Robert De Niro will reportedly co-star opposite Mel Gibson in the Martin Campbell-directed thriller Edge of Darkness, which is a remake of the 1985 BBC miniseries also helmed by Campbell.
According to The Boston Herald, De Niro "is this-close to signing on" for the film, which will shoot in Massachusetts from August through December.
The paper did not specify what role De Niro would play, but given De Niro's interest in the CIA (he directed and co-starred in The Good Shepherd) it seems plausible that he might play the CIA agent role portrayed in the original by Joe Don Baker.
The script, penned by Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed), follows a Boston cop (Gibson) investigating the murder of his activist daughter (to be played by Serbian-born Aussie actress Bojana Novakovic).
