I don't have Showtime...So, I just rented Season 1 ..and I must say it's a fantastic show. It's dark and very entertaining. The writing is brilliant and the acting is superb. Michael C. Hall owns the role of Dexter. I'm gonna rent Season 2 this week.

i haven't really watched an episode save the final episode with the ice truck killer, although i have been listening in. very interesting show, especially when the person watching it went to school for the express reason of being a profiler (criminal justice and psychology).

Bree has a knack for the kind of thing the show is about, and it seems like it was written just for her.

i always get a kick out of this response ..

the guy was an excellent, intuitive, caring cop and that pisses off people because they are on Dexters side :)

the challenge of the show is to appreciate and root for both - because in their own way they are both very essential and effective and the tension between them was great TV

i was totally convinced that lila was going to disappear and show back up in season 3 or 4 - so when she has a meeting in paris i was like - damn didn't expect that

Don tget me wrong, Doakes was a good person, just a mouthy jackass. And intuition or not, he was an asshole, and stepped over quite a few personal boundaries with dexter. He completely deserved the head-butt. :D

But he didnt really deserve to be blown up.

Lila, on the other hand, deserved a worse end than she got, but I'm glad he just got it over with.

I didn't I felt he had it coming, he was an asshole...

Sure you can defend him in saying he was right to be following Dexter, but he was doing it on his own time with no legal reason which is also stalking... so he was a pest to me...

The chick in series 2 annoyed me more though, I also thought she was a weak villain in the end.

Maybe its just me, but I thought Season 2 was a marked step down from the first one...still DAMN good, loved every second of it, but it seemed to be missing something.

I guess I preferred Dexter happy and at the top of his game - plus the whole dynamic between him and the Ice Truck Killer (especially before the reveal) was badass.

Season 2 just didn't have the same spark. Lundy was a great addition (was anyone else reminded of a hornier Dale Cooper?) and I loved all the Doakes stuff, but Lila was just annoying as sin. Hated her from start to finish and wish she would have met a far more violent fate.

Anyway, I'm pumped for Season 3 - I have to wait for DVD though, so I'm glad Season 2 didn't really end on a cliff-hanger.

I think that is part of the brilliance of the show, the seasons end in a tight little package. That shows a great deal of confidence in their product; if you think you need to bait people into the next season, you end it on a cliffhanger. if you make something so good that people will be chomping at the bit for the next season during the finale without something hanging over their head, then you have something great, you know it, and that will be reflected in the continuing quality fo the show.

Best fucking show ever, kinda hated to see Doakes go but damn what a way to go, but I was glad he killed that bitch Lila, what a fucking twat she was...I do have to agree with Vamp, I thought the first season was better, not to say that the second season wasn't any good cause I thought it was great but I just liked the story of the first season better...What tripped me out was the first time you see Rudy/The Ice Truck Killer when he was in the hospital room with Tucci the night watchmen and Debra, I said damn that guy looks like Richard Ramirez The Night Stalker, I bet he will end up being the Ice Truck Killer, and sure enough lol.

I'm glad season three has started and I'm anxious to see how it will stand up to the first two seasons.

Has anyone read any of the books? I've been wanting to pick them up and read them, I just haven't had the time to yet.

I was a bit disappointed by the finale actually. I thought certain scenes needed to be longer and drawn out more. The pacing felt rushed, like too much was happening for one episode. I kind of felt like ever since his new "family" came into it, not all of them were gonna make it through.
I'm wondering if he'll keep looking after Rita's kids?
...and all that "I don't want this to be my life" stuff, that's pretty much gonna be flushed now eh? I just hope the character doesn't lose his way 'cos he hasn't really gone into "bad guy" territory yet...there's still some hope in him to be human, I don't want that to have been crushed completely.
Even though Rita's character has been admittedly getting on my nerves...for all the "support" she offered him she seemed to be a judgmental bitch over a lot of little things...I still actually felt really sad for him...the family dynamic was working for him.

But yes, it'll definitely be interesting to see what dark path this twist takes the character down...

Wasn't season 4 a great pick-up after #3 though???

I absolutely LOVE this show.

