View Full Version : my proposed 30 Day Waiting Period

After seeing a recent glut of threads for cell phones, gym shoes, sex sites, etc as well as the usual drive by one post spamming of crappy bands, movies, artwork and other non-talented ilk that screams "mommy didn't give me enough attention as a child", I propose that all newbs are confined to the 'Introduce Yourself' forum for a 30 day period to either become an active member in the community or take their crap elsewhere.

Doesn't matter what results your poll has- the only one with admin powers who could initiate such a plan has absolutely no interest in the goings on of the forum.

Forum is inactive enough with adding rules like this.

Yeah but quality is better than quantity.
Must say that the spammers don't really distress me that much. As long as they get treated with the respect they deserve... :D

As if in silent protest to this thread or something...12 new "members" have joined HDC after this thread was posted!!
Also, 35 new "members" have joined up within the past 4 days.
The Average for Active Members has shot up from 278 on 25th September, to 333 a few moments ago.
How many real? How many spam-bots? Clones? Ghosts? Where do they come from? And where do they go after registering?
You tell me.

This is weird. And really uncanny.

its not a big deal ... they make a post or 2 - provide angry people a punching bag for a day or so - then they are deleted and banned - probably by Z.
i really dont think there's enough of it to be an issue.
plus : this place NEEDS fresh meat - if i had to wait 30 days i'd lose intrests and post elsewhere - last thing this place needs is to discourage potential good posters from joining.
it's prety dead in here at times.

Very true.
Sure, out of all these people that are joining, most are either spamming or just disappearing. But occasionally a good new member comes along and it would be a real shame to miss out on these members.
I am sure a lot of people, if they were told that they would have to wait 30 days to post, would just move along to the next forum. Mostly that would be a good thing :D but occasionally it would be a real shame.

We just had a potentially cool member make her first post at the end of this thread:

yeah.......I don't think we should discourage new members. 30 days seems like an awful long time. For every 5 or 6 Leland Malinski's we get one or two Chronogrl's.

The spammers are fun. It has been years since we had anyone truly offensive join, and a couple of annoying retards arent that big a deal. Ignore them, or pick on them.
Besides, the way this place has changed in the last damn near 5 years  even if we had the offensive ones again, it would just turn into playtime. :)

If they are just coming to spam then they won't even be here 30 minutes. Its not a huge deal to me,its not like we have to read it or respond. The ones that come here asking us questions about horror for class assignments really don't bother me that much.Where else would they go for that info?I guess a lil spam never hurt anybody!

I don't know about 30 days, but a 24 or 48hr probation might be useful.

Yeah, that could work.If they were only going to spam that would make them lose intrest.

12 or 24 hrs might be okay. Anything longer than that and nobody would join.

I don't know why. Usually I'll read a board for a year or so before I even join it. What usually pushes me over the edge to join is being able to use the search function, not being able to post.

Really? I must be a gotta-post-right-away kind of girl. :p I think this is the only board I've belonged to over a few months.

yeah - i want to post pretty much right away -
i'll view the board without joining to see if i'm interested .. and in that time of viewing i'll get the atmosphere and culture of the board...
then i join and start posting.
because apparently - i'm a post-whore.

Some of these members with 1 and 2 posts have visited this site often, just not written anything.
I wonder how many just come to read the info??

Probably. There are a few message boards I visit just to read (although one I used to post at until they went to paid membership.)

Add acne cream and Viagra to today's spam. 48 hours or mod approval upon registering would work for me as well

I'm with Urge, I certainly wouldn't have joined if there was a 30 day rule. I see where you're coming from with the rule but crappy threads don't bother me at all, I simply don't read them. If I stumble into a crappy thread I just use my trusty "back" button and all is peaceful again.

I agree 30 days is to long, perhaps though a span of 3 posts and three days in the new members lounge would be enough... or something like that, just for a while as a mild deterrent.

But what about a 24 or 48hr rule? How about a 29 day, 17 hour and 13.2 minute rule? Have you ever considered these possibilities?

The only thing that really bother's me is the people that join to ask the name of a movie and then you never see them again.
I also don't see why some people go through the process of siging up and never even make a single post.

Even a 24 hour period to weed out the spambots for Cialis and such should at least be considered. Or at least put a catchpa in the registration process.

Heh, well 24 hours I can see being easier to swallow but even I, an easily annoyed person who is disgusted with stupid people, am not bugged by the spam.

As I mentioned in the first place- the whole discussion is moot. The only one who could put such a system in place barely knows there's a forum any more.

I've only been here a day and a half? Or two days? I was wondering why some people have been very helpful in answering my questions while others simply ignore me. When I join a board, I really get deeply involved. Perhaps this is annoying to some of you...I've been told that I "come on too strong" on the Internet. I'm home most of the time and the Internet and my cell phone are my best friends, other than my dogs. :) In person, I am very reclusive but not unfriendly. I like the subject matter on this board and it seems to be a pretty friendly atmosphere. I don't mean to offend anyone. I am just a chatterbox. Hehe. Anyway, thanks for letting me join. I have yet to spam anyone and I like to make new friends. My son left for college last June and I'm divorced. A girl needs some kind of entertainment (I quit drinking almost 7 months ago and I haven't smoked any little cigars since early July). ;)
Sorry to be so long-winded. I hope I haven't aggravated too many of you...:(

If you get an answer to something from one person, why would you want ten people to tell you the same thing?

As I said, I don't mean to offend. I do have at least one other post that I can think of that I would like more than one answer to. :) It's in the Books section...

But you didn't show up with a series of posts of "hey ! You guys have to check out this new movie ! It's great !" over and over, only responding to that since you were somehow connected to that movie. People do that often as if nobody could ever guess that. Or people sign up to ask the name of a movie and disappear. Or the new bombardment of Viagra, cell phones, shoes, etc. If they only signed up to shill something, they shouldn't be allowed to do so. Make them wait a day or two. If they are really here to be part of the community, great. If not, they won't wait and go elsewhere.
