Groovy man. I'm reading a new horror novel by one of our fine members here. Really enjoying it.
It happens to begin with a quote from a David Bowie song. Imagine that.
That's cool. Shit, I didn't even know these forums existed, otherwise I would've joined long ago. :p

There are a lot of great horror fans here. Check out the various forums and join in the conversations.
I'm more of a vintage horror fan myself, but there are all types around here.
Right on, that works.
Curious, there aren't any stupid rules like "You can't resurrect a topic more than 30 days old" or anything like that, is there?
I joined another board the other day, and I left it about 20 minutes after they had that rule, and buncha other nonsensical ones there.

Just don't be stupid or try to bullshit people. That's what pisses people off the most.
And don't promote anything till you've been here a while.
Aside from that things are pretty laid back.
Sounds good, thanks for the heads up bro.

Hi there Russ, how's it goin? I like just about all kinds.... Not overly into the Japanese Horror Flicks though.... Really only enjoyed the first Grudge, never seen Ringu or the Japanese Grudge.
Other than that, I love just about all the rest of it. How about you? :)

I'm the same. I like them all, but I like the one that are more pschologically terrifing than someone just jumping out of a hole to scare someone. Funny thing you mention Japaneese horror, I bought Audition the other day and I plan on watching it this weekend. Have you seen that one?
I've not seen Audition, but I've heard things about it. You'll haveta let me know what ya think.
Psychological horror is awesome. The Shining, The Blair Witch Project, Haute Tension.... All brilliant. :)

a combination of the 2 is even moe effective.
Thanks Freak... Russ, I LOVED Funny Games, absolutely fantastic flick.
I heard the original is the exact same, only of course it has sub-titles cuz it's in German or some other language I can't remember right now. I heard the (same) director filmed the remake shot for shot, just used better actors in Roth, Pitt and Watts.

I guess there is no reason for me to watch the original then. I did like the dialogue between the two killers, but I thought Timothy Roth and Naomi Watts were not directed to their potential. They are both great actors and I thought their performances were a little flat.
Russ, gotta disagree with ya there. I thought they did excellent jobs. Ah well, each to their own :p

You're exactly right, Noah. Somepeople don't get that and try to argue. Oh well. So what is your top horror films?
Mine are Halloween, Army of Darkness although I see it more as a comedy, and The Descent it's my favorite from the past couple of years.
Cool, I walked outta the Descent. I'm not sure what it was about it, just the pacing was too slow or something.... I didn't give 2 shits about any of the characters, but the gore (what little I did see) wasn't enough to keep me interested either. One of those films you either love or hate, I think.
My favourites would be the Evil Dead Series, High Tension, Child's Play Series, Halloween Series (all except 3), Hellraiser Series, NOES Series, 28 Days/Weeks Later, Romero's Zombie Films and other movies like Exorcist, The Shining, etc.
And then I like the Psychological flicks like The Machinist, One Hour Photo, Hard Candy, and Sci-Fi flicks like Alien/Predator/AVP Series', and the movie Sunshine was fuckin' brilliant!

I thought The Machinist was great. Alot of people I know haven't seen it much less heard of it, which is a shame. Christian Bale was great in it and also American Psycho, but that is understood, right? I haven't seen Sunshine, I thought it looked a little corney. Tell me what you liked about it so I can reconsider whether to watch it.
Yes, The Machinist was awesome. Bale's one of my favourite actors out there, he's fuckin' fantastic. :)
American Psycho's a given too.... Good times!
As for Sunshine, it has Cillian Murphy (He was the main character in 28 Days Later, he also was in Red Eye and the Scarecrow in Batman Begins) who's also one of my favourites. It's directed by one of my favourite director's in Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) and it's about a crew on a spaceship in the future, with a bomb on-board with a mission to fly the bomb into the sun and reignite it, before it dies completely and everyone on Earth perishes.
But there's a problem, because they run into the original ship that was sent to the same mission, and they have to decide between exploring it (to see what happened to the crew, and why the mission failed) or continuing on with their mission to reignite the sun (but time is against them) with the possibility of not making it back home themselves.
That's just an overview... The acting is great, the story, and atmosphere is fucking AWESOME (very Alien/Cameron like in some scenes). The special effects are fucking sweet, plus there's an underlying, almost spiritual theme to it (which I might be reading more into it) but each person takes different things from different movies. Quite possibly my favourite Science Fiction Flick EVER, and that INCLUDES the Alien Series, Predator, Terminator, etc.
Definitely check it out at least once. :)

Thanks for the synopsis, I'll add it to my list of movies to watch.
Nice, I think you'll enjoy it. Well I hope you enjoy it at least half as much as I did. I'm notta huge fan of Sci-Fi movies either really. I like them, but this one was great.

