MGM studio has announced plans to remake another '80s feature in the shape of Red Dawn.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Red Eye scribe Carl Ellsworth will pen the script, which will update the story up to modern day.

The original was set against the backdrop of an invasion of America by Russia and Cuba, and revolved around group of youngsters - including Charlie Sheen and Patrick Swayze - banding together to fight back.

"The tone is going to be very intense, very much keeping in mind the post-9/11 world that we're in," explains Ellsworth. "As Red Dawn scared the heck out of people in 1984, we feel that the world is kind of already filled with a lot of paranoia and unease, so why not scare the hell out of people again?"

Don Bradley, who worked as second unit director on Spider-Man 3, The Bourne Ultimatum and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, will make his directorial debut with the film.

Sounds great. The original was very good, there was a sense of hopelessness about it.... I think the remake could be as good as, if not better than the original. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

The original was one of my favorites when I was a kid. I see no reason to remake it with the "terrorism threat" theme. I'm sure it will suck, but we'll see.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan ("Watchmen") is in final negotiations to join the cast of "Red Dawn," the MGM/UA reboot of the 1984 film.

"Red Dawn" follows a group of teenagers who band together to fight back when their home town is invaded by an joint force of Chinese and Russian soldiers. Morgan will play the leader of the U.S. Special Forces team who discovers the teens' stronghold while behind enemy lines.

Morgan's currently on location in Puerto Rico as star of Joel Silver's "The Losers" for Warner Bros., and recently completed production opposite Hilary Swank in Hammer Films' thriller "The Resident."

Dan Bradley is directing "Red Dawn" from a screenplay by Carl Ellsworth & Jeremy Passmore. Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson from Contrafilm are producing with Vince Newman and Kevin Halloran exec producing.

The film is currently shooting in Michigan and will open on September 24, 2010.
