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort exec producers.

In recounting his rise to Oscar contention with "The Wrestler," Rourke has credited Stallone for helping him get back in the business at a low ebb, when Stallone met him at a restaurant and gave him a role in "Get Carter."

Rourke is also starring in "13," the Gela Babluani-directed remake of the French thriller "13 Tzameti," which also stars Statham, Ray Winstone, Sam Riley, 50 Cent and Ray Liotta.

Looks like someone heard Newb's last comment...

The Expendables, Sylvester Stallone's throwback to the action classics of the 1980s, just got a whole lot cooler with news that Arnold Schwarzenegger is joining the cast.

The role shouldn't be too much of a stretch for the big fella' however, as the Governator will apparently be playing 'Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger' in the movie.

There's no news yet regarding how his character fits into the story of a group of merceneries entering a South American country to overthrow its dictator, but according to Ain't It Cool News, the Governor has some history with Stallone's character, originating from the time of the Conan the Barbarian shoot.

And for those concerned about his political endeavours, have no fear - Arnie will only be spending one day on set before returning to rule roost in California.

AICN also reports that Eric Roberts has replaced Ben Kingsley as CIA man Church in the film, and that Stallone is currently trying to inject the right balance of "humour, action and emotional reality" into the script.

The Expendables features a veritable who's who of action legends in the cast, including Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham, making it a shoe-in for 2010's most testosterone-fuelled film.

Throw Chuck Norris and Steve Seagal in the mix and they could conquer the world.

They must be arguing over whos character dies and how heroically they buy it.

This has "too-badass-to-EVER-work" written all over it.

I love me a good ol' mindless action movie from time to time - and this sounds like the formula for classic - but I'd bet good money it'll fall flat somehow.

But, fuck it: you can bet I'll still be seeing it in theatres.

Kind of reminds me of "back in the day" when they paired the then two biggest box office draws, Clint Eastwood & Burt Reynolds in one movie.

Does anybody remember "City Heat".......didn't think so.

I remember that if anyone knocked Clint whilst drinking his coffee, the eye started twitching and then a can of kick ass was opened.

WWE alum "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Charisma Carpenter have been added to the cast of "The Expendables," starring, written and directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Cast includes Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham too.

Austin recently wrapped fight pic "Damage" and inked a TV development deal with Original Media and Caliber Media. Carpenter just completed horror pics "House of Bones" and "Vivid."

You just made my day by telling me about this. Honestly i couldn't be happier right now, this sounds like the most bad ass movie ever. Stallone, Rourke, and [I]Schwarzenegger???!!!![/I Too bad Arnie's not going to be playing an ass kicking role though!:(
Another part that makes me ecstatic is that hes making the other Rambo afterwards, Stallone had been doing other jobs and I thought it had gotten dropped, but i hasn't, yaaaaay!

Looks like you better not hold out hope for that Tango & Cash reunion anytime soon.

In a message to fansite StalloneZone, actor-director Sylvester Stallone revealed that he recently reached out to his Tango & Cash co-star Kurt Russell to appear in his all-star action flick The Expendables, which also stars Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Eric Roberts, Terry Crews (who replaced Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson who had replaced Forest Whitaker) and, in a cameo, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"I know that many people on the site have asked for Kurt Russell. I asked for him too. Actually, I was taken aback when asked to put the request in a letter and send it to his agent," Stallone wrote. "Subsequently, I was called back by the agent several days later after refusing to send a letter and he said Kurt Russell is not interested in 'ensemble acting' at this time. So, People, I came, I saw, I failed."

The Expendables is now filming for a April 23, 2010 release.

Wow this sounds amazing. Well apart from Jason Statham! I can't stand the guy I hate how he tries to pull of Clint Eastwood manerisms all the time. Dude's a fucking awful actor.

In fairness, this film isnt going to stand or fall from the quality of the acting. Its hardly packed with oscar winners.

Like him or hate him, Statham can do action, just like the rest of the cast and its that which will determine how good this film turns out.

If you were thinking The Expendables couldn't get any more macho or testosterone-fuelled, think again, as yet another action legend has been added to the cast.

Bruce Willis - star of Die Hard one-thru-four as well as The Last Boy Scout, Armageddon and The Fifth Element - has signed up for what could be the greatest action movie of them all.

Speaking to MTV, Willis revealed that he has yet to shoot the cameo, but that he is leaving time open on his schedule for it. "I don't know anything about [my character] yet, haven't seen any pages" he explained. "But I'm excited about it."

And in news that is sure to excite action fans of the 1980s and '90s, the scene looks set to finally unite the three biggest stars of that era in the shape of Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"That's the concept," Willis revealed. "That's the plan."

The Expendables revolves around a group of mercenaries endeavouring to overthrow a South American dictator, and stars Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Randy Couture, as well as the aforementioned triumvirate of testosterone.

-- During shooting for Steve Austin's new film The Expendables, The Daily Mail in the UK reports that Sylvester Stallone suffered a hairline fracture in his neck after a very realistic fight scene with Austin. Stallone needed to have emergency surgery and a metal plate inserted in his neck following the scene.

About the incident, Stallone had the following to say:

"Actually, my fight with Stone Cold Steve Austin was so vicious that I ended up getting a hairline fracture in my neck. I'm not joking. I haven't told anyone this, but I had to have a very serious operation afterwards. I now have a metal plate in my neck."

The last few weeks have seen a bit of back and forth about how Lionsgate would release The Expendables; to hear producer Avi Lerner tell it, test audiences would have at least some influence on the rating depending on their reactions to PG-13- and R-rated cuts.

But more evidence emerged today that the film will arrive in the theaters the way Sylvester Stallone intended. And I think we all know what he intended.

The latest batch of MPAA ratings have The Expendables rated R for “strong action and bloody violence throughout, and for some language.”

On the one hand, that rating’s not really news; Lionsgate said as recently as last week that it always planned to release the mercenary action thriller with an R-rating. (And they’ve already began marketing it as such.) And technically, Lerner can still maintain his plan to test away with whatever sanitized cut he wants.

On the other hand, the obvious catch now is that there officially is no PG-13 version to test, unless it’s coming later — which could always happen. But with the film opening Aug. 13, I’m not sure how much later they want to test a movie that’s already been delayed months and has its audience pretty much set to begin with.

Anyway, there’s always time to screw up a perfectly good thing, so I’ll just append a “developing” here and check back in if/when the ‘Gate loses its nerve.

But don’t count on it.
