I support this idea 100% - in fact, I've been throwing around a very similar idea.

I've been a part of stuff like this on other sites and it's an absolute blast. Can't wait to get into one here!

That's funny, you PM'd me just a few days ago about something like this. I'm willing and ready, and if anybody wants I can set up an IRC channel for realtime chat. I can also help people get on IRC who don't know how.

How are the movies decided? I suggest we get a list of four or five together with dates to allow people time to rent (brick and mortar or Netflix) instead of picking one at a time.

They should be movies that most of us are already familiar with...it would suck watching a movie for the first time like this. Also, it'd be best to avoid really serious movies...just more fun that way.

I think Dead-Alive would be a super fun way to start this thing off. That, or one of the Evil Dead flicks - when I did this on another forum we watched Army of Darkness, and it was perfect.

Some other suggestions: maybe Halloween, The Thing (any Carpenter movie would suit this, actually), Nightmare on Elm Street, Day of the Dead, any of the old Universal classics...

Frighteners is a good choice,i love that one:)

I think a separate thread should be started for the actual viewings...if we kept it all to this one, things could get pretty glarbled.

I say we use this as the home base, shall we say, for deciding when/what/who/ect., and then start separate threads on the actual night of the viewing, like:

"HDC Modern Horror Theatre Presents: Dead-Alive"

That would just make it a little neater...plus easier to catalog them, too.

If I had to narrow my list to 3, I'd go for:

Dead-Alive
The Frighteners
The Thing

...in that order.

As for times...I'm free most every evening, as long as I have some notice. So I love your idea of having a set calendar of dates/times. That'd be awesome, as opposed to trying to get organized a couple days in advance.

Pumped to see this happen. Going to be fucking awesome!

I agree with this whole heartedly. I don't know when we would do it though. People are usually busy on weekends, but also have to work and stuff on weekdays.

I will participate when I can. Like Return said, I think we'll get a better turn out if we post a reminder like morning of the scheduled day in the General Forum. People can bump it throughout the day.

IRC is a must because it will be hard to keep refreshing the forum while trying to enjoy the movie.

I also think part way through the movie we whould have a time when everyone pauses for "Intermission" Snacks and bathroom break. We can even link some youtube vids of those intermission cartoons for the meantime, and once everyones back on chat all hit play.

I don't mind refreshing but if it's on IRC I can always log the convo for everybody and post it later. I like your choices Return and I'm up for (and own) just about everything. The best nights for me would be Thursday and Friday nights, there are usually a couple others but they change regularly.

Ooooo. I have two out of three of those films.

Afternoons or late afternoons are not good for me... Friday nights however... Well, I don't really have a life... :o

Why? I rarely use it, so I don't know it's flaws. I it's just handy for when you need a chat for something. We used it for NE's Halloween radio and it was great.

I haven't used it at length either, but in my experience IRC is messy, clunky and just all-around unpleasant.

Refreshing really isn't that hard, and most browsers can be set to auto-refresh anyway - problem solved. Besides, if we keep it on the forum, more people will look at it after the fact, which will lead to more people getting involved down the road.

I'll participate either way, of course, but I'd far rather see it stay at HDC.

If I had to pick an ideal night, I'd probably say Thursday...but I'm good just about every evening, like I said. I work 10-6 shifts, so it works out well for stuff like this - home at a decent hour, and don't have to get up too early in the morning. Whenever works for you guys woks for me!

I'd be more than happy to helm this if no one else wants to.

EDIT: Nevermind! Just saw your comment, Return.

Now we'll be talking about it as we watch it, yeah?
At any rate, Thursday the 13th might not work for me. I'll know for sure in a day or so.
Even so, don't let me hold it back if I can't make it.

How about Thursday the 13th at 9:00 PM? The Frighteners

thats ET, CT or PT?

We are having our annual November Film Fest, and The Frighteners is a pretty good cheesy flick. Count me in.

Since that seems to be good for everyone else, I say go for it.
I'll be sure to make it for the next one.

Thursday sounds like a plan to me - shame you can't make it though Fortunato.

So, 9:00 pm Eastern Standard Time - that works out to 2:00 Greenwich Mean Time. I'll let the rest of you work it out from there, ok?

Now, here's an important note on The Frighteners: will we be watching the Theatrical cut, or the Directors cut? As it stands I only own the Theatrical cut, but I've been meaning to grab the Director's cut DVD anyway. We should make sure that everyone's versions have the same running time before we get started.

Here's how I'd like this to work, personally. We'll keep this thread for planning/discussion of upcoming events/feedback, ect. For the actual synchronized viewings, myself or another member will start a second thread earlier in the day on Thursday. We'll all congregate there at the agreed upon time, sync up our DVD players, and - BAM - HDC movie night.

This sound ok with everyone?

Sadly, I won't be able to make this. I just don't have time between now and Xmas with my job and the encyclopedia. Not to mention Thursday is the middle of my work week.

I really want to do the next one, though. I hope I can make it.

....so, tonight was a resounding failure.

Lets see what went wrong:

- Too short notice?
- Poor choice of date/time?
- Not a popular enough movie?
- Something else entirely?

We've learned that this will take some more planning. Lets get together and make this work for next time, ok?

Cool movie - friend borrowed it and never gave it back but I was all set with Netflix's watch it now... unfortunately something came up. I even left while logged in and didn't turn the pc off.

Agreed. Let's.
It might be easier to start putting a list together of people that plan on joining us, maybe a week or so before the date, just to have something to look at and so you can try to keep reminding those people.

I think this is a great idea and I am totally down. I am free mostly anytime so I will come in when you guys decide an actual date and time. I don't have the movie on DVD so I am going to gave to find a streaming video of it online but that is alright.

Alright Return, guys... let's get goin' on another one! Thanksgiving is coming up and I'm hoping we can get a viewing before then. How about The Thing or Evil Dead II? We can do it on the board OR this Yahoo Messenger thing _V_ got me into seems great for this type of thing. When's a good time for everybody? What movie you want to watch?

well if maybe we could still have a quick vote on it, lets get a fe more sugestions then we can start a poll and decide by Sunday...

I'll sugest Dog Soldigers.. just because I'm thinking of buying the special edition tomorrow.. but what ever we decide should be streamed online to include more people.

They have it for 4 quid at the ASDA ( a supermarket here) up from my work, I saw it when I got my dvd player on Halloween when I bought it but didn't have enough cash on me for both.. I going to go up after work tomorrow and and grab it if they still have it.

I haven't had the chance since then, I hope it's not sold out....

Good luck, how do you propose it be streamed online? You mean find a site streaming it? I think fearnet.com has some free flicks that stream and once in a great while they're good. Right now they have...

Near Dark
The Dentist*
Haunted Highway
Peeping Tom*
Catacombs
The Tomb
Fever
Nine Lives
Tequila Body Shots

So, lets try to work out a good date/time for this. IMO, it should be:

- At least 2 weeks from now
- A Friday or Saturday evening
- Evening (I think 9pm EST is just about perfect, but an hour either way would still work)

And for movies...I like the suggestions so far. Frighteners, Evil Dead II, Dead-Alive, The Thing - all perfect.

There was talk initially about coming up with an event calendar for this - I really like that idea. So lets get together and pick a month or two worth of dates, times and movies, and get that posted ASAP.

I know from experience that this kind of thing is incredibly fun, and can't wait to get it started here. Lets make it work!

Oh, __V__ - I did get Yahoo, but I'm not crazy about it. I'll use it when we need to...but I wont likely be around otherwise.