I used to. I might have to renew my subscription so that I can watch all the movies recommended on this site.
Do you like classic horror films (pre-1960) and which ones are your favorites?
I haven't seen that many and I think I'm going to try and catch up on the big classic horrors.

Naturally I thought, "Stoopid n00b. Posting retarded non-sequitors."

Hi. I'm Chrono.
Hi Chrono, heh no problem. Nice to meetcha :)
Russ, I've never seen a pre-1960 Horror movie before, honestly. Does that now make me not a fan? :p
The oldest horror flick I've seen, and loved, was the original Romero Classic Night of the Living Dead '68. Fucking brilliant movie.
I'll need to check out some classics sometime, but I'm such a fan of movies in general (Horror being my favourite genre of course) there's so many movies out there I still need to see.
I usually buy my movies, I never rent. Of course I make sure I know what the movie's all about too, before I spend the money on it. If I don't like it, I give it to my Brother, or I sell it off. But that rarely happens. :p
Thanks for the link Neverending!

It DOES mean you haven't seen some of the greatest films ever made.
I'll stop there because when I start lecturing about the importance of knowledge of film history, people get mad at me.
Nah, not mad at all. I guess older films just never interested me for some reason. But of course I can admit I have no basis of which to go off of, really. I'm definitely willing to give them a try. So Neverending, if you could recommend just a single pre-1960 horror flick, what would it be?

Easy- but it's 2, because you can't see the one without the other- Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein.
Ok, I will haveta check them out. Those'll be the first pre-60 Horror flicks I see. Thanks man :)
EDIT: I think I may go to Best Buy and get one of those pretty affordable Classic Horror Boxed Sets of DVD's.... That have like 15 or 20 movies on a coupla discs.

Sounds good Russ!
An update on the Best Buy Horror Classic Collection idea... I went there tonight, and none of the boxed sets had Frankenstein or Bride of Frankenstein, or even Freaks.
So I will have to get those elsewhere. I've got a couple of ideas though. Thanks for the recommendations everyone!

Grab the Universal Monster Legacy collections - they're two-disc sets that Universal put out for all of their flagship monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon.
The sets are all pretty cheap (like $30 or so these days), and contain between 3-5 classic horror flicks. They're all worth every penny, and work as a great intro to classic horror.
My personal favourite is the 1931 version of Dracula with Bela Lugosi, with The Wolf Man (1941) with Lon Chaney Jr. would have to be the runner up. But Frankenstein + Bride of Frankenstein are equally essential - they're probably the most iconic of the bunch.
For a noobie to classic horror, I'd also have to suggest checking out some Vincent Price stuff - my all time favourite actor, horror or otherwise. His Poe films are a wonderful staring point - Masque of the Red Death and Pit and the Pendulum being the best, IMO - and the original House on Haunted Hill is one of the most fun movies ever made. The original House of Wax with Price is a good time as well. He did some fantastic work in the 70's as well, but his heyday was 50's-early 60's, for sure.
You've come to the right place to get started into vintage horror - a lot of us here are pretty passionate about it, especially Neverending up there :)
Hope we can help you out man!

Noah, just finished watching Audition. The movie was pretty bad ass. However, with all the hype around it, you expect (or at least I did) that there is crazy shit going on right from the beginning. If you watch it, be patient because this movie builds and builds until the very end. I think it is worth seeing, but it might be a victim of being over-hyped.
Oh, and The Return thanks for the classic movie box set recommendation. I'll have to check into it.
Thanks The Return on the recommendations as well. I'm going to start with Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, and see if I can get into them. If so, I will check out the others you've mentioned. :)
Russ, interesting about Audition. I've not seen it, not sure if I'll bother with it or not to be honest. Perhaps eventually, thanks for letting me know.

Agreed, Caligari is badass.
Nosferatu is a masterpiece too, as long as you can f=ind a decent version of it. The one with the Type O Negative soundtrack is pretty sick and wrong, but any of the ones with classical scores are great.
