While I agree that women are survivors and the fact that they're the only ones left at the end of the film may indicate the primordial sense that women will prevail.
However,
The social and physical rammifications and implementations forced upon women by the popular patriarchy are the deplorable. The media is the greatest enemy woman has ever had to face. Note that I said media, not art. The media has been unkind to art as well but at the same time created new outlets for artistic minds. So the media is a tricky entity.
Lets look, though, at the other role of women in horror: the domineering and often insane mother.
Psycho
Friday 13th (to a small degree)
Aliens (even)
Those are only three, but there countless others. The role the mother plays is that she creates the flawed son, sons, or offspring. She's the greatest threat and monster in the film although she's seldom really apart of the movie or whatever.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I could add "The Ring" to that too. I'm not going to, because I'm unsure. Someone tell me why or why not, if you don't mind.

to be honest i always viewed the entire slasher sub-genre as throw away to begin with. when i rent a slasher film im pretty sure i'm not going to be seeing a whole lot of in depth character development. Lets be honest here, we all watch slashers to see people die, and its my opinion that because of this 90% of the charactors are throw away to begin with. So if your just going to kill somone why not up the anty and make her a permiscuios teenager with a great rack? I mean really on their most basic level, slasher films are little more than exploitation flicks and the charctors (especially women) are depicted in such a manner.

That's for damn sure. Hell, we're better off then we were 20yrs. ago. It's due to our insistence on human rights that allows for a more global perspective on women's rights.

I do agree with Sam about the "evil daddy" thing. hehe Stepfather, right? My favorite evil Daddy. and in the end, it is his stepdaughter who kills him, but up until that point, he does a good job of beating the fuck out of her mom. I have a bit of a different view on physical contact between men and women than other females do. Since I want to be treated equaly, I'm willing to scrap with a guy and NOT start all of that "OMG you hit me and I'm a woman" crap. I support the idea of women becoming physicaly stonger in order kick men's asses, when needed. Taking a few punches is the price of being equal, and I'm not afraid to pay it.

Well, I never hit ANYBODY unless they assault me first. I'm strictly a defensive fighter. Oh, well, there was that time I ripped my ex's shirt off of his back. Actualy, I did that quite a few times. Yes, because I had seen my Mother's expieriances with men, and knew how sleazy they could be. I saw lots of times where she was taken advantage of by them. A lot of her boyfriends would actualy try to get me to have sex with them while she was in the bathroom, in the kitchen, busy or whatever. And I was only 14 or 15 at the time too. Of coarse, when I told her, she would dump them, only to find another one who seemed to think in the same disgusting way as the last. 98% of them were sleazy like that. She was always saying "Are there no decent men in this world who wont try to screw my daughter when I'm not looking?" I must say that is the reason I choose to be celibate.

PS As for your boyfriend who "loves" you so much, I'm sure that if saaaay......Angelina Jolie walked up to him and offered to give him a blow job, he would scarf up on the oppertunity without even thinking twice about how much damage it would do to your relationship with him. You know what?THats really sad. The fact that youve had problems with guys so you think they are all not loyal and would cheat on you and break you in a heart beat. I understand you point of view and felt the same way about women (still do sometimes)
Ive been nothing but the nice guy, who treats women like princesses every day. Only to be cheated on and broken more times than i can count. Believe me nice guys ARE out there. And they WOULD treat you like you deserve to be treated. But youll never notice them becuase they're not the bad boy, the attention getter, they are the quiet guys in the corner worshiping you from afar and youll probably go through your whole life never knowing it.

Well, thank you for your response. What you say makes a lot of sense and all. If women have done you like that, then you are entitled to hold some resentment towards them. THAT is a real reason for a guy to have problems with women, not because he feels them to be inferior. I'm sorry that your girlfriends have cheated on you. Ive never actualy had a guy cheat on me, but Ive seen them do it to my friends or family. Your right about the "bad boy" thing. It seems that no matter how much I would like to be with a good guy, they never seem to have any appeal to me. I don't know, maybe I'm just a masochist. Maybe your the same because you seem to always get involved with the bad girls. Who knows. I'm pretty happy with being celibate and drooling over famous men. LOL Besides, my son is the focas of my life, not some guy. Anyway, you really said some meaningful things. I can tell that you have a good head on your shoulders. :)

Listen, I know where SFF is coming from. I've had some SERIOUSLY bad situations with men (nuff said). The reaction is almost a type of shock. It just takes a breakthrough. Yelling at her is not going to change anything. In fact, it's just going to make it worse.
Sometimes it just takes someone. My ex was great. He was wonderful. We're not together any more because he lived very far away. For awhile I was really angry at him, but then I realized how great he was. My point is, you can't be told that men aren't all evil. You have to see it.

There's a book that deals with this topic that's somewhat of a classic in horror film theory; it's called Men, Women, and Chain Saws, by the feminist Carol Clover. She's also a talking head in a lot of horror documentaries, especially that great one called American Nightmares IFC did two Halloweens back.
She's the one who coined the term "Final Girl" to describe the last girl in every slasher movie, and now it's used in every serious book about horror. Definitely worth checking out.

I understand, Sam. Which is the same reason why I am reluctant to watch shows like The Supranos, or movies like Raging Bull, where women are treated like garbage cans and slapped and called whore or bitch every five minutes. I don't like movies which suggest that women are evil because they want to get through one day without being discriminated against.

I think horror needs more women writers and directors; Anne Rice has moved further and further into fantasy, and Poppy Z. has never had any of her works translated into film.
I LOVE exploitaion, don't get me wrong, but for too long horror has had a "boys only" attititude---most of the titilation has dealt with women in peril, or worse (branded, whipped, etc). I think it's wrong to blow this up and say all horror movies humiliate and degrade women, but I think it does reflect the twelve-year-old boy mentality of the genre as a whole.

blah blah blah...
there are two types of women in the slasher. theres the slut with the big boobs and cut off jean shorts that does the majority of the screaming (in bed and while being chased by the killer); and then there is the intelligent, strong-willed survivor that ends up either escaping the killer or kicking his ass and then escaping him.
I feel its a good representation of how women are in society too. There are the ones that dont bring any respect to themselves and endure degradation for attention and survival. Then there are the ones that endure all opposition and prevail in situations the may be difficult using their intelligence and other capabilities. And who knows, she might have big boobs too. Who says that the intelligent survivor cant be attractive?
I actually respect women far more than I respect men just because most of them that I have encountered have used their brains more than men ever will. Unfortunately there are also those "bimbos" out there that give other women bad names.
