In need of Horror Movie Assistance

I thought about posting this in the general thread, but I thought here, made more sense.

So for a person that's only seen Child's Play (and everything else that includes Chucky), Leprachuan Films, Nightmare on Elm Street (and Anything else involving Freddy) as well as Frankenstein, what advice would you get in seeing future horror flicks. Keep in mind, I'm not completely "horror retarded" just a little behind.

As far as what you've seen and like, you seem to have a love for supernatural monster/slashers. Try the Jeepers Creepers series. I think you'd enjoy them.

All of these seem to be right up your ally. Watch them and report back. Then we'll start working on branching out.

I just always had the tape. The R2 DVD was kinda hard to come across too. The R1 release looks great I'll have to pick it up sometime.

You could always go for some nice Jap horror , like Ju-On The Grudge, or Ringu films.
The Final Destination films are pretty cool, Oh and the Saw , Hostal films to.

I've only seen the first one, but thought it was one of the better post-Scream slashers. Really original kills and a well-written story - I really enjoy it.

Haven't seen #2 or #3, but I recommend the first one for sure.

2 is incredibly good. Three has its ups and downs, but I still think it's fun. Definately check out two, though. One of the better sequels mad in the last 30 years, probably surpassing the original.

Hey, sorry my bad...didn't see it.

Let's see. Suspense...Intrigue....not as much gory stuff...usually the psychological ones are cool to me...if there's any horror villain that possess charm and wit like Leprachaun and Chucky that be great. I don't really like the characters whom are for the most part monotone, with the "just kill and destroy" attitude.

Ils (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465203/) is a fantastic little French horror movie that has a LOT of suspense, but not a huge amount of gore.
The Orphanage (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464141/) is also a good view in terms of suspense and intrigue.
Crazy Eights (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470993/) is a good little ghost story with quite a bit of suspense. It's low-budget, but incredibly well-done.
The original Black Christmas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071222/) (1974) is so incredibly underrated, most likely because it was ahead of its time. It is a masterful suspense film that creates that sort of stoic, emotionless Big Bad that you mentioned enjoying.

Ack. "Absurd" was the wrong word to use there; I was being lazy. Didn't think you'd pay attention. ;) TRUE absurdity (in the way that I honestly define it to myself) would be a movie by Lynch (Eraserhead) or Miike (Gozu, Visitor Q).

I think a better term would be "super-natural horror," but not in the sort of super-natural ghost/apparition sense; in the super-natural urban legend, stuff of dreams kind of sense. These examples should help:

Freddy is intricately bound to legends and dreams (with the "cause" being the great reveal).
Chucky is the stuff of super-natural possession.
Candyman is the stuff of pure urban legend.
Leprechaun, too, is the stuff of pure legend.


Honestly, I find those movies... just... silly because I have a difficult time suspending my disbelief. They're not really my cup of tea...

I would probably lump Pet Sematary (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098084/) in there as well.

ACTUALLY, in a related vein with movies that I DO like...

You should check out Fright Night (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089175/) and Lost Boys (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093437/). Pretty classic modern vampire films. They loop to legend because you have characters in "modern day" dealing with the stuff of lore and fantasy (vampires).

Well I won't give away the ending because that spoils all the fun :-P But it's incredibly well written with good acting (which is pretty rare in horror movies I think) and the way the atmosphere is created works effectively. I'm probably not saying this in the best way because I don't know a whole about film, but you really need to see this movie. You won't be disappointed.

no (although i have that book) I was definately thinking of The Other. I first saw it on TV - and it was a long time ago - so that may be why ..

about a year ago - after searching for ages I found the DVD for sale in the UK - bought it ... and then about 2 weeks later i found it in a used DVD store in my home town for $7. Havent seen a copy anywhere since.
