Anyone who had been hoping that the big screen version of the hit videogame Max Payne would be a hardcore, R-rated release will be very disappointed by the following news.

GameDaily reports that Max Payne, a 20th Century Fox release, has been re-cut to attain a broader audience-friendly PG-13 rating. The John Moore-directed film had initially earned an "R" rating from the Motion Picture Association of America due to its violent content.

What's notable, however, is that this time it was the director and not the studio forcing the issue of getting the more audience-friendly PG-13 rating. "I didn't have to change much. We trimmed some frames more for the sake of trimming frames than anything, but we got the rating without any major changes at all," Moore told GameDaily. "I'm a little surprised that we changed their minds, effectively, but I'm happy about it. It proves that if you stick to your guns and you have the creative, and dare I say moral sense, that you're in the right, that you can get the right thing done."

But lest you fear you may never see the darker version of Max Payne, Moore has a plan up his sleeve. "There's what I call the Gamer Dedicated Cut of the movie. It's a little slower and a little more atmospheric. There are some rougher edges on it, but it's not going to be a bloodfest. I want this to be the Max Payne that I set out to shoot. It's not that I wanted to release one version in the theaters and make a cheap buck by following up with a blood-drenched DVD version. The movie you see in the theaters will be an intense experience and the movie you see on DVD will be as intense an experience too, with some extra sensibilities for people who really adore the game."

Why do you hate all nerds? Were you dumped by a nerd? did a nerd cornhole your dog or kill your family?

Come on MD, love a nerd :)

Oh, and this could suck, but Max Payne wasnt the bloodiest game ever, merely violent.

Now, if they make a PG 13 FEAR movie, I will kill someone. Seriously.

Correct, because the director was a HUGE fan of the games. So often, the producers purchase the rights because the game is popular, then they stick it with some hack director and bullshit writer, often people who dont even know the subject matter.

Did Paul WS Anderson ever even play Resident Evil? They were horror games, not action...

I'm sorry, I wasnt quite yet into double digits when Pac-Man fell out of vogue, so my memory of it is a bit hazy. I forgot there was a "mouth opening" noise too.

Thats what we need, a live action pac man movie :D

Or better still, live action Frogger. Just 90 minutes of stock footage of frogs getting run over on a highway. Plot is provided via voice over, with someone mimicking Dudley Moore a-la "Milo and Otis".

If this comes to pass, i want every forum member to forward me a dollar to celebrate my greatness :D

Ah, I've been found out! ;)

While it's not the original Dumas I still think it's entertaining.

R or PG-13, I think those demons flying around really turned me off of the film anyway.

I'm hoping those are crazy dream sequences, since aside from the names of things, there is nothing even remotely supernatural or fantasy about Max Payne. Since the developement team was Norwegian, everything was from norse mythology. Although even the first time through the game, I had to groan at "Ragna-rock". Thats just bad.

Yeah, if those aren't dream sequences it will be a joke of a movie. I was thinking since they were featured in the trailer so often it couldn't possible be a dream but then I remembered the trailer for The Beach.

They're suppose to be Valkyries, not demons. Personally, I think they're cool and the whole trailer gave me kind of a "Crow" feel.

I've never played the game, but I'll see the movie (whether it be theater or DVD), I think it looks good.

The whole P-13 thing is lame, though. I think more movies should be R, it's not like it stops the kids from seeing it anyway.

They had nothing to do with the game though, it's like taking a novel and adapting it only to add some crazy supernatural elements that never existed.

Yeah, the whole point o fthe game was for it to be a gritty modern day Film Noire style crime drama, with some heavy comic book elements. Nothing even remotely supernatural about it.

Oh.

Well you gotta take these movies with a grain of salt. :p

Honestly, I play very little video games and people are always upset with it doesn't follow the game or the book or whatever, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is if you enjoy the movie, not how truthful it was to the game/book.

Case in point--Nightwatch

Great movie, great book, not very similar. I like both, but for different reasons.

I guess it's just tough when the source material sets it up for a movie that could be a great showcase for a genre that sees less and less films coming out.
