View Full Version : Survival Horror Recommendations for the 360

This thread is really a follow up thread to this thread (http://horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34375&highlight=recs) that I created two months ago. The reason why I'm creating a new thread is that, after some extensive game playing, I've learned that the genre that I'm actually after is Survival Horror as opposed to Sci Fi (and I want to make sure that I'm getting the attention of fellow Survival Horror video game fans).

My favorite games for the 360 so far (in this order):

BioShock - Brilliant graphics, gameplay, plot and story. Can't wait for the movie, either.
Condemned II: Bloodshot - Amazing graphics and compelling storyline. Loved the CSI element and clever choice of melee weapons
Condemned I: Criminal Origins - Definitely more horrific than its sequel, I thought that this was a strong start of the franchise, but I thought the second did it better. Still thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Darkness - Some sketchy UI, but nicely dark and compelling. I hope that they come out with a sequel that works out some of the kinks.

Any other recommendations that fall under Survival Horror?
(I have to give a personal shout out to Mothman and VC for getting me into The Darkness and Condemned games - Thanks, guys)

Des recommended the following in the original thread that seem to fall under Survival Horror:

Prey
Perfect Dark Zero
Timeshift
Dark Sector
Clive Barker's Jericho

Des and Co. - Mind elaborating on the games above? Strengths? Weaknesses? Add to the list? I've read some pretty poor reviews of Clive Barker's Jericho (and if I recall, Freak and Phalanx were disappointed). I guess my big question is, do these flaws outnumber the strengths?

I'm also really intrigued by the new Alone in the Dark game for the 360, though I've read some reviews and complaints that this one also has some execution issues. Has anyone played it? Thoughts?

SO. I'd love to hear your personal Survival Horror Recs. I'm new both to the genre and 360 gaming, so I'm open to anything. Thanks in advance. :D

Perfect Dark Zero is not a horror game at all. Think of it like playing a James Bond game, but replace the characters, with the cartoon mascot characters of ESurance.

Timeshift is also not a horror game. It's dark, but it's Sci-Fi.

Prey I just got back from Gamestop with. It is more horror than the others mentioned.

Jericho is pretty horror oriented, but I haven't played enough of it to elaborate.

Dark Sector is very similar to Gears Of War.

This is why you're one of my favorite people. :D

Did you ever finish Condemned II? What did you think? I'm also curious as to what you think of Prey. That one I've had my eyes on for a while.

Not yet. I'm still working on it. I haven't had a lot of time to play games lately. The only reason I picked these last few up, were because they were cheap and in good condition.

Prey is only $3.99. I'd suggest picking it up anyway.

Condemned II was pretty kick ass.Alot better grpahics and story lines than the first.

Prey really depends on the person.I liked some parts of it and some I didn't.I like how you never really die you just go to some spirit world for a second or two and then start right back where you left off. Some of the weapons are pretty wild looking also.

Some of the levels can get confusing with the roatating rooms and moving floors and such.

I was just watching a video review of Prey and the graphics and UI look great - Does it have a good story/plot that goes along with it? Or is it purse shoot-em-up? I also am leaning toward this game because it was put out by 2K Games, who did BioShock.

Yes it actually has a very good story to it with a little shoot em up thrown in.

I recommended those as first person shooter with a sci-fir or horror twist that you might be looking for, not just survival horror! :)

Something you might want to look into that is pretty gory and horror related is Gears of War.Love that game.Chainsaw someone in half just makes you feel good.

Also some stuff to look forward to inot the future is Gears 2,Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead.Oh and even though I wasn't to impressed by the trailer,Dead Space.

A lot of people weren't impressed by the DS trailer but my brother told me a lot of people thought it was the best game shown at the Gamestop conference.

I've been playing Prey a bit. Interesting story and concepts. Gravity altering. If you get seasick easy, I wouldn't recommend it. The guns and other weapons are neat. And the out of body experience parts are pretty cool.

I wouldn't suggest paying anymore than the $3.99 admission fee though. I made it up to level 7 in about 30 minutes, and it only has 22. So it's pretty short.

Gears Of War is a good game. But I think you're looking for something that isn't just run and gun, correct?

Fallout 3 looks amazing. I'm going to be getting that one.

You may want to check out the Elder Scrolls series. Though not straight horror, it does have some horror elements. Becoming a vampire being one of them.

Left 4 Dead, coming from Valve of Half-Life and Counter Strike fame. I'm waiting impatiently for that one.

I still need to check out the Dead Space trailer. I've seen screens, but no actual videos.

You may also check into Fable and the upcoming Fable II.

