View Full Version : Making a Sale

Since my book is royalty only, the story I recently sold was actually the first paid sale I made. I opened up my email and found five British pounds had been Paypal-ed to me. My reaction was oddly childlike. "Nine dollars! Score! I'm going to buy candy!" instead of "the retail value of this magazine is 20 dollars. Were I not being comped too copies, I would not have been able to purchase one with my fee." So, in a way, it was 49 dollars for half an hour's work, which ain't bad. I'm pretty happy about it. But my girlfriend says nine dollars worth of candy is way the hell too much candy. I'm kind of inclined to agree.

Depends, go to a godiva store and you could walk away with about a quarter of a pound of their cheap stuff.

O, and congrats :)

Thanks. I'm sadly forty minutes from a decent chocolatier. I'm thinking of loading up on energy drink, to have more caffeine to sell more flash fiction to have more caffeine to sell more flash fiction...

selling flash fiction eh? what market might you be purveying that I might get in on some of that action?

I can churn out 500 to a 1000 words in no time :)

If I can write something in genre, I'll go with Postcards from Hell or Flash Fiction online, or Vestal Review if I have a lit ficky prestige project. If I write something experimental and filthy, I'll send it to Polluto, but each issue is themed. The story I got published was for an issue called "Sex and Death in the Age of VHS", which is for experimental, surreal mediabased horror. Next issue of Polluto's theme is something I probably can't swing, but the one with the December deadline might be.

You got paid an advance for Murderland and you don't consider that pay?

No advance. I'm royalty only.

I'm confused- in the first post you say it's advance only...

Wishful thinking/Freudian slip I missed, replacing the word royalty with advance.

Doc - That's awesome. Congratulations. But I agree with Vod - Some chocolate is worth it. ;)

(I still need to get to reading what you sent me, by the way).
