It's slapstick versus gross-out: the Farrelly brothers, directors of high-concept comedies such as Me, Myself and Irene and Stuck on You, are to take on a new big-screen outing for the Three Stooges.
The film-makers, who pushed the envelope of what was acceptably funny in the late 90s and early part of this decade, are now planning to bring Moe, Larry and Curly back to the silver screen, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Their planned feature will actually be a series of four 20-minute shorts, in tribute to the format of the original Stooges' outings. There are no casting details yet, but the brothers will be looking for actors who can pull off Moe's surly alpha male, Larry's humourous sidekick and Curly's clumsy ignoramus.
The first episode will set the Stooges as seven-year-olds terrorising an orphanage run by nuns, until they are finally kicked out and left to fend for themselves.
"The Three Stooges are a timeless staple of comedy," said Mary Parent, chair of studio MGM, which will back the feature. "And when we heard what the Farrellys had in mind, we knew it was time for Larry, Moe and Curly to return to the big screen."
The original Three Stooges were active between 1923 and 1975, undergoing several lineup changes along the way. They made more than 25 feature films. In 2000, Mel Gibson produced a TV biopic, The Three Stooges, based on Michael Fleming's authorised biography, The Three Stooges: From Amalgamated Morons to American Icons.

I love the use of the term "several lineup changes". That sounds much nicer than "Moes brothers kept dying and they wound up with Curly Joe, who most definitely was NOT a Howard"

This is fucked up. The Three Stooges are the fathers of true slapstick the Farlley brothers need to back up and realise they will not bring justice to it nor could anyone else. Not to mention no one they could cast will do it justice. I hate Hollywood and everything it stands for. I curse this production. Next thing you know the Coens will be remaking Jim Varney's films. Ernest goes to Fargo.

I'm honestly not even a big fan of the Stooges, but this is just a sick and sad idea.
You can remake a movie, but you can't remake people.

I have watched alot of Stooges with my dad and i think this will really shock him.I'm not sure how i feel about it,i'm not a huge fan.I can understand why alot of fans would be upset and i can see why they would enjoy it.I guess we will see what happens.:)

How could even anyone think of remaking this timeless greatest comedy? Even we have also a very strong fan base of this series here in Bangladesh. It was a very popular tv series on our national television in early 90's when it first got started here. Even some other Bangla tv channels have already now started it again on a daily basis as there are still many people love to watch its each & every episode again & again.

After five years of being slapped around Hollywood, funny filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s big-screen “Three Stooges” comedy is back on track.
The $45 million nyukfest, co-written and directed by the Rhode Island homeys, has been picked up by MGM and is due to hit the theaters Nov. 20, 2009.
Peter, who worked on the script with his brother and Michael Cerrone, claims that the PG- or PG-13-rated comedy, won’t be a biopic of Moe, Larry and Curly.
“It takes place in the present day, and they look, dress and sound exactly like the Stooges,” he told Variety.
A couple of years ago, Bobby told the Track that Tinseltown titans George Clooney and Russell Crowe were interested in playing Moe. Ditto for Jack Black and Benicio Del Torro.
And the brothers thought they’d try to get their Vineyard pal, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star Larry David, to play Larry because “he has the hair.” But, alas, the TV crank was otherwise occupied.
“When the economy started turning, we felt like the world could use a Stooges slapfest,” Peter told the showbiz bible. “Bobby and I haven’t done a real physical comedy in a while, and it’s the most exciting thing we could think of now, to have people go to the movie, see some great slapstick, fun family humor.”
While Peter didn’t say who they’d like to see play Moe and Larry, he told the Hollywood daily that an “American Idol”-like search will launch to find the perfect Curly. And another contest is planned to find a few comedy shorts to show before the film - sort of like they did back in the Stooges’ heyday.
“We hope that next Thanksgiving, dads will introduce their kids to the Stooges and create a new generation of knuckleheads,” said Peter.

Sure, it's an historic day and we've got a new president. But let's get down to a theme that unifies all people (well, actually just all males probably): The Three Stooges are coming back!
The Farrelly Brothers, whose last big hit was There's Something About Mary in 1998, are hoping to make a comeback via the Stooges..
The producer-director team are making a new Three Stooges film but have just one problem: the original Moe, Larry, and Curly are no longer with us. So who did they approach to star in the new slapstick comedy?
"We went to Clooney," Peter Farrelly says, and were turned down. "Russell Crowe passed. Benicio was interested. Jeff Daniels was interested." They approached Larry David for Larry and that was a no-go. Sean Penn is said to be interested in that part.
So they still have just a script with no stars, and their next movie is Walter the Farting Dog starring the Jonas Brothers.
Hmmmm. Can the Jonas boys take a pratfall?

MGM and the Farrelly brothers are finally slapping together their high-profile cast for "The Three Stooges," a comedy project the filmmakers have been developing for years. Sean Penn is set to play Larry, and Jim Carrey is in negotiations to play Curly. Benicio del Toro is a rumored possibility for the brothers' taciturn leader, Moe.

The studio is looking to start production in the fall for a 2010 release slot.
The project was originally set up at Columbia, which produced the 1930s Stooges shorts. C3 Entertainment Inc., which holds the licensing rights to the Stooges brand, then sold the feature rights to Warner Bros. in 2001 for the Farrellys to write and produce the movie. Eventually, Warner Bros. let the rights lapse and MGM's Mary Parent scooped them up along with the Farrellys' continuing participation.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly wrote the script, which Bobby has referenced as "Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest," and will produce with Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler. Earl and Robert Benjamin of C3 will executive produce.
The film is not a biopic but a fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges' gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu.
Originally constructed as four separate shorts, the feature screenplay has since been streamlined into a single narrative. Included in the story line is an opening that shows the Stooges as kids in an orphanage, a device that will require some "Benjamin Button"-style visual trickery to place the adult actors' heads on child actors' bodies.
The Stooges maintain remarkably global brand recognition, and their shorts, films and cartoons are still broadcast in 30 countries. The Farrelly brothers' latest comedy "The Heartbreak Kid" grossed $124 million worldwide.
Penn is repped by CAA, Carrey by CAA and the Miller Co.

The Farrelly brothers have found their replacement for Sean Penn, who dropped out of playing Larry in their big-screen revamp of The Three Stooges.
Director Peter Farrelly informed The Boston Globe that Emmy winner Paul Giamatti has signed on for the part. Unfortunately, they have now lost another Stooge in the process.
Jim Carrey had been announced as Curly -- a role that would have required the gangly funnyman to gain 50 lbs. -- but he is no longer going to play the part. No reason was given to the Globe, but filming on The Three Stooges was delayed considerably when Penn left the project in June citing personal reasons.
Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro remains set, however, to play Moe.

Glee’s greatest asset Jane Lynch has just signed up to transfer her inimitable talents in intimidation to the Three Stooges film.
Lynch has been drafted in to play Mother Superior in the movie, with Deadline reporting that she’ll appear in the film’s opening ‘episode’.
As directors the Farrelly brothers have previously stated, they’re forging The Three Stooges as a proper ode to the original TV show, with the film consisting of three distinct episodes. The first episode will trace the Stooges’ years at an orphanage.
Also previously, Sean Hayes signed on as Larry, Will Sasso as Curly, and Chris Diamantopoulos is still in negotiations to play Moe.
The Farrellys have taken their time getting this project off the ground, but with casting picking up speed, it looks like they’re finally succeeding where they were previously struggling.