Within the last few years I have been watching many of the past and current premiere shows like:

True Blood
Californication
The Sopranos
Six Feet Under
The Wire
Entourage
Dexter
Hung

Out of all of these shows, nothing has hooked me quite like Dexter has. I love Michael C. Hall as the main character. I gained some familiarity with him since I watched all of Six Feet Under before I started in with this. His character is amazingly deep and the show has great subplots to go along with a supreme cast. Every season seems to impress me. It has a really bright future and I will definitely continue to watch. I am really excited for the season 5 opener tonight.

Still faithfully watching this. The show remains strong as ever. This season Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks (Tom's son) are the psychos Dexter must defeat.

With Dexter, The Walking Dead, and American Horror Story running at the same time, I am in television horror heaven.:D

So far.. Season 6 blows away last season. Season 5 was sub-par, IMO. I really dig the faith/religion aspect of Season 6. Edward James Almos, Mos Def and Colin Hanks are exceptional in their roles. I wasn't a big fan of the Julia Stiles character Lumen. The Jordan Chase character was alright but I still consider Season 5 to be the worst season of Dexter. Can't wait for this Sunday.....DOOMSDAY!!!

What? How can you say that? I love this season. It may not be as good as the 1st, 2nd and 4th but its way better then the 3rd and 5th. The villain is great and i'm loving the story. Last season i was so bored.

I'm finding it quite predictable.

**********spoiler alert.....spoiler alert**************

God's honest truth.....after the first episode where Geller was introduced, I turned to my wife and said" He's like Dexter's dad....he's dead and they will find his body in a later episode." And I just don't find Tom Hanks kid too engrossing. Throw the whole incest plot into the mix and.....meh. I'm hoping for a killer finale this Sunday.

All that being said, I still find this show better than most anything else on the boob tube.

I actually didnt see that coming at all to be honest but i get why that would bore you if you did. I think Tom Hanks is doing a great job as the villain though, im very surprised. Especially with last seasons very lackluster villain. I will agree with you on the incest thing.....WTF.

Still think it was a bit of a contrived season. I don't see the young Hanks following in his dad's footsteps in the acting department. But interested where it's going next year.

Yeah he's definitely not as good as his father but he's a different kind of actor and has said that he wants to do different things. I think he did a really good job with the role he was given though.

Hi :)

What does everyone think of Dexter?

I've watched every season to date. I think the first two seasons are unbeatable, the story is so good and original. The rest of the seasons are decent, especially with Trinity but does not match up to the first two.

Nonetheless, I will remain a fan til the end.

Yeah I agree, I've seen it all, but only the first two seasons standout to me - I would rate it 10/10.

But now it just seems like its being dragged out, they should have ended it on a high note. It's becoming 'one of those' series.

Having said that, it is still better than most of the stuff they have on TV nowadays.

My husband is a big fan. I watch it off and on. My interest was piqued when I saw Jennifer Carpenter and Julie Benz were in it. Not my favorite, but it's entertaining and well-written.

I absolutely love Dexter!

A serial killer who kills serial killers. What an incredible concept. A man who has the need and want and capabilities to kill has the heart enough to know who deserves to die. It is well written and very well put together. I have been a huge fan thru the whole series and cant wait to see whats in store next.

My favorite season though will always be the first one. When Dexter learns about his past and is in search of the Ice Box Killer which turns out to be his brother lol Best Season!!! Just the butchery done on the bodies has me wanting more. What a creepy concept and so well done, I loved it lol

Just finished watching the whole series, some thoughts:

SPLOILERS BELOW:

