Those of you who have Comcast On Demand already know that it's mostly crap. However, occassionaly they have some offerngs that are worth checking out.

As Chrono already posted, they are showing a bunch of Asian Extreme films, including Oldboy.

http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35090

Check in the Sundance section

They currently also have some other films worth checking out:

The Devil's Backbone
Beyond Re-Animator
Deathwatch (2002)
Escape From NY

And selections from the 2007 After Dark Horrorfest:
Unearthed
Crazy Eights

I guess they're actually trying to get folks to stay home and watch some movies during the Summer slump.

I just watched the 30 days dust to dust, it actually drew me in very interesting. I liked how they showed the "emotion" on the characters realization of the "outbreak".
Also I just started "Are you scared" It's a Saw rip of major and its about to get the stop button.

In the Sundance section:

Art School Confidential

Wonderful little indie film that manages to be murder mystery, satire of the art world, young romance- all at the same time, and all effectively. One of the best mixes of comedy and drama I've seen with spot on performances from John Malkovich, Jim Broadbent, Steve Buscemi (in a role that's strangely uncredited, as it's a fairly major role) and many others.

Really fun film.

In terms of the other HorrorFest films, "Wicked Little Things" is a nice little movie if you're looking for a decent horror flick (though not perfect), and "Gravedancers" wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

The freaked out film from the director of The Grudge is seriously wack. It's brilliant. The story of a crew filming a recreation of a mass murder in a hotel that happened 35 years ago careens through different realities, locations and perspectives that end up fitting together seamlessly... I'm not sure exactly what it all means but it's told magnificently. I was even about ready to hate the ending which at one moment seemed like a cop out- but then it pulled it all back with the biggest WTF in the entire film.

The lead actress playing the lead actress and the actor playing the director were particulaly great.

No it isn't. Penny Dreadful was a pathetic little movie. The main character was a whiney little bitch who was impossible to like. Her therapist was the worst therapist EVER. The rest of the characters were expendible- literally. There were no surprizes in the plot. It followed formula completely. Writing was banal. Production valuyes and treatment were about on the level of a Lifetime movie.

This is one of the worst movies I've seen in a while.

...

There's actually a bunch of fantastic movies now on Sundance On Demand...

One's I've Seen (and recommend)

Oldboy (for whomever hasn't seen this film, it's an iconic Asian horror must)
The Friedmans - Fascinating and creepy documentary about a father and son who were accused of child abuse in a fairly disputed case. The documentary tries to take a neutral look, showing both testimony for and against the parents. Pretty dark and awful content, but a really interesting film.
Wristcutters: A Love Story - I hate the title of this movie. Obviously trying to be controversial, this is just an eccentric look of the afterlife for suicides; a strange little love story with Patrick Fugit and the ridiculously hot Shannyn Sossamon. Also with Tom Waits and has a killer soundtrack

Ones that I really want to see

Assassination of Richard Nixon
Murderball - Documentary of a paraplegic rugby team
Right At Your Door - Horror movie of panic taking over LA after a dirty bomb is dropped.

Good to know; I was skeptical at first as I was concerned that it would have a xenophobic inflated anti-terrorist agenda (with the vehicle of the dirty bomb being dropped).

As long as it truly focuses on panic and human horror, I think it should make a good film. We'll have to check it out sometime this weekend.

Wristcutters: A Love Story

A whimsically profound story that takes place in a purgatory world where suicides live. What would a world be like that was inhabited only by people who had comitted suicide? It's a pretty funny world, actually- even if nobody ever smiles. This is the driest dark comedy I've ever seen, and the three leads who find themselves on a road trip in this world, each for their own reasons, travelling in a rundown car with a black hole in the floor, are perfectly cast. I particularly enjoyed Eugene, a young musician of Russian ancestry who comitted suicide by pouring beer onto his electric guitar and electrocuting himself.

Tom Waits turns up, as does the guy who played Jerry on ER, and the lead of that awful Fearnet movie Catacombs. Turns out she can really act.

One of the best and most varied assembled soundtracks I've come across, with music by Tom Waits, Artie Shaw, Gram Parsons, Screaming Lord Sutch, Del Shannon, Joe Meek and a trio of tunes by Gogol Bordello, a post-modern Balkan cabaret outfit that add immeasurably to the atmosphere.

Watch this if you get a chance.

...

I just watched Saibogujiman kwenchana (I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497137/) - Sundance Channel On Demand

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/im-a-cyborg-but-thats-ok.jpg

It's the new movie from Korean director Chan-wook Park (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0661791/), acclaimed director of Oldboy and the Vengeance Trilogy.

I started a thread about this in the Asian Movie forum, but for a bit of background: The story is about a young woman who is convinced that she is a cyborg and as such is committed to a sanatorium where she refuses to eat (because, as a cyborg, food would "break her"). She meets a young schizophrenic who falls in love with her and does all he can to make her eat.

As expected, the direction was clean, beautiful, whimsical... Park is definitely an experimental and playful director and a visionary.

However, it was definitely slow at times and the ending was a bit drawn out (an issue that I find with a lot of Asian cinema, Oldboy and The Red Shoes included).

The high points: Very much like Lady Vengeance, Park creates vivid characters who make this movie colorful. It's playful and charming, though purposefully muted which took away from its absurdity at times. What it boils down to is a quixotic love story that is absolutely adorable and ultimately awww worthy.

In a way, it's almost like Happiness of the Katakuris (minus the darkness) meets Amalie.

That being said, I'm happy that directors like Park are out there, always experimenting and giving the audience something different. Definitely check this movie out, though I thought it was a bit more flat than I expected it to be (giving the plot, story, and characters).

