Regarding:PURCHASING DIGITAL DOWNLOADS off the internet.
Have you, or would you purchase a digital download horror movie that seemed interesting but had no known name actors in it?
If you would buy a download, what's the least and most you would pay?
If you've actually bought one, what was the process like, and how was the outcome?
Thank you.
No, this is not spam, but it is for indie filmmakers interested in all ways of getting their movie to the people that love the genre.

No, this is not spam
No it's not spam.
It's an unsolicited attempt at market research, conducted on a platform that would be free of charge to yourself, that will no doubt LEAD to spam once you think you have your target market interested.
Here's my answer. I'd like to download the films for free, or to be able to view them in their entirety through streaming.
For those deemed worthy or purchase, I'd pay between 3-6 USD dependent upon the quality.

'It's an unsolicited attempt at market research, conducted on a platform that would be free of charge to yourself"
You're right. I'm going right to the source. The people that actually watch indie horror movies. Would I be better going to a baking site?
"that will no doubt LEAD to spam once you think you have your target market interested."
1000% wrong. I do this for myself, and other film makers who might read it or pass the info to.
"I buy films that were good enough to get a distributer"
Well, since my movie was offered distribution by two distributors, and I turned them both down. You won't see it.
At this particular forum, I keep forgetting how crabby and suspicious so many are.

Well, since my movie was offered distribution by two distributors, and I turned them both down. You won't see it.
So you'll deny giving your film an audience?
Sounds counter-productive.
Have you entered competitions? There are tons of horror film fests out there. I go to those because I know there is a screening process - a level of quality control that you cannot get from a blind download.
If the film is of any level of quality, it will draw a distributer and an audience. If you choose to not have your film distributed then you only have yourself to blame for the fact that you can't get your film seen.
Coming to us directly makes your film seem weak. Is that really how you want to be perceived?
I am honestly trying to help you. I have struggled through the business myself and it has taken a very long time, but I know what I'm talking about. You would do well to listen and not get reactionary when you get called on your self-promotional tactics.
Especially since you only seem to pop by to push your films and don't try to become a regular contributing member of the forum.

Look, I'd probably buy one right now for $7USD if you upload a youtube video punching yourself in the nose, just hard enough to bleed.

In all honesty, I'd probably pay him that much just for the face punching, guy could make a living like that.
Maybe I oughta look into hurting myself in stupid ways on cam - I mean, if I'd pay for it, there'd have to be some small market. Shit, jackass made enough I'm sure, and those guys...pretty tame, eh?

