How old are you?

52

What is your gender?

Male
What is your nationality?

I was born in and reside in the United Staes of America

What would be your favourite movie? Please explain why.
It's really an impossible question to ask anyone who likes movies, there are just too many great movies, but whenever anyone pulls out this question, I reply:
Harold and Maude. I love it because it has a wonderful script that tells a beautiful, yet heart-wrenching untypical love story with a universal message behind it, fleshed out by two of the greatest performances two of my favorite actors ever gave, and given able assistance by one of the greatest soundtracks assembled for a film.

What is your favourite movie genre?
It depends on when you ask me. There were years when I was younger I watched nothing but comedy. Same with horror. Lately I watch a lot of dramas.

Do you enjoy going to your local cinema or renting/ watching movies regularly?

I enjoy watching movies regularly- I try to watch 3 or 4 a week- far less than many in this forum average I imagine.

What is your favourite horror movie that you’ve seen within the last few years?

Lately I've watched a lot of Asian horror- Old Boy, Kairo, The Grudge, The Eye. Enjoyed them all. House of 1,000 Corpses was a refreshing surprise. Fido was wonderful.

What part of the movie did you enjoy the most and why?

In Asian horror they use a lot of iconic images- the tall woman with long hair, people that you ust barely see for a second. I respond to those images.

In House of 1,000 Corpses I loved Sid Haig's over the top performance. It was perfect for the story.

Was it scary and if so what made it scary?

Most of the Asian horror films I've watched I did find very spooky and unsettling. However, I'm pretty well adjusted and I don't really get "scared" by movies.

In House of 1,000 Corpses I really appreciated the setup of the whole story- niave city types out in the rural countryside trapped by degenerate yokels. It's an archetypical idea in Americal folklore. I found the story exciting and suspenseful, but again- I wasn't "scared."

Do you feel lighting and camera work is key to a good horror movie?

Lighting and camera work are key to any good movie. You're a film student and you're asking this question? Really?

What level of ‘Gore’ are you interested in?

I'm not "interested" in any level of "gore." Well done gore effects can be effective if they help tell the story. Sticking them in gratuitously is just bad filmmaking. Show the images you need to tell your story to its greatest effect. Leave everything else out.

None

Mild gore

Plenty of gore

Extreme gore

What kind of horror movie creature would you find the scariest?

I guess what's scariest these days are other people. You never know what they will do. Especially if it's someone close to you and they somehow change.

Do you find music gives too much away during a horror movie?

If it's done poorly it can. Do it well and it won't.

Do you enjoy special effects etc. why?

If they help tell the story, yes. They're not a defacto necessity though. Go watch Roman Polanski's "Repulsion." Not a single special effect. Not a single bit of gore. Yet, that's one seriously creepy movie.

What was the most recent horror movie you have seen?

An indie Australian film called "Out of the Blue."

What would you rate it out of 10?

9

Do you prefer reality films or science fiction? Why?

Reality or science fiction? I suppose you really mean do I prefer films based on reality- like slasher films, or films with a supernatural element, like ghosts or demons. Science fiction is a poor choice of terms.

I don't prefer either. I prefer films that tell a good story.

What kind of location would you think best suits a horror movie? Please specify.

Any kind of location best suits a horror movie. Seriously. It's all in the telling.

How would you rate this questionnaire?

I'd give it a 5 out of 10.

Any additional comments?

You seem to think you can take [most popular scary element 1] + [most popular scary element 2] + [most popular level of gore] + [most popular horror location] = successful horror movie. That's understandable because that's the formula most mainstream horror films are churned out with. However, that's backwards. You start with a STORY. A good story. Then you tell it well. The end result may not be a box office blockbuster, but it will be a movie that will stand the test of time.

Absolutely true. Your question "What is your favourite movie genre?" is a redundant question as the rest of your questionaire presupposes that it will be horror. Should the answer be anything other than that, the other questions do not apply.

It's a poor questionare, but that particular question is relevant, IMO.

I'm in market research, and just such a question can be used to see if the person answering is a horror fan, or some other fan, and judge the answers accordingly.

Just being the Devil's advocate here...

Very true Neverending, and must bow to one with more expertise in the area certainly. I was just thinking that in this particular demographic it may be a foregone conclusion. Just a thought.
