Let's see if this works. This is the newest addition to our family. She arrived yesterday. Her name is Cherokee and she used to belong to my sister's oldest son. He lost his house and couldn't take her with him so we took her in. This pic was taken with my phone. As soon as she gets settled in, I'll take pics with my camera - I just don't want to startle her too much right now with the flash of the camera.

Thanks, neverending. When we asked him what he was going to do with her, he said he was going to take her to the SPCA. We said "Hell no, you're not! You'll bring her to us!" She's a very sweet girl - actually jumped up in my lap last night while I was watching TV. We're keeping her in my room for now, to introduce her to Lucy and Logan slowly.

She is a 7-month-old Sphynx kitten. And she IS a little sleepy; she had just gotten up from her midday nap and while she stretched and began to wake up, I completely ambushed her with the costume - she wasn't too happy about it. :D

Indiana in the crate on the left. He herniated a disc in his back last Christmas, and was without his back legs for 2 months. After being told he needed surgery or to be put down, we put him on a regimen of crate rest and meds, and he started walking again. Any folks with a doxie or dog with a back issue can check into alternatives. The Vet seemed to find being asked if she would consider being put down if she couldn't walk less than amusing. :D

The truth about Doxies is that they are one of the smartest breeds, they are just VERY stubborn and difficult to train. Lizzie came from a puppy mill, and had NO socialization with dogs or humans. After 10 litters in 5 years, she came to us, and now we're almost 3 years into having her, and she will sit on the couch with us, just not on us. The other 2 are VERY snuggly. Indy and Maggie will lay all over daddy when I am in my chair, and they sleep with us. Indy came trained from a mill in Indiana, and Maggie was a pup from a breeder in Tillamook, on the Oregon coast. They understand simple commands, and will even sometimes listen :D .
This breed is so loyal and once you are the forever mom, you belong to them .

LOL....I just said the same thing about Flinx's dachshund, I missed the pictures of Cherokee, she's so cute Hammerfan, I miss having cats so much. One day I will, I'm sure there's a pill or something I can give my husband. ;) But I admit ever since ChronoGrl started posting pictures of her Sphynx I have wanted one, just not sure how RASCAL would react. He barely tolerates Cheyenne taking up any of my attention.
Anyway, good luck with your cats, hope they learn to like each other, or at least tolerate each other soon....:)

I had been keeping Cherokee in my bedroom, and was going to do that for 2 weeks. I guess the sight of her sitting at the door, waiting for it to be opened made me back off a little. I think we're going to have to go back to that for a while.
Tell your husband that I'm allergic to cats, too. Except mine probably aren't as bad as his. Does he get the watery eyes and all that? I just get congested. A little shot of Flonase or Nasonex takes care of it for me.

Oh. My. GOD.
If this continues, we're going to have to just go out and get one.
Then again, we've resolved to get a bigger place before investing in a dog (our apartment is pretty tiny; I want a house with a yard before adding a dog to the family).

I keep hearing about "allergy pills" and "allergy shots" every time I bring up the fact that my boyfriend is allergic. The only reason he refuses to get treated is that he deals with other health issues and just doesn't want to compile on them (can't blame him!)... But your boyfriend should look into it, though. You want a cat SO much!!
Then again, your dogs are ADORABLE (I think that Rascal is my favorite - I love his colors).
I have to say, though, that the Sphynx doesn't really bother his allergies. We wash her once a week so that takes care of the dander for the most part, though every time she bites, scratches, licks, or sucks on him, his skin gets red and puffy.
They're a great breed, Jenna, and I honestly recommend getting one if there is a breeder around your neck of the woods.
Oh! And I apologize for those who have already seen this, but JENNA... DID YOU SEE HER HALLOWEEN OUTFIT?!?!?!?!?!

I love it! I'm just crazy about your cat. :p She's just awesome.
The only concern I have is how Rascal will react, I am not sure he has even been around cats. Cheyenne has I know, and she doesn't seem to mind them, I think she prefers them to other dogs honestly, but I am just not sure about him. I'm afraid he will end up bleeding, maybe missing an eye.....so I have to get some advice and figure out exactly how to do this before I bring a cat into the house. I want everyone to be happy and to get along. ;)

Yeah, he's got the husky eyes going on. And I should point out that he has 1 lab ear (floppy) and 1 shepard ear (up). He's definitely has a unique look goin. (The Robin picture was from when he was stilla puppy so both ears were still floppy. Once he got to be about a year old, the 1 stood up straight and the other stayed floppy. Although if he's on alert, they'll both go up.)
He hates when we dress him up in costumes. (But clearly he was more enthusiastic for the Robin one than he was the Spiderman one.)