"So you'll deny giving your film an audience? Sounds counter-productive. "
Why did I write this post? I don't mention my movie, or any others. I'm not denying, I'm looking for options.
"If the film is of any level of quality"
Okay. Here's the one rejection letter I've received from a "known" distributor.
Your film was amazing! Definitely one of the best films submitted to us this year. It really feels like it's a grindhouse film from the 80s.
They turned it down because it was shot 30p video.
"Festivals: I go to those because I know there is a screening process - a level of quality control that you cannot get from a blind download.
The way you choose the movies you see, is not the way I would, or ever have. FESTIVALS are a farce. Non-star films are chosen if they're friends with the hosts, and many of the others have some distributor or minor star in or behind them.
"If the film is of any level of quality, it will draw a distributer and an audience. If you choose to not have your film distributed then you only have yourself to blame for the fact that you can't get your film seen."
This is all true, but what does it have to do with this particular post? You say you've struggled in the business, the answers to this post should interest you. How do you know there aren't tons of people that DO and WILL buy digital downloads unless you ask? Asking questions is not a crime. It's not rude or detrimental to your health. You should be happy someone is interested in your opinion.
I personally thought that offering free copies of a movie with excellent reviews would garner a ton of entries, especially since all they had to do was send their name and age (the only reason I need the age is because the movie is not suited for anyone under 18). At this site alone there were 44 views of the post. Over 300 people saw the posts at different forums and in total I got 8 people to enter. How PATHETIC is that? I obviously thought it was me and my movie. But, then I asked many other sites that run contests, what did I do wrong. I found out the truth. NO ONE ENTERS CONTESTS. Did you know that? Because I didn't. Hell, I'm going to start entering contests. My chances of winning are pretty good. All eight entrants got copies of my movie. Which again, has received excellent reviews from everyone that has seen it. The people that have hated it, have found it too disturbing. Yeah, that's a bad thing in a horror movie.
"Coming to us directly makes your film seem weak. Is that really how you want to be perceived?"
This thread has NOTHING to do with any movie. It's to see if "horror" fans will buy digital downloads. That's it. You're all the Gods of horror, the know it all, the people who love anything to do with the genre. So, I asked three really simple questions, and just look at the responses. You should all be so proud of yourselves.
"You would do well to listen and not get reactionary when you get called on your self-promotional tactics. "
This thread is NOT self promotion, it's an inquiry. It's not a difficult or imposing inquiry. It doesn't have anything to do with getting your dick larger or harder or reducing your weight. But, since you brought it up; WHERE in this post am I self promoting? Don't go anywhere else, but read THIS post, what am I promoting?
Do you have a clue as to what you're talking about?
"Especially since you only seem to pop by to push your films and don't try to become a regular contributing member of the forum."
First off, I've only made one movie. WHY would I want to be a regular at this board? Are you people nice? Why don't you go through all the posts at this thread, and put yourself in the poster's position. You all seem pretty IMMATURE. But, if this thread doesn't convince you, go to REAL HORROR FANS, that's a joy. I've put links to that thread at real forums with intelligent people, who are constructive in their replies.
Phalanx: Your original post though semi rude at least answered my question. Your other posts just proved my point as to why anyone would want to be a regular at this board. So, so mature are you.
Please, please never see my movie, because you are DEFINITELY the type of people to ruin the surprises for people who haven't seen it.

So, you come to a forum where you are not a contributing member.
You ask a series of questions that you hope people will answer for your benefit.
You get two replies - Roderick and Phalanx both give you an answer to your question.
So the respondents didn't exactly kiss your feet for allowing them to participate in your market research. You should be happy that anyone bothered responding at all. After all, you aren't exactly a regular member of the forum.
Now look at your most recent post:
"Asking questions is not a crime. It's not rude or detrimental to your health. You should be happy someone is interested in your opinion. "
A bit narcissistic there? Market research is everywhere. Some of them are even willing to pay for the opinions of others. So what makes your questions so special? It's not like they haven't been asked countless times before.
"First off, I've only made one movie. WHY would I want to be a regular at this board? Are you people nice? Well that's a great way to get people here interested in helping you. Insult the entire forum. Works every time, I'm sure.

I don't think so.
"So, you come to a forum where you are not a contributing member."
You know what I say to that, you're a bunch of pussies. Whiney little children. You don't talk to us on a regular basis, so... blah, blah, blah.. GROW UP!
"You ask a series of questions that you hope people will answer for your benefit."
WRONG, many peoples benefits. Any indie filmmaker that might come to this God-Forsaken forum might find the information useful.
"You get two replies - Roderick and Phalanx both give you an answer to your question."
Such nice kind answers they were.
"So the respondents didn't exactly kiss your feet"
They can both kiss my ass. I'll put that up on youtube.
"Market research is everywhere."
This isn't MARKET RESEARCH the way you think about it. It's one film maker asking a bunch of horror fans their opinion. It's not going any further then this board. Get a fucking life.
"So what makes your questions so special?"
I don't know the answers. So they're special to me. But, since you're the expert. What are the answers? How many people DO or Would buy downloadable movies?
"It's not like they haven't been asked countless times before. "
Show me where?
"Well that's a great way to get people here interested in helping you. Insult the entire forum. Works every time, I'm sure."
Like I said after the first two posts. I KEEP FORGETTING WHAT CRABBY, NASTY PEOPLE YOU ARE. I'm pretty sure I'll remember now. I don't want your interest or your help. Because as this post shows (and Real horror fans) many of you are USELESS and childish.