There are a lot of good games coming out this year.

-----------------------------EDIT-----------------------------------

I just checked out a trailer for Dead Space. Not too pumped on that one anymore. Reminds me too much of the awful Dino Crisis 3 that they released on PS2 awhile back.

Yeah, becoming a vampire or werewolf was one of the coolest parts in the Elder Scroll games.

Been playing Prey today. I only have two levels left. It's been interesting. Kind of reminds me of the Oddworld series for some reason. I think it's the enviroments.

Very good game, it was actually fun to play through it. BioShock was another fav.

True - But I didn't want to post another "Recommend Me" thread without giving you credit for what you already recommended to me. :)

Any favs amongst these, Des?

Perfect Dark Zero - I played this one briefly and really didn't good too far into it. I liked Perfect Dark (still play it on my N64 when I dust it off) but this one was lacking. I do know quite a few people who dug it though so it's worth a shot.

Timeshift and Prey are both fun but rely heavily on a gimmick to pull it out of the average FPS zone. I thought Prey had more "wow moments" but they're both fun.

Jericho is under-rated and while it didn't live up to the lofty expectations I had set for it, the game was still fun. I would buy it at BB where it seems to be consistently between 20 and 50 percent off.

Dark Sector is gory but it didn't really do anything impressive. Another one of those games that can be fun but really failed to live up to the hype.

Of those games I'd say Prey and Jericho are my favorites but I wouldn't pay $59.99 for either.

Prey - Pretty cool and neat, with some really good sequences. Recommended.

Perfect Dark Zero - Wasted potential. Superb beginning, then goes down. Feels repetitive and lacking atmosphere. Worth a skip.

Timeshift - Awesome fun. Mind-numbing graphics and effects, and environment is very responsive to gameplay. Definitely recommended.

Dark Sector - Again, wasted potential. Plenty of good gory, graphic sequences but overall, not much of a storyline or atmosphere. Worth a skip.

Jericho - Loved it. The middle levels were tough and frustrating, but the atmospheric build-up and the "wow" factor make this one a memorable and fun experience. Absolutely recommended.

LOTS of positive feedback on Jericho. That might have to be the next one that I check out.

Thanks V, Des, Vamp and all for your feedback.

V - What other games do you recommend outside of what we've been listing? What do you generally play when you want to game?

I am a FPS guy. There aren't many Survival-Horror games for the 360 yet, but I am eagerly waiting for three releases - Harker, Left 4 Dead and Resident Evil 5.

Among the FPS stuff, I would recommend :-

Mass Effect - very engaging,
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Arguably one of the best looking games ever made,
Dead Rising - Awesome game, with some really neat levels.

Non-horror :- Call of Duty 4, The Orange Box (a must buy) and Assassin's Creed.

Prey was a GREAT recommendation. I'm finishing it up now, actually (though I wish it wasn't so linear).

I think maybe I'll pick up Jericho next - the graphics that I've seen for it look fantastic.

And on the topic of games yet to come...

We've been talking about Dead Space - Personally I think that the trailer looks AWESOME, so I'm pretty psyched about it, though I'm not sure if I can afford the $60 right now. Left 4 Dead looks great, too. I think I'll wait on reviews before picking up either of them.

Couldn't really get into Dead Rising; I thought that the controls were really awkward, the saving system weird, and it took far too long to load between chapters.

I'm petty psyched for Left 4 Dead, though. I'm player Jericho on the 360 now and it's OK.

Pick up F.E.A.R. if you want something a bit creepy.

Left 4 dead was a great idea. Very fun and cool looking but only for so long. I loved Dead Rising now THAT was fun! ALl the extra stuff you could do and the size of it was awesome. I hated the dudes in the environmental suits tho they were cheap.

VC - I need to pick up F.E.A.R. - The ads for it just look so fantastic.

There's a Dead Rising 2 (http://www.deadrising2.net/) coming out in August - I hope that it improves on some of the awkwardness of the first game.

Was just reading through this thread and was wondering if anyone that owns a 360 thought RE 5 kinda stunk?

The game is nowhere near the original as far as the fear factor goes, and twice now I've finished it and been deep in the Mercenary Missions and my saves have been wiped.

I really hope, if Capcom does indeed do another RE game, they take it back to basics and bring back the scare factor and puzzles that made the first one so great.

RE5 was basically just a FPS, and that's not a bad thing, if that's what you're looking for in a game. I want the scare factor back.

RE 2 scared the shit out of me when i first played it. Great tension within the enviorments. Anyone play Alan Wake. If so how is it? I was hoping for it to be creepy but not sure.
