I can replace everything else...'Things' don't really mean much to me...Although, I would hate to have to start my horror movie and book collections all over again

I live in a pretty small apartment, so, these things could get done in a matter of moments...not to mention, there's two of us, see?

I'd take the pc tower as nearly all our photos are on there, not to mention it's pretty much all you need for any entertainment.

I'd grab our clothes into big garbage bags.

Probably grab my big knife, cutting board and large nonstick pan.

I have the same attitude toward clothing...Clothes are cheap and easy to replace...Especially when the majority of your wardrobe (like mine) is jeans and t-shirts...Although, I would kinda miss my boots...Still, I could always get more :)

My house on fire and I got 2 minutes? Hmm...

First 30 seconds - Grab anything valuable - computer server (luckily my server cabinet comes with a handle on top :D ), pack of DVDs (I do put the valuable ones aside in a neat little packing, just for emergencies like this), and yell at my wife and Mom in the meanwhile.

Second 30 seconds - Run around and make a quick peek through all the rooms for a surreptious (sp?) glance for anything of value - clothes I would skip, as with other heavy objects.

Third 30 seconds - Jump into the bedroom and take some (if not all) cash out. Important to have funds in hand.

Last 30 seconds - Make a hasty dash out with family members, and call the Firemen from the cell.


That oughta do it. :) Although I separated the entire happening into 30 second-brackets, I wont be exactly checking out the watch while doing all the stuff I mentioned above, for sure.

Actually, it helps immensely to have a calm mind when facing such a sort of emergency.

We can make plans, but if it really happens, we have no idea what we might do, and it can be difficult for some people to think rationally during an emergency


Many years ago, my neighbor across the street had woken up in the middle of the night to a loud 'POP'...It was Christmas time, snowing, and he had a kerosene heater in the living room...His Christmas tree was in front of his window, the heater was about 4 feet from the window...And he entered the livingroom to find that his kerosene heater had exploded on the inside...He didn't know that his teenaged son had accidentally put gasoline in it instead of kerosene

His first reaction was to grab the handle of the heater (burning his hand), and drag it through the livingroom and kitchen to throw it out the side door...Which leaked a trail of gasoline all through the house, which quickly caught the carpet on fire

He lost everything because he didn't want to break the front window...He could have picked up the heater and thrown it through the window to save his house...But, it just didn't occur to him at the time...

I would think that I would act rationally, because I'm extremely logic-minded, and have had to deal with a few 'emergencies' when my mother was staring open-mouthed in a complete state of shock unable to move...Her inaction concerned me far more than the situation, but I handled it...I can't remember ever 'freaking out' at any time in my life...Of course, I still think we can't really be sure what we might do in any given emergency situation

It has 1 t-shirt, 1 sweater, 1 pair of socks, 2 pairs of boxers, a ratty pair of sneakers, a light stick, a water purifyier straw and $200 cash. It's the "shit just hit the fan" bag. I joke about beer all the time here....its part of my persona. But let me tell you about the time
that beer...saved my family.

It was about 18 years ago...a warm august Sunday night at about 11:00 pm. Normally on a Sunday night
at this time I probably would have fallen asleep on the couch in the basement watching a movie.
But this Sunday night a friend of mine stopped by for a few "cold ones". At the time I only had three kids and my oldest was away staying at a friend's house. My other two [ages 8 & 6 ] were asleep in their room. My friend, my wife and myself were sitting on the back porch discussing world peace or some
other hot topic [ most likely something like "If the professor could make a radio out of a coconut...why couldn't
he get them off the damn island ] when my son came down from his room complaining about his foot and his face was covered in ...something black...it took but a second to figure out what was going on [ his foot had a burn on it ]and I bolted up the stairs for my daughter.She was not in her bed...WTF..the room was filling up with smoke and by the
time I spun around to look for her...the whole second floor was engulfed in black smoke. I felt my way around until I got to me and my wife's room..calling my daughters name [ shit...I'm getting goosebumps as I type this...something you NEVER forget]
I couldn't see jack shit and it was getting hard to breathe. I frantically reached and grabbed for ANYTHING in the dark
when I felt her little hand......I grabbed on for dear life and made my way downstairs and out the door. The firemen were there in minutes
and extinguished the flames. This whole episode only lasted a few minutes but it seemed like forever. We all went to the hospital to get checked out [ first and hopefully last time in an ambulance for me ] The second floor of my house had to be refurbished...mostly from smoke damage. They say to get down close to the floor in a fire and this is indeed the truth.
The walls on the second floor were as black as pitch down to about six inches from the floor.

So this is my story... its 100% true...BEER SAVED MY FAMILY
