LONDON — Batman star Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday on allegations of assault, police said.
British media had reported that Bale's mother and sister complained they were assaulted by the 34-year-old actor at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of "The Dark Knight."
The women made the allegation at a local police station in Southern England on Monday, Britain's Press Association news agency said. It said the allegation was then passed on to the Metropolitan Police in London.
Asked whether Bale had been questioned, a police spokeswoman did not refer to him by name but said: "A 34-year-old man attended a Central London police station this morning by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault."
The spokeswoman spoke anonymously in line with police policy and refused to go into more detail. British police do not name suspects before they are formally charged.
U.S.-based representatives for Bale didn't immediately return messages seeking comment. Phone calls to Bale's London representative went unanswered.
The Sun newspaper said police didn't question the actor Monday because they didn't want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.
Wales-born Bale first made a splash as the child star of Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun" in 1987. His screen credits also include "American Psycho," "The Machinist" and "Batman Begins."
In "The Dark Knight," Bale reprises the role of wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego Batman, a brooding vigilante superhero still scarred by the murder of his parents.
The film, which stars the late Heath Ledger as Batman's nemesis The Joker, took in a record $158.3 million at the box office in its opening weekend in the U.S. last week.
When contacted, Warner reps in London said they were making no comment at this stage.

Well, next I'm betting that Aaron Eckhart is going to be caught with a prostitute, Gary Oldman's secret life as a crack dealer is going to come to light, and Chris Nolan will be hit by a bus.
This movie is dangerous to be involved in...

It might not be, but this seems like a stunt pulled to get people taling about TDK even more. All the internet hype, Heath Ledger dead and now the star of it has been arrested, which will have people conversing about it which will inevitably have them talking about the movie. Same as the Lindsey Lohan thing not that long ago.

That's unfortunate. The details are vague so I'd like to think maybe it's being blown out of proportion...at least I hope because I always really liked him :(

I don't agree

A guy was talking about this on one of the Dark Knight groups on Facebook...I dont know too much myself, but supposedly England has a different definition of assault. Here's how he put it:
In England, assault can mean simply scaring the hell out of someone and making them fear an unlawful act. That could be as simple as raising a fist or yelling a lot so even if he didn't touch them and just walked off, it can still be considered assault. And in England, it's policy to arrest a suspect before questioning them. Let's just wait and see what Bale has to say before jumping to conclusions.
Vaguely reassuring...

Yeh, it is slightly different.
@Newb - But in Lindsey Lohan's case, neither is jail. But she still did it.
And it's convenient it happens just when the film's about to be released.

Bale Denies Assault Allegations
22 July 2008 12:17 PM, PDT | From wenn.com |
Latest: Batman star Christian Bale has denied assaulting his mother and sister after he was released from police custody on Tuesday.
Bale, 34, is alleged to have attacked his mother Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, at London's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday night.
In a statement issued shortly after Bale's release, a spokesperson for the star says: "Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister.
"Mr. Bale, who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police. At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."
The actor's arrest came just hours after he attended the European premiere of his new Batman movie The Dark Knight in London's Leicester Square on Monday, alongside stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Sir Michael Caine.
According to reports, authorities did not attempt to arrest the star until after the high-profile event because they were certain Bale would not flee the country to resist arrest, adding that the lack of severity in the case did not warrant an immediate response.
The actor has reportedly been ordered by police to make a court appearance in September.

No charges are being filed... it was nothing
and it was"verbal assault" he was accused of... big fucking deal. Everyone can relax.
It's a bit disheartening to see how quick some are to throw a man under the bus before due process is served.

Well, whether or not they did it for that reason, my point was proven. It got us all talking about it which leads onto talk of the dark knight. And as it wasn't big enough for him to be charged, it isn't likely to have any long term effects.

so true.
I wonder if the mother and sister were looking for a pay out to keep thier
mouths shut.Sounds real weird, especially for a mum who should be so proud of her son , to do something as radical as this.

I heard his mom just walked right up to a cop, point at her face, and said; "You wanna know how I got these scars?". What followed was the tragic tale of Bale's abuse which is currently under investigation.

I just hope the man is proven innocent and returns home. Its a nightmare to even think of a guy like him being levelled on these sort of charges.
Seems like the mom and sis were trying to grab their share of the spotlight. Damn pathetic women.

LONDON - "Batman" star Christian Bale has denied allegations of assault made by his mother and sister, hours after he was arrested, questioned by London police and released.
The actor spent four hours at a police station Tuesday, but was not charged. British media had reported that Bale's mother, Jenny, and sister Sharon complained he had assaulted them at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of "The Dark Knight."
Representatives for Bale released a statement denying that an assault took place.
A woman thought to be Sharon Bale told reporters "it's a family matter" from her home in Corfe Mullen, 110 miles southwest of London. Jenny Bale, who lives in nearby Bournemouth, refused to comment.
The Sun newspaper said police didn't question the actor Monday because they didn't want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.
Warner reps in London would not comment on the matter.

edited because my post sounded condescending...
who knows what happened, either way in the end they decided it was a family matter and not a court case. which means the love is still there, isn't that nice? awwwww
I can guess what happened:
Alcohol+high emotion+high stress = ruiauraurhrhahhhgg
I think it's lame that you guys automatically make assumptions about his mother and sister... I know he's batman, but that doesn't make him perfect. :)

Ok my initial reaction was shock. We all see Christian Bale in a variety of ways. However we only know what we see or hear. We see the image and characters that we see in his films. We are sold on impressions or the first impression that we get of actors, sportsmen etc. Actors have been manufactured to be appealing to their audience i.e us. Does anybody here personally know Christian? I know i don't. Most likely it was the media blowing something out of proportion to sell a story. Who knows of someone who has or does abuse their family, verbally, physically? Most other people wouldn't get involved and it stays within the family. When it's someone that "the public" has cast as a star, popular etc then it is like national shame and we are quick to judge and disown our association with the actor etc. We think that these idols are saints or gods, but the reality right or wrong they are glorified people. By the way Christian Bale is one of my favourite actors.

i couldnt care less about this crap.
I dont read tabloids, i dont watch entertainment tonight - i pay no attention to what happens off screen mostly because i'm not interested - but also because by the time anyone outside of the 3 people involved hear about this garbage the truth is long gone - never to be heard from again.
i'm interested in the product : the film.
anything outside of this - i could honestly give 2 shits. I'm far more involved in my own families life to be concerned with someone on the other side of the planet.

My first reaction was so what if he did? My sister (who is also a jenny, shitty name there...) and mother could definitely inspire a physical assault. if he ripped them a new one verbally, then so what?
What i think is interesting is what is happening around the actors of this movie. Heath Ledger died, and everyone was screaming either suicide or drug overdose because he was a moron. oops, wrong. he did nothing wrong, he just died.
Christian bale gets accused of beating up his sister and mom, but it tuurns out he didnt. i am just waiting for the next actor get accused of something they didnt do.

My post was based on several old interviews I remember back when Bale wasn't the 'big shit' and he was always open about his 'troubled' family ties.