I LOVE Boxers. I'm actually trying to sell the boyfriend on the idea of getting a German Shepherd - Our next door neighbor has a GORGEOUS one who he spent a lot of time training, so he's incredibly well behaved, too.
Unfortunately he says that German Shepherds are "too big." :( When it comes time for us to get a dog (and it WILL happen eventually - most likely when we get a house and a yard), we'll probably go to local rescue and see what they have. I especially love the tan and black colors of the rottweiler.
...
I just converted a couple pictures of Ripley to black and white to hang around the office:

So I got this today..early b'day present from the girl.
See, these things while common in some places in our country are relatively rare in my area...I've had one before, which kinda met an early end...so yeah we saw this thing, and almost didn't pick it up, she convinced me to in the end, and it's a really cool little thing...apologies for the poor pic quality, between this thing never staying still and a phonecam only available at the time, couldn't get that clear a shot, but they give an idea:

Ready to read some?
You've got stick insects over there right (?do you?)?
It's kind of like one of those, just not exactly the same family.
It's called a spiny leaf insect, or Macleays spectre. Dunno the scientific name though...you might know these as the bugs you saw in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/thorhakonsen/2476551526/
That's not a bad shot of one...they kind of have a big ant like head, a strange body and a scorpion lookin' tail.
Really cool pic here: http://members.optushome.com.au/davidavid/sticks/whole.jpg
I've got a female, which is the one in the pic I just linked - the males are a bit longer, stick-ish looking, and have limited flight.
Tried to find a pic online...couldn't, sorry
Either way, less remarkable creature, just looks like most other "stick" insects.
The females can get pretty big, say the length of your forearm, they look a little daunting but the creature is actually harmless - no sting or venom.
Only the females have the tail structure, it's actually a mechanism to throw eggs around - See, they actually asexually reproduce (females on their own produce female spawn) and throw an egg every day or so - the egg looks like a certain type of ant egg, and get this, it lands on the ground, the ants think it's food or one of theirs, takes it down into their hive where gestation conditions are actually ideal, and the nimph hatches down there.
It gets out, because when it's tiny it actually looks very similar to one of the ants....so yeah, they walk out and make for the trees.
The ones here eat almost nothing but Eucalyptus leaves (that's the stuff Koalas eat) which contain some kind've stuff that makes 'em almost stoned-like placid, they're quite happy to just hang about and climb on you.
They also have very cool feet - on each side is a claw, and they've got like built-in sticky pads that can adhere to almost any surface.
Anyways, yeah that's what it is.
Thanks for reading, ha.

How do you pet that thing though? Does it respond to the human touch?
Cheebs - That little girl is actually really really cool. I'm curious with V's question too - Does it respond to touch?
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f43/BJA1981/Bug2.jpg
(just linking 'case anyone missed it)
I don't know really...this one has clearly been handled sufficiently by the breeder, because it's completely human friendly.
I mean, if you go near it I assume it likes body heat or something because it'll crawl on to you...my other older/larger one I had last time did much the same, just sat more still, this things kind've hyper.
I know they can FEEL human touch, as she'll turn around and look if you touch her back, and as I said before they seem to sense body heat and also SEE very well - if I put one hand remotely near the other she will start reaching out with her front hands to try and grab/climb on.
She drinks water off my hand too.
Never really liked standard stick insects that much, but these look cool, and they're very docile...when she walks around on her 6 legs she looks like some kind've battlebug-robot thing.
Here's this cat thing I thought was funny.

My cat of 15 years, Buster, was diagnosed with terminal cancer yesterday, i've had him since the age of 4. He was the greatest companion I have ever had, and I dont know what I'm going to do without him, the 12th will be the last day I will ever see him, as I have to go to NZ then. The past 2 days have been the hardest 2 days of my entire life, I love this cat more than any living thing that has ever walked the earth, and I will miss him terribly.
I wont be posting on here anymore for a while, i need to get my self together and cherish my last days with him.

