This is the place for those little things you had no expectations for, and wound up finding something you love; Like the Usual Suspects for me. We went to the theater and saw it because we were bored and hell, it had that guy from the Ref (Kevin Spacey)

Little did we know it would change how we saw movies in general, but especially how I would View Kevin Spacey.

I bring this up because I rewarded myself for my first paycheck from my new job by purchasing Martini fixens. Ive been craving a nice dry vodka martini for months now. so Lily and I hit the liquor store, and i wanted to keep the budget low. There was a bottle of vodka on sale for 12 bucks, a polish brand called Luksusowa, tripple distilled potato vodka. i though, why not? the price is right (it came with 2 nips free, too), i have been pleased with every other polish vodka i have tried, and i have always wanted to try the classic POTATO vodka. So its chilled, im watching Timeline and setting up Bioshock, and i take a sip. holy SHit, this stuff is GOOD.

So, what did you "settle" for and wind up loving?

Aha!

I remember not being interested in seeing "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie" in the 80's, and someone said, "Hey, you should check it out...I think you'd enjoy it!" So I sat down and watched it and HEY! Whattaya know, it was pretty darn good! So I was happy and now I own it.

40 Year Old Virgin. Went in predisposed to hate this fucker, gun to head by girlfriend. Left laughing my ass off. Unfortunately, subsequent viewings weren't as strong, but there are still some scenes I'll find memorable for a while. And the co-worker banter is still dead on.

I cant remember what the origional movie was - but my wife and i were all set to see a film that was advertised as still playing on the theatre website - and found that it wasnt.

we were pissed but went to see another film we knew nothing about on a whim...

it was Spirited Away. I absolutely loved the film.

same thing happened a few years later and we ended up seeing The Matador - loved that one too.

Blades of Glory. I was getting a bit tired of Will Ferrell Comdedies, but now it's one of my favourites.

About 20 years ago - renting out a film on the reduced 50p shelf- taking it home, watching it and loving it..

The film was called STREET TRASH - i was alreaady a huge horror fan but i never heard of that film or anyone involved with it...

I always think of that film of one of the best ones I discovered on my own...

The vodka thing reminded me that I settled for my now favorite wine, Red Zeppelin. But it was a New York wine and now that I moved I can't find it anywhere :(

Hairspray. A pretty funny film, and I usually don't like musicals.

Rushmore - never heard anything about it - went and saw it and it restored my faith in films.

(i'm also discovering how old people say 'oh i know its going to rain because my knee/shoulder/elbow is hurting' is freaking true - my broken collar bone is in agony because of some weather system moving into NY today - arrgghhh)

Poor Monkey. *gentle HUG*

...

Just recently The Wizard of Gore remake was a surprising success in the Chrono household. The boyfriend and I expected it to be abysmal, but it was a great surprise. I know I've already recommended it, but I will CONTINUE to recommend it until everyone sees it. :D

Also, I'd say that American Beauty was a surprising discovery for me. I was a senior in high school and I had watched it before its critical hype. It was the first movie that I had ever seen that actually made me close read film and consider it part of an art form. It's interesting thinking back on it - That movie honestly affected the way that I look at films now and really inspired me as a movie snob.

Prior to that, there was Pulp Fiction. I had heard the hype about it, but it was the kind of movie that's best experienced through viewing. I was still in high school and it was like nothing that I had every seen before (ie Tarantino specifically did NOT use mood music and instead used sound track to create mood - a technique that either I had never noticed or never seen before in movies).

Okay, another discovery:

32 year olds do not have the endurance of a 22 year old who drinks frequently.

As a result, I no longer have the vodka (dumped out what i didnt drink the night before), and I know that my wife loves me enough to take care of my dumb ass when I drink too much...

The nice thing is that i discovered when i was about 25 that Chicken McNuggets of all things make me feel better when i have a hangover, so I downed a 20 piece last night :)

Ginger Beer.

First time I heard of it I thought it sounded horrible. A fizzy drink made from the stuff those little guys are made of? Now I'm hooked on the stuff.

this year at the fan-con we met Sean Austin .. super nice down to earth guy.

so on Saturday - while waiting to get into the theatre to see Spamalot - I popped into a discount book store next door to kill some time - and i found a book : There and Back Again : an actors Tale - by Sean Austin.

I wasn't expecting much but i thought the guy was cool - i'll check it out.

I'm only in 100 pages or so and i have to say already - it's one of the best - if not the best - book i've read about the business of film. (and we havent even gotten into the Lord of the Rings stuff yet.

interesting guy .. someone who's actually learned and matured along the way.

He's al;ways struck me as someone who has his shit together. He apparently took the Samwise roll epretty seriously, to the point that he kept an eye on Eliga Wood the whole time they were filming.

Amazing, too for a guy who's parents were both celebrities themselves.

Not the geezers around where I live. They start hitting the triple martinis and scrip meds around 8 in the morning, play a round of golf, hit the clubhouse, get in their jags, hit a telephone pole or pedestrian, off to the lounge by 6, more meds and a cigar and then a quiet evening home with the wife- drinking and snorting coke.

Does it have much about the film Toy Soldiers?

he mentions it a couple of times - as a movie he's done - no particulars.

he mentions the goonies a bit - and Where the Day Takes you - and a lot about Encino Man (which wasn't a good time for him.)

The book is devoted to Lord of the Rings but he gives a good deal of background information and gives a lot of insight to the Hollywood machine..

I was hoping it would have some stories about R Lee Emery, Andrew Divoff and Louis Gosset Jr. Sounds like it'd be a decent read anyways.