-Miami is the serial killer capital of the world. How does this city get by when serial killing is so common?
-Dexter always seems to get caught by the season's main villain, but all he ever has to do is wiggle his way out of the ropes. This is lazy writing. It's much better when he outwits his opponents instead of just getting lucky.
-I guess a lot of people disliked Lumen, but I thought she was fine. Dexter and Lumen's relationship felt a lot more plausible than Dexter and Hannah. I never bought the chemistry between Dexter and Hannah.
-Debra really grew on me as the seasons progressed. She was a bit annoying for the first few seasons as the sassy cop sister, but eventually her character fell into place. So much so that she becomes a major reason to watch the show. The last show of the seventh season was heartbreaking and the series finale was devastating. Her character really goes through hell and back.. and hell and back.. and hell and back...
-The original finale which implied Dexter had died would have been better than Showtime's forced 'lumberjack' tacked-on ending. I see the show as Dexter having died since that was the creator's intent.
-What's kinda funny is Elway must have ended up believing that Dexter and Hannah made their escape and lived happily ever after. He would have seen the boat accident as staged.
-as with almost every show and movie, the computer 'hacking' is pretty laughable and unconvincing. Again, lazy writing.
-The best 'season' villain was easily the Ice Truck Killer, but I didn't think any of the season villains were bad. If I had to rank them, I would put them in this order:
1: Ice Truck Killer (season 1), by far the best. In the series, the villains are never simply the foe that Dexter has to overcome, but a functioning murderer that forces Dexter to confront some aspect of himself and grow. Brian Moser was not only the series most gruesome and creative killer, he was also the most formidable, the most intelligent, the most threatening, and also the one that induces the greatest change in Dexter as a person. Moser as a villain also had the best natural symmetry to Dexter as a part of the story.

2: Miguel Prado (season 3), Amazing performance by Jimmy Smits, the best I have seen by him. An intimidating and complex and occasionally sympathetic villain, terrifically captured by Smits. A lot of great moments between Dexter and Prado. One of the series' most plausible villains.

3: Trinity Killer (season 4), Fantastically portrayed by Lithgow. A very scary killer, like Prado complex but much less sympathetic, a fully realized human monster. One of Lithgow's best roles. He generates a lot of tension, and even when he is not in the scene his presence is felt. He does more to develop Dexter as a character than any other antagonist except Moser, and that doesn't even include his last shocking murder, which was a hell of a series cliffhanger.

4: Isaac Sirko (season 7), Sirko had some great moments, particularly the Colombian bar. A very intimidating antagonist for Dexter for awhile, but definitely lessened as a threat in the last few episodes of this season, much to that season's disadvantage. A good physical performance by Stevenson, although I couldn't tell whether the character was supposed to have a native Ukrainian accent or English accent, it seemed to change from scene to scene. A good antagonist but I think the role could have been written into this season a bit better.

5: Oliver Saxon (season 8), A pretty scary and capable killer. Great crazy eyes from Darri Ingolfsson. This season should have had more cat and mouse games between Dexter and Saxon, and less drama about Hannah. He was basically a more plausible and less sensational version of Brian Moser, and had the same kind of story symmetry with respect to Dexter.

6: Travis Mitchell (season 6), The most over-the-top killer of the series, and the least believable, but not because of Colin Hanks, who did a good job with a wildly written role. A fun killer, but implausible and written like a bunch of serial killer cliches squeezed together. There were some amazing kills though, especially the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse scene. This character was too unhinged and irrational to be really scary as a villain or as a threat to Dexter.

7: Jordan Chase (season 5), He had his moments. He was vile enough, but never really felt like a match for Dexter. He functioned as a decent plank to explore the relationship between Lumen and Dexter, which was the real draw of this season.

I don't consider season 2 as having a 'villain'. While Dokes was certainly the antagonist, he is not a villain, so I don't include him in this list.

-All in all, Dexter was a great show and very enjoyable, not flawless but well worth watching.

My favourite TV show since SCTV.

As NEWB said - even the 'weaker' seasons are better than anything else out there - mainly due to the enjoyable characters.

I really miss it now that it's gone - the opening theme really gets to me when i hear it now .. makes me miss the show terribly.

I hope they do a movie version at some point..

Absolutely love DEXTER and think it's one of the better shows on the tube, even if it's off now. Got Season 8 a couple of days ago and will probably start on next day off. Only Season I wasn't crazy about was Season 6...found a lot of it contrived, but every season so far been really good, especially, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

We finished Season 8 last night and while still good, the show is really running out of steam and the ending was sort of...blah. Good thing it's done and going out on something of a high note.