Backwoods

Really excellent thriller about 2 couples vacationing in the North Basque country in Spain who get caught up in a bad scene. Gary Oldman helps a lot.

I watched this on NE's recommendation and I have to say that I second that rec. This was a brilliantly done, subtle horror film that definitely plays with the audience's expectations (I wasn't sure if it was going to turn out to be a supernatural movie or if it was going to turn out to be just plain urbanoia; the film tread a nice balance between the two genres).

I agree about Oldman; he was brilliant and it was great to see him do something indie.

Good little movie.

Really? I didn't care for it at all. I mean it was well made....Oldman was great as always, but I felt the ending was really poorly handled.

Also, I think I had the wrong idea of what kind of movie it was going to be. I thought around the middle of the movie that it was going to be a werewolf flick (complete with mysterious girl chained up, paranoid locals, and noticing the bright moon)...so imagine my disappointment to find it was nothing of the sort.

Can't say the performances were bad, they weren't...but the story just did nothing for me.

Currently on Fearnet, this is one of Ghosthouse Underground's indie flicks (and the only one that I've seen so far). It's definitely a decent homage to zombie flicks, using high school and prom as fodder for the zombie apocalypse. It drags at times, but overall thoroughly enjoyable. Definitely check it out. Intensity Part 1 & Intensity Part 2.

Two part TV movie adapted from the same Dean Koontz book that High Tension took as its source.

It's very apparently a TV movie, with the same lack of style you find in most, and the same range of TV actors. John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox from Scrubs) stars as the killer. The story is told in a straightforward manner, with none of the mind games & tricks that High Tension used, but also not nearly the level of brutality, violence, tension or gore.

As High Tension only adapted the first half of the book, it's interesting to see what else was in the book. Also worth a look if you're a McGinley fan. Other than that, only mildly interesting.

Memories of Murder (2003)

Korean horror film directed by Joon-ho Bong.

Never heard of this guy before but I'm REALLY glad I watched this. Not your typical Asian horror movie at all. No tall women with long hair. No creepy kids with big eyes. No ghosts.

This is the story surrounding the investigation of Korea's first serial killer case. I don't know where to start here... Perhaps by mentioning the directorial finesse of Joon-ho Bong. He straddles a line between a very dark humor and deadpan seriousness with the assurance of a master. Expert at creating tension and surprise.

At first we're presented with the world's worst criminal investigative team. They trample evidence. They arrest the wrong people and torture confessions out of them. They plant evidence. When a detective from Seoul joins them on the case, they are jealous of his more sophisticated methods and try and discredit him.

There's a real visual flair to this film as well, along with some stunning visual metaphores. Many key scenes take place in the rain at night and they're shot with perfection.

The lead actor, Kang-ho Song, turns in such a nuanced performance I was awed. He portrayed his role, at first that of a bumbling corrupt cop, that transforms into a very sympathetic caring character. It was probably the best performance I've seen in an Asian movie (what ones I've seen, of course).

The story itself moves along at a brisk pace, always kept me interested, and revealed some deft touches, symbolism and depth.

Needless to say- I was extremely impressed.

Wow - I can't believe I've waited so long to see this movie... The claymation monsters are AWESOME.

Also - If I had seen it when I was younger I probably would have found it pretty scary (or at least enjoyed it as much as I did stuff like Little Monsters).

ALSO: The scene where the demon reaches out from under the bed and grabs her foot... I TOTALLY saw that seen when I was younger - just that scene and for a while I would run quickly when I was in front of beds and couches so that a hand wouldn't grab me... I've always wondered what movie that was from. Huh.

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Can't believe that I waited so long to watch it. Based on the fact that it's an inside joke around here, I was expecting the movie to be simply awful, but it was a blast - I LOVED the claymation demons and the special effects. DEFINITELY cheesy, but that was part of the charm. Plus it was more gory than I expected, especially since our heroes are kids. If I had seen it when I was younger, it definitely would have scared me. I would watch it again and recommend to people... [rec] (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038988/) (2007) (though - baha - the description says "from the people who brought you Quarantine") - It's the Spanish infection film that everyone's been talking about!
May (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/) (2002) - One of my favorite indie horror flicks ever. Fantastic character piece. Tortured and awesome.
Ju-On (The Grudge) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364385/) (2002) - The iconic Japanese original
The Cottage (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465430/) (2008) - From the makers of Severance, here is another British horror comedy, but definitely more subtle and favored more by people around here - I liked it and will most likely be checking it out
Jaws, Jaws II, and Jaws III - They really need no introduction
Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0125659/) (1997) - The Spanish original that inspired the insipid Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise... Definitely quite a bit better, though if I recall the plot rambles a bit and the "point" loses a bit of its intended punch
The Sixth Sense (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167404/) (1999)

And even three of my Horrorfest Faves (all of which I've recommended here before)

Borderland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452592/) (2007) - Slasher/thriller
Crazy Eights (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470993/) (2006) - Session 9 meets The Grudge
Mulberry Street (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473514/) (2006) - Pretty damn good low budget infection flick.

Glad you like it! It definitely sets a different tone than Walking Dead. With WD you feel as though you're watching a TV show (not that that's a bad thing) - you have a lot of character development and back story. With Dead Set, it's more of just a long movie (if that makes sense) - Not as much character development, faster paced, but still definitely enjoyable. I actually think the mini series is a really good vehicle because it allows you to do a longer movie in a way.

It is an interesting contrast - both shows are trying to do something different in terms of bringing zombies to television.

That's interesting because I would draw the parallels in exactly the opposite way. Dead Set seems more "TVish" to me because it's more over the top, the characterizations are broader, the script is cheesier... while Walking Dead seems more cinematic to me because of the higher production values, the better writing, more subtle acting, etc.