I am so sorry to hear this. You have my sincere sympathy. I remember when we had to have the dog I grew up with put to sleep. She was the first loved one I'd ever lost. But one thing that helped is knowing how much she knew she was loved during her life. Keep remembering that he knows how much he is loved and keep telling him that when you can.
Take care man. It's hard, but you'll get through it. It's going to be hard with every pet you have and love in the future too. But knowing you gave them a loving, safe home helps. They add so much to our lives. We love them and they love us, unconditionally. It's wonderful for both you and your little furry friend. He knows you love him.

Got some bad news about my cat Phantom...the young one...his "problem" recurred, a urinary tract thing. We think we got him to the vets on time, and he's currently there now, but if he needs surgery again I'm not sure I can make it happen...I mean I'm sure I *can* somehow but it'll be hard yards for a month or so.
Here's hoping this morning they say it was all good just on meds, but it's hard to be optimistic right now.

On another pet related note, I did my first bit of volunteer work at the vets today. Some blood was drawn, learned a little bit about the equipment and machinery and some info on ?pancreatitis? felt a bit of a fifth wheel there not really doing much, but hey. Went ok.

Ripley's not happy at all. :( We're gradually introducing them, but can't leave them alone together. Ripley stalks Leeloo and swats/jumps/tackles/bites her every chance she gets. Leeloo however is just the oblivious kitten who's tottering around, minding her own dopey kitten business and dealing with Ripley more as an annoyance than anything else.
Guess the transition period will take longer than anticipated (then again, I've read that it can take up to a few weeks; I just need to be patient :o ). I know this is going to sound cheesy, but it's difficult keeping either one in a separate room while playing with the other one. :(

So far he's stayed in his own area. I'm observant though, if he gets feisty I kept his brandy glass bowl.

Aw! Leeloo looks so cute (in a furless sort of way :p ). I'm glad they are getting along. My male cat will still bully his sister (he's almost twice her size), but then they'll curl up with each other and sleep. I think Ripley will learn to appreciate having another cat around to play with. My cats are always racing through the house on some kitty mission. :)

Can't DL her pic, I think I sent one from my phone to Gore...
When my daughter turned 9 at the beginning of the month, she had some dogs and puppies from foster homes and 2 from the shelter. She had the kids bring things for the dogs in lieu of gifts for herself.
The first time I saw ,what we now call Baylee, I fell in love.
She was so beautiful and fierce looking.
She is a mutt:) She is about 2 years old.
She is pit, boxer and lab.
I told the shelter lady I needed that dog, she said 'good!' , because she was scheduled to 'be put down' on Monday.
(the party was on Sat.)
She has been an experience already.
She got out and lost one day, she fell in the pool, she almost got into a fight with a HUGE dog....oh good lord what have I gotten myself into.
She is turning into a marley dog but I love her anyway.
Wolfgang ( our 13 yr.old cat) hates her of course, but I hope with time he will begin to tolerate her existence.:D

When they were kittens, the only thing that I could use to explain to people in terms of how they "felt" was to equate them to a shorn scrotum. Seriously.

I want one of those so bad!
They're great pets - affectionate (VERY affectionate), smart, sweet-tempered. They're more work than your average cat; you need to make sure to keep them warm (though that shouldn't be a problem for you as you're in CA), you need to bathe them once a week (they get dirty crawling on the floor all the time and have NASTY earwax that needs cleaning) and their eyes need to be cleaned once a day (they have no eyelashes, so debris can build up and cause eye infections). They're sensitive to eye and ear infections (Ripley has already had an eye infection, but we took care of that quickly), but as long as you take care of them, they're fine.
I highly recommend them as pets. I adore mine. :) If you have any questions about the breed, feel free to PM me.

We had a red beta fish named Jet Li and I personally thought that to be a mighty heavy name for a fish but what the fuck do I know....would it be wrong or bad luck to name a new animal (possibly another kitten soon to join my zoo) the same name? (the beta died months ago)
Also:
is it bad form to name an animal someone's full name?
We will be getting another dog soon and I want to name him Bruce Campbell
