Define 'Chick Flick' ?

A buddy of mine recently refered to The Breakup as a 'chick flick'
I was taken aback .. to me it was a well done comedy with some insightful things to say about relationships. I couldnt see where a guy would enjoy this movie any less than a gal.

Then i started to think - what would i consider a chick flick ...

I know 'romantic comedies' get called chick flicks ... but i dont get that either .. i find they're comedies - either well done or poorly done.

So does the measure of how well it's done elevate it from the status of 'chick flick' ? isn't that negatively sexist ?

After contemplating this - in the shower this morning ...where i do all my best thinking - i came to the conclusion that the only thing i would consider a chick-flick - is a poorly made drama .. where boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy loses arm in a tractor accident, girl cares for boy, and little Joey gets stuck in a well after a battle with an incurable liver disease.

that being said - i would only consider this a chick-flick to s specific few chicks .. sad, lonely, none-too-bright.

Certainly none of the 'chicks' i know - but they must be out there.

I don´t think any film an be entirely a chick flick but i suppose it´s one that the film maker has chosen females as the target audience. But every film appeals to some people not in their target audience.

Seriously though, the ones with the mushy-wushy, teary-eyed stuff, long-drawn out sequences of forlorn lovers...the ones with endings so sweet they make your back teeth ache with a heavy throb...

"Reality bites" - not a motto for these ones.

And of course, the "Mean Girls" and "Parent Trap" kinda flicks.

I would make a really strong suggestion that Disney's "ENCHANTED" is a chick flick. Because it's really girl-oriented and romance-oriented, it has hunka guys in it, and songs are sung. Oh, and it has animated characters and Susan Sarandon. In other words, it's a chick flick. :rolleyes: ;)

I would say that a chick flick could be defined as any film that is made as a vehicle intended only to employ a "feel-good" message aimed at women- you know, girl power.

Legally Blonde, Just Like Heaven, 27 Dresses, etc.

These films were made with women in mind- that's it. There was no other target audience.

see - i completely disagree with that assessment of that particular movie ..
i found the entheusiastic performance of the lead to be contagiously engaging..

didnt want to bother starting a thread for this - so i'll derail my own ..

just got back from the specialist appointment.

apparently the arthritis in my knee is far worse than the tear - so they're trying a series of injections into the knee instead of surgery ...
the injections will replace the natural lubricant my knee isnt producing at this time.

possibly good news (got the 1st shot immediately - need 2 more - once each week for the next couple of weeks..

if this works i'll be one happy mo-fo

See, I liked Chocolat, and was indifferent towards Ghost. Not a fan of Dirty Dancing (either is the wife) or Titanic (which the wife loves) and I don't think I've sat through the others. Little Women was a good book though.

I hate Jane Austin movies, I was just using them as an example. Loved Chocolat and Little Women. Titanic was a bore. I think I just like movies Like Dirty Dancing and Ghost for the nostalgic, staying up and watching movies with my parents value. Give me romance along the lines of Shaun of the Dead over strictly romance anyday.

The Breakup was a lot of fun, I think Dan in Real Life was another romantic comedy I enjoyed recently. What about classic romantic comedies like Say Anything? Oh, and The Price of Milk was a little surreal but it was pretty fun too. :)

I honestly find myself doing the same thing. Honestly, if it's mushy and sucks, I pretty much consider it a chick flick. If it's well-written, acted, clever, etc., then I'll throw it in an appropriate genre.

But I agree - I honestly find the phrase "chick flick" to be incredibly offensive and condescending to women film-goers in general. Not going to lie, though - I've caught myself perpetuating this linguistic offense on a number of occasions.

I now broadly refer to these films generally as derivative, insipid, manipulative, pandering and whatever other patronizing vernacular comes to mind.