This forum is a community ofmany long time posters who see a multitude of self-promoting jackasses come in and say "watch my stuff" then disappear. Anyone who appears to be doing the same thing will be set upon like a wounded zebra. It isnt rude or immature, it is a result of years of people trying to use this place for free advertising.
In the future, i would recommend looking for posts similar to the one you plan on making to see how it is recieved. Anything that could even remotely be contstrued as self-promotion from a non-regular member is going to get attacked.
So is making itemized posts reacting to everything that was previously posted to you. Its kind of immature. ;)

How many people DO or Would buy downloadable movies?I guess the answer is pretty obvious: No. It wasnt that hard to get out o fall the responses you recieved. A rude response to a question like this is the same as a "Maybe" from the prom queen when a nerd asks her out on a date: NO.
And yet you continue to respond. Do their responses really hurt your feelings so much that you feelthe overwhelming need to continually address each and every thing that is posted in your direction, no matter how meaningless and obviously jokingly they are made?
For the record, Phalanx isnt rude, he is direct and honest. He become srude when pushed (much to our collective amusement)
Roderick is a professional screenwriter with some very impressive recent accomplishments, so you should hangon his every work regarding movies. but he hurt your feelings, so you no longer have any use for him do you?

okay, Vanlutz... where is the film? You have suffered our abuse and keep coming back for more which I appreciate.
I tend to discourage people as much as possible becasue those who are easily discouraged by a few words have no place in this business. It is a hard business and rejection is the norm, not the exception.
I usually don't download, but I'll take a look. And I promise I will review you honestly - it really isn't in me to do anything to the contrary.

I never said I was mature. But, if someone says something to you, nice or nasty, you should respond appropriately.
"Phalanx isn't rude, he is direct and honest. He become rude when pushed (much to our collective amusement)"
His first answer: No it's not spam. It's an unsolicited attempt at market research, conducted on a platform that would be free of charge to yourself, that will no doubt LEAD to spam once you think you have your target market interested.
Sorry man, that's RUDE. Even if it wasn't directed at me, it's not very funny or amusing.
"Roderick is a professional screenwriter with some very impressive recent accomplishments, so you should hang on his every work regarding movies. but he hurt your feelings, so you no longer have any use for him do you?"
What am I chop liver? He didn't hurt my feelings. It's almost impossible to hurt my feelings. I'll answer rudeness with rudeness, I go back to my original response of "I forgot... about horror.com"
"Your mother must be very proud."
As proud as your moms.
"I'm particularly proud that i saw him online at least once after my posts, but he didn't post anything. Perhaps he agreed with my message about not acknowledging the "immature" replies with immature replies..."
Sorry man, I was out all night in Atlantic City (whew hew I broke even. It's like a ghost town down there). BTW: I don't agree.
"okay, Vanlutz... where is the film? You have suffered our abuse and keep coming back for more which I appreciate."
It's not available. This post had nothing to do with my movie. It has to do with an OPTION. I'm not giving my movie away to a distributor for free. YOU could have won a copy by entering the contest. But, you didn't. Sorry. Since I had so few entrants I gave everyone a personally autographed copy. It'll be worth at least a buck on e-bay.
"Speaks volumes about his movie(s), I would think." "It is a hard business and rejection is the norm, not the exception."
I've played music and worked in live theatre for ten years. You live with it. But, my movie is the exception. No, it's not God's gift to cinema, but it's a damn good micro-budget movie.
I purposely set myself up to be criticized, by putting one of those "This movie is so disturbing" loglines on the poster. How much do you hate those? Reviewers do. They chomp at the bit aching to write that mean spirited review telling the arrogant dirt-bag film maker how lame and un-disturbing his picture was. Well everyone including the few people that didn't enjoy it agree, it really is as disturbing as the poster says. Everyone also agrees the lead actor is brilliant, picture-perfect, great, fantastic, and magnificent. Every review is pretty much a carbon copy of the prior. Though there are only eight on-line reviews, there are numerous other e-mails, from friends, strangers I sent the movie to.
One person who disliked the movie wrote an e-mail with this: It's memorable for sure - first-time filmmakers are frequently advised to be controversial, and the amount of thoroughly unpleasant acts herein lingers in the mind. They're not "enjoyable-gross" like slasher murders, but truly unpleasant things.
I would think that speaks volumes about my ONE movie.
